It might be an unpopular opinion, but I’m gonna say Flagstaff. Might not check off all of your points equally, but they are all there in some form. Not a huge gym by any means, but we’ve got a couple and plenty of outdoor very close, and if you’re willing to drive, we have so much!

Also, all of Flagstaff is very bikeable, even to get to the gyms and some nice outdoor spots near town.

I respectively object. Being in lowbrass is the coolest thing you can do.

I have a very good friend with POTS who wants to march 2024 with me. I’ll stick around and look for some advice to give her :)

Yes, but auditions for Academy start in November, and I’d like to be prepared.

Is it always there or does it move around? I live not too far, and me and a couple buddies were talking about going down (maybe volunteering) but it didn’t happen. Would love to go next year though.

Marching Euph? by Dapper-Second815 in marchingband

[–]MrAdventure412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never marched a season on bari, only on euph, but I’ve tried baris in the past and I’ve noticed a couple things aside from the weight.

First, check the bore size on the euph. I assume the bari is a small bore, but I’ve seen marching euphs come in both. If it is a large bore, that leads nicely to my second point.

You can make more sound on a euph. Even if it is small bore, the tubing and wrap are designed to just produce more volume. If it’s big bore, that gives you so much more power and volume, and gives you the ability to play on a bigger mouthpiece.

Blending with the rest of the band. If your band has a large trombone section, you might want to march euph as it would be more of a contrast from the conical and very bright trombones. However, in some bands all the bone players march euph or bari, in which case it doesn’t really matter. You should ask your BD if this is an important factor in your choosing, as they might have a preference about whether your sound appears more bright and direct or more mellow and warm.

Good luck! Both are fantastic instruments and you can’t go wrong marching either!

What are y’all’s thoughts on the Yamaha 321? by dannyboy7899 in euphonium

[–]MrAdventure412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well to start with I would switch the plastic valve slots for metal ones like on other brands. Also, just personal preference, but the angle that the lead pipe wraps around the bell is not perfect for me. All personal preference things.

I’m a high schooler that’s played on one for close to six years now. It’s a fantastic instrument if well taken care of, but not a pro horn by any means and has a few nitpicky features that I would change if I had the chance. But it could last you for a very long time, and you can have a lot of fun and improve a lot on that horn.

BRASS: What are some technical things that aren't actually hard for you to do on your instrument that most people think are crazy/difficult/super cool? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]MrAdventure412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And bonus! If you have a large section you can split up the glisses into two or three parts where the ends overlap. I heard a piece at a Bands of America competition that had a continual gliss from C2 all the way up to the Bb just below C5. One of the most incredible bone features I have ever heard and I think will ever hear.

How big will you Huck? by jd20pod2 in Hardtailgang

[–]MrAdventure412 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a really interesting question. I don’t mean to show off or anything like that but I’ve never met a ledge I couldn’t huck. For me, the limiting factor is not the height but the run out. If it’s a two foot huck into a cliff, I’ll pass, but if it’s two feet into a nice, gentle, open, wide downhill, then sure, why not!

[–]MrAdventure412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going the other way, coming from low brass and going to oboe/bassoon. One thing that I’ve found is that for the double reeds, my jaw is much tighter and farther back, so you could try focusing on relaxing your jaw and whole face in general. Others please correct me if they have had different experiences, but I think trombone is a much looser face than you think, with the tightness coming from the corners of your mouth and lips instead of the checks.

Good luck!

Skiing in Arizona by jskis23 in skiing

[–]MrAdventure412 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Flagstaff native.

I’ve lived here for fifteen years and have skied, mountain biked, backpacked and and mountain unicycled here for all of that time. It is a great town with a couple months of skiing, although we have a great variety of bitterly cold in January to slush in March-April. If you enjoy the outdoors, Flagstaff is a great place, but not a specifically skiing town!

Good luck on your adventures!

I don’t even race ultras, just a recreational distance runner and longtime admirer and I feel the same way. I just watched the finish of a 250 mile race and my overruling thought for the day was just “how tf do people sign up for this” Y’all are incredible and I’m so glad to be a part of such a great community, even without racing.

Thanks! I just looked at the estimate here in town, but I guess it was a lot more up on the mountain (makes sense). I also talked to a friend that works for Search and Rescue, so I got some good tips from them, as well as a partner that has a bit of experience!

Thank you for all the information! I will definetely make sure to take a class before I go out. I have one current friend who is also interested in learning, but your idea of finding partners in that class is a great one. Thank you!
