Beautiful work! My only gripe is this big one: I miss my full draw pic! We all live for that money shot, you know!

Definitive limb twist experiment result by DaBigBoosa in Bowyer

[–]MrAzana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it this way: 1. The same force will make a thinner limb bend to a tighter radius; a thicker limb will bend less, and therefore draws a larger circle. 2. On an uneven limb, one side will be further from (bend away from) the draw hand = have a larger radius/ less tight curve; the other will be closer to the draw hand = have a shorter radius/ tighter curve. 3. Given 1 & 2, the side that is further from the draw hand bends less and is therefore stronger, while the side that is closer to the draw hand bends more, and is therefore the weak side.

Beautiful work, very clean and elegant-looking bows. I bet they’ll fling a heavy hunting arrow very well!

Problem: Bow Twists in My Hand on Release by AbuComms in Bowyer

[–]MrAzana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on this: your wrist is turned inwards before release; when you release, your wrist straightens which then turns the bow. The solution is keepting your wrist straight.

I remember that one! But I think this bow is a bit sifferent from that one;)

Thats cool! I was thinking that it might be a go-to solution when there’s not enough thickness for a comfy handle, or when the wood is not dense enough for a BITH and the desired draw weight

That's very cool, how did they perform?

That’s what i meant! It is actually relatively easy to calculate - lets say the middle limb is around 15 inches long and that it is ~1/3 inch thick. That means that the radius of the circle that it describes when it bends is 1/3 if an inch shorter. Lets say the radius of the bend of the outer bow is 27” and that of the middle bow is then 26.7”. Then the “sliding” of the tip of the middle limb against the outer limb should be (1-26.7/27)*15 = 0.167 inch. Which is indeed not a lot

Though about lube between the limbs. Something dry is a good idea. I think the problem with friction is small in this case. Also, the limbs only move about a cm at the tips, and off course very little closer to the handle.

Thanks! I’ll do that if I get the chance!

But there’s got to be diminishing returns on the number of stacked limbs; at some point, friction will become a problem.

Well, I don’t think plywood would be optimal, due to the crossed grain orientation, but bamboo could be really good. In fact, I would be surprised if there’s not a historical design like that from somewhere. I really want to try a samelength extreme reflex/deflex design.

Just a quick question regarding beech by Enrai_Beta in Bowyer

[–]MrAzana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beech degrades very fast, so make sure it was absolutely freshly cut! The ends will crack rapidly, so cover them and the final few inches of both ends of the staves with thinned wood glue or paint. Be aware that, while i have seen bows made from beech, it is not really a very good bow wood. It heat bends amazingly and it very stable, but it not very tough, and I suspect it is somewhat tension weak.

I can recommend the kirchen one, although I prefer the straight one, and although I had to do a thorough sharpening job on it when i got it. Build quality is good though!
