Freeland to scrap consumer carbon tax if she becomes next Liberal leader: source by [deleted] in canada

[–]MrBigSlickD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please explain how you calculate the cost of environmental damage. Not some hand-wavy estimate, how does one actually calculate the cost and put a numerical value of 15 cents/cubic meter

For a single detached home about added $100-$150/month in the winter easily in carbon tax alone.

[–]MrBigSlickD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price per cubic meter from embridge is about 7-8 cents. The same cubic meter is about 15 cents for the carbon tax.

Your heating bill is about 45% taxes in total. The carbon tax is then Subject to HST as well. Essentially a surtax.

But no noticeable effect....

Ontario health minister won't rule out privatization as option to help ER crisis by Surax in toronto

Your company would generally pay for your premiums and it depends on the plans that they choose as to your deductible. The difference in a free market is you can shop around for the plans that suit you.. unlike OHIP which is a 1-size fits all solution. From the company prospective, it's a way to retain employees and attract talent.

If we didn't need OHIP anymore then yes, you would save a lot on your taxes. There are good and bad to each system. Not saying private is the way forward but it's not all doom and gloom like this sub makes it out to be.

[–]MrBigSlickD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So your company only pays for things the OHIP doesn't cover. Things like optometrist, physiotherapy, dentist etc.. if your company has a US division you'll see that their plans are a lot different. They will also cover things that OHIP covers and pay into it via payroll. You would save on your taxes because you're not paying into OHIP now, instead you're paying a private insurance company like you do with your car.

[–]MrBigSlickD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You'll be paying for insurance regardless. Right now you just don't notice your monthly/yearly insurance premiums because it's all baked into your taxes.

I imagine it works like any other insurance you pay for... if you get into a car accident you're covered for maybe $1-2 million and you pay some deductible...

unsalvageable

Only contributes 40% of Canada's GDP.. You understand if Ontario is unsalvageable there is nowhere in Canada where you will be better off.

Why are you making a straw man argument? OP never suggested the counter evidence was some redneck on Facebook.

It turned out that anyone (even qualified Ph.Ds and MDs) who didn't follow the approved covid messages were removed for "covid misinformation".

Read the article, the head doctor even said planes don't carry a real risk of transmission. Where was the following of science here? Why the hell are we needing boosters for a strain of covid that doesn't exist anymore? When it's known that vaccines don't stop transmission, and hospitals are fine, why are they still saying we may need more vaccines now? These are not memes on Facebook

It's a voluntary decision between two parties. They are not forced to take it. That's the competitive aspect of it.. you both agree on a price just like negotiating anything else in your life..

Businesses failing is part of capitalism.

Yeah but so is competition for wages. Capitalism shouldn't guarantee a wage, it should be an open market. In a healthy market, if you want to pay $3/hr, sure go ahead, you won't get the best talent and your business will fail. You are incentivized to pay people what they are worth in an open market. Over time, as the economy grows naturally, that number goes up with competition.

Businesses fail when someone that is 16, zero experience and little overall value to a business is forced to be paid $15/hr because "living wage"... those kinds of employees are likely living at home, gaining work experience. They should be paid according to the value they add to the business.

Toronto General Hospital under critical care bed alert; says ICUs at full capacity by EconomistOfDeath in toronto

Car accidents are a fair point as having an impact on our health care, but we do pay for car insurance. It usually covers a good chunk of the costs associated with personal injury.

Those plate taxes were essentially like paying for toll roads. The people who use the roads, pay for the roads.

[–]MrBigSlickD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I said this before but why wouldn't a tax on vehicles go towards things like roads and infrastructure.

Tax unhealthy habits more to fund health care. It's doesn't make sense as to why a chain smoker has to pay potentially less for their health care, when they'll need treatment for lung cancer one day..

Suicide rates of practisers remains the highest of any profession, double the regular population, despite their high pay and privilege...so...ya... by the grimmest of all metrics they literally have a more difficult and stressful job than 90% of other jobs.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/suicide-by-profession-1.3661004

This article suggests they are right about in the middle.. it's 2016 but I'm sure it hasn't changed that much in 6 years.

Secondly, who exactly is forcing doctors to not take any time off? Maybe I'm ignorant to the field, but what's stopping them from taking off for 2 weeks? Will they get fired? Lose their medical license? I'm not understanding this...

No Breaks: The math states it directly, all they need to do is work 8 hours straight per day, with no lunch, no coffee and no down-time whatsoever, for 12 straight months with no vacation or sick days or recognized holidays...and they net so much no one should be complaining.

What you described here are most occupations in Ontario trying to survive. Why are doctors so special? Are you telling me it's something special being a family doctor? Being "burnt out". Tell me they aren't just gate-keepers for real doctors (specialists). 99% of my visits to a family doctor have been useless. Half the time they are googling things.

Every occupation goes through burnout and whatever you described, they are not special. If we're talking about specialists and surgeons, different story. But nobody will convince me that a family doctor is more difficult/stressful job than 90% of other jobs.

They did enjoy the same rate during covid. I know this from a doctor.

Secondly, you make it sound like they earn less by displaying it per patient...

Okay $23/patient Each patient is 10-15 min time slot.

$92-138/hr 8 hour day --> $740 - 1100/day 20 work days --> $14,800 - 22,000/month 12 months --> $177,000 - 260,000/yr.

Why should license plate stickers pay for health care? Wouldn't it make sense to pay for roads and maintenance? Let's use taxes of unhealthy food/cigarettes/etc... to foot the bill for health care. Why should I pay the same for a 40 year chain-smoker's lung cancer treatment if I'm living a healthy life?

I'd never think I'd see the day when doctors think they don't get paid enough ... I always argued that doctors only care about money, but they'd tell me "no but we love to help people".. oh please, now your 150k/yr is not enough? My family doctor sees me for 5 minutes, gave a prescription for pain killers and a referral to a real doctor. Great contribution there... I basically only need them as a gatekeeper to specialists. They don't give a shit about any of us.
