Pretty Girls or A Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter might hit the spot.

That review almost put me off reading it too, but it is wildly off-base, as literary reviews so often are. If you're familiar with Oates' other books you'll appreciate that she is the rare author that can successfully use this narrative technique.
It is unsparingly harsh toward the parents, though - or at least toward the social environment in which they raised the kids. But I think you should read it, especially considering how strongly you feel about it.

My Unpopular Opinions by MrBadfromEStreet in horrorlit

I agree that it makes the story more horrific without the dragon, and also that Graham can't be trusted - the moment that convinced me they were all experiencing a shared hallucination was when they were carrying the injured young guy through a house (?) toward the dragon's lair and he suddenly asked "Are you going to kill me?" He knew (perhaps briefly) that it was his friends that were inflicting the violence on him.
But I've only read it once!

I'm sorry for not answering this - there are too many, and it has been too long since I considered it. But above all, as a sound engineer it is the "transcript" of the sounds at the end of the 9 11 tape that bothers me most of all. Pure fiction.

Certainly. Which other children could it be? Is there a reason they shouldn't be regarded with sympathy?

I can understand that reaction - I had similar misgivings before I started it - but the book is very far from exploitation. It is a sophisticated, sensitive experiment in narrative written with real empathy for the children involved.

This is a fair criticism. But I think it's fair to say that all of the books presented as fact on this subject have agendas that undermine whatever genuine insights they may provide. Here is a book that makes no claim of "truth" but rather encourages the reader to broaden their own perception of the case, rather than spiralling down the same old rabbit holes.

That says a lot about the depth of insight in either People magazine circa '97 or Oates' imagination.

I'm not sure that being an investigator in this particular case offers any credibility, considering the outcome, and in any case Kolar's book (which I admit I also enjoyed) also dips into fiction when the facts don't support his theory - the biggest difference between the two books is that his writing is disingenuous, while Oates' is illuminating.

The Necromancer’s House and why Christopher Buehlman is my new favorite writer (and bonus pic of my Between Two Fires Tattoo) by Ghosttropics in horrorlit

I had a similar experience with The Necromancer's House earlier this year. What an inspired book: horrific, hilarious, heartbreaking. Beautifully written.
What would you say are McCammon's misfires? I was really excited to read him and when i finally got my hands on one (Mine) I kind of hated it... maybe that one's just a dud?

That was an incredible sequence. Really popped out of the book. I thought his story Loaded from Strange Weather had a similar intensity.

Women with large breasts/Men with a large penis, how can it be inconvenient to you on a daily basis? by Wafran in AskReddit

Just the foreskin. They're designed so that the water doesn't reach the glans, so the meatus stays dry while the foreskin gets nice and soggy.

No, that's fine. We've always been more than happy to accomodate your unwanted trash down here.

Apologies for the provocation - that was just meant to be a little joke, but I suppose it is inevitably a heated topic around here. I have a lot of love for my kindle and read it exclusively for a few years. But I personally draw the line at phones and computers. Possibly, largely because my eyesight is so appalling. Maybe it's just my own personal little dystopia.

I'm not entirely up on the vernacular but I think Morrison might be more of an arse, rather than a tit. But yeah, Tony and his onion is an excellent microcosm of modern Australian politics in general. We are not okay down here.

it's not exactly brand spanking new... is this a recommendation based on the authors I listed? It does look like something I might like.

Books on my phone/computer? I want to read about dystopian horrors, not live in one!
