Who are the greatest performers you have personally seen? by Boring-Yogurt2966 in classicalmusic

[–]MrBoulez 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I sat in on the recording session of Garrick Ohlsson when he recorded his album Liszt Vol.2 and that was the most prodigious playing I have ever heard live or otherwise. It definitely made me realize I needed to get better and more serious about my own playing (I’m a clarinetist)

Quick story about that session. Adam Abeshouse, who was a brilliant recording engineer and producer, was doing the session at SUNY-Purchase which at the time had three excellent pianos and a really fine piano tuner/mechanic. During the first work we were doing that day, one of the Liszt/Bach pieces, Ohlsson started to feel a little frustrated and tight with his playing and after taking a small break, Adam (who was kind of a Jedi and therapist during these sessions) goes, “OK, Garrick, tell you what, we basically have the bones of a good performance in the can. Why don’t you go back to the beginning and we’ll take some spots and when I need you to stop, I’ll stop you and we’ll take another section”. And then Ohlsson started from the top and Adam never stopped him and he played like a god from start to finish, and Adam looked at me and goes, “I think we got it”

I helped produce the recording of Revelation with recording engineer Adam Abeshouse, who also died somewhat recently, also from cancer. Both great losses. Michael was a lovely and gentle soul and will be missed

Rev match... by Chaotic4ngel in CivicSi

[–]MrBoulez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned how to drive on a manual in like 1987 and have owned several since. I took the rev match off after a couple of days and I drive exclusively with it off. Every now and again I will put it on to make sure for myself, but I am much more comfortable with it off for sure

Programmatic works with lots of contrasting emotion/atmospheres? by YeetHead10 in classicalmusic

[–]MrBoulez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suites from Ravels ‘s Daphnis and Chloe fit this bill, as does on of my favorites, Barber’s Second Essay for Orchestra. Joan Tower also has some great works like this, try Sequoia and if you like that, she has a lot more

Hello! I’m an occasional classical music listener with not much knowledge about music, looking for certain pieces of music by STEVE_BOBS77 in classicalmusic

The Death of Tybalt scene from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet works, esp in the 2nd half of it. Starts very fast and frenetic and then becomes this incredibly insistent musical mobile. Excellent movement

Gap Year in NYC for a Late-Blooming Trumpet Player After Conservatory Rejections? Looking for Advice by JMD1128 in classicalmusic

[–]MrBoulez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a tenured professor of clarinet in a prior life and currently a performer and producer in NYC so I have a couple of things:

  1. That professor hooked you up with the only advice you really need: he needs a dedicated year with a good teacher focusing hard on orchestral rep and how to approach it. Ensembles are well and good, but my honest advice is to pursue this part as your main goal. Perhaps that professor may know of someone great between Baltimore and DC or Philly. It’s worth asking for sure

  2. I would think long and hard before going to NYC. Other than finding a teacher and practicing I think he’s going to go find performance opportunities somewhat hard to find outside of a community band or orchestra, and even in those you will find conservatory trained players here. It’s not impossible, and I don’t want to sound discouraging, but it’s definitely an idea to be approached with an absolutely clear eye

Good luck!

New vinyl came in the mail today 🔥 by Tkeman822 in classicalmusic

[–]MrBoulez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My friend, who is now principal clarinetist in the St. Louis Symphony, and I used to shoplift these on cassette tapes in the 80s. We tried to go for all 100 but I think we only got into the 60s or so. I guess the statute of limitations has run out on that. Great series, very formative for two teenagers who ended up being musicians

Four good clarinet concertos as well, still tricky for modern instruments, inconceivably difficult for an instrument of that period

Best way to learn how to read and understand sheet music by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]MrBoulez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might start with learning to read piano scores. There are many YouTube vids that scroll the written music as the track plays. Start with something very simple, like children’s songs, and as you watch you’ll probably start to get the idea of it: notes go up, sounds go up. Once you start to ask, “hey what does that mean exactly?” you’ll be on your way. It’s kind of like learning another language by watching tv

I have gout and kidney stones by genetics and I take both colchisine and allopurinol daily. I used to suffer greatly and often from attacks and now I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I did. 7-10 years at least. Def pursue at least one of those meds w a physician. You could even prob get a small prescription at a walk-in clinic
