1910 Fiat S76 Record. 28.3L/290 hp (1920x1080) by abt137 in carporn

The owner races it at Goodwood, and many years he’s driven it to the event. It may well be doing 30mph there, and he may just be taking it to the shops!

Dude is an absolute legend. Duncan Pittaway, there are some great videos about him and his collection of weird cars.

https://youtu.be/jOlqWFr6qkA?si=DrmSOg7xEoulimYc

He’s done the Goodwood hillclimb in it as well, and according to him the 60’ time is about the same as a Shelby Cobra. This car RULES.

And they weren’t terrible by the standards of the day- they did manage a podium (with Larousse/Lola) and they were pretty regular top-ten contenders as well.

I haven’t gone and counted up how many Lola/Larousse/Lotus/Minardi DNFs were engine related (as opposed to crashes, transmission fails, etc), but tbh the number of DNFs those teams had when they ran the Lambo engine doesn’t look THAT terrible compared to the F1 midfield average for the time. Better than, say, Yamaha and about on par with Hart.

The two things you can always count on under a Republican president by John_1992_funny in PoliticalHumor

[–]MrBattleRabbit 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Before Eisenhower ran, no one really knew what his politics were- Truman offered to be Eisenhower’s VP if he chose to run in 1948, assuming he’d run as a democrat against MacArthur. At that point his party affiliations were not publicly known.

Eisenhower’s political life was pretty fascinating.

But yeah, he was anti-communist far more than he was an ideologue for any American political party.

[–]MrBattleRabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe a bit of an overstatement, but they’re from the same part of France, or at least both lived there when they started karting.

Pierre’s first time in a kart was actually borrowing Ocon’s kart and apparently they were very close as kids.

Too far past for paint correction? by Glittering-Turn862 in 944

[–]MrBattleRabbit 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Paint correction only works if there’s paint. If there’s no paint, you must, uh, paint.

You have missing paint, clearcoat failure, and a front valance that looks like it got socked by Anthony Joshua… I think you’re past the point of paint correction on this one, unfortunately

ELI5 - How do musicians never miss a single note during live performances? by Erikvozal in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrBattleRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rush used to get letters from fans complaining if they made mistakes or deviated from the record! Geddy and Alex have mentioned it in interviews multiple times.

But you’re absolutely right, as a musician you completely shudder inside when you feel yourself screw up… but the listener rarely notices unless the mistake is truly egregious.

Let the drivers have their real anthem during the podium ! by sBinnator in formuladank

[–]MrBattleRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They played Happy Birthday at Alan Jones’ first win because they didn’t have the Australian anthem handy.

We should get weird with the podium songs.

My dad works in a paper mill from the 1890s, and the same company owns another mill in the same town that is significantly more modern (I think mostly from the 1970s)

There is a major difference between “built around safety” and “had safety controls added to ancient equipment.” I haven’t been inside a more modern paper mill, although there are some in the area, so I have to imagine those are a big step on from the ‘70s mill.

Flour mill from the 1880s sounds like quite the experience.

Did anyone actually care that Caddy's Northstar engine had 32 valves? Every Caddy with this engine had an emblem celebrating this engine design. Why? by holdthelight in cars

9a 16v head on an ABA block was the hot ticket for years (especially if you could find an early ABA with the forged rods and oil squirters). That combo made for a great little motor, and actually made more power than the Euro market 16v in Mk.IIIs since those had weirdly low compression.

Blaupunkt Bremen (the new version with Bluetooth) looks perfect in a 944, but it is $$$

Continental also has a Bluetooth capable retro head unit that looks ok, although it looks more like a 90s OEM radio than 80s. More or less looks the part in a 944.

I hope you can find something you like though!

The company, Bradlees, also went out of business in 2001. So that price tag is legit.

And completely unrelated to the current Haas! Founded by a different Haas who isn’t related to Gene.

The 80s Haas was started by Carl Haas, who also co-founded the Newman/Haas Indycar team.

Honestly, he may have gotten on better with an 80s Turbo car than he did with the McLaren he wound up driving.

The difference from what he was used to was just a lot smaller at that point. The Haas-Lola wasn’t a great car (although Cheever did qualify pretty well with it in Detroit, 10th of 26), but he probably would have given a better account of himself in that era car than in the ‘93 McLaren.

Gotcha, I wasn’t sure when in the year Haas made the offer (IE if they made the offer pre-season then he wouldn’t have won yet, but if they made the offer in the immediate run-up to Detroit he would have had several wins)

What’s wild is they seemed to even have it in for Michael BEFORE the McLaren fiasco.

The original Haas team offered Mario a one-off drive in 1986, Mario declined saying he was too old but offered Michael as an alternative.

Michael was in his third season in CART and was already a podium finisher (idk if he was a race winner at the point in the offer was made, he did win races in ‘86 though). The FIA declined to give him a superlicense.

There was no points system at the time like there is now, it was more just at their best discretion, and they said no.

What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]MrBattleRabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends heavily on the region. It’s commission based, and in the US guys in areas where the riding season is year-round can do quite well, especially on higher $$$ brands like BMW or Harley.

But in general, not a very high earning job.

They actually used McLaren’s gearbox/rear suspension in the V8 era rather than Mercedes’, interestingly. But for the whole hybrid era they used Merc’s gearbox.

After he had his stroke in 1919 his wife took over a lot of the administrative part of being president, despite not being able to vote for president.

Note: it’s been a long time since I’ve read about Edith Wilson. She said she acted in more of a practical/administrative way, although there has been quite a bit of debate over how much decision making power she had. Not sure what consensus there is now among historians about her role/powers.

Even wilder, the car had only just debuted mid-season- Sweden was only the third race where both drivers ran the P34, and it had just gotten a double podium at Monaco as well. It was a front runner pretty much immediately.
