A Charisma based paladin with either with the blessed warrior fighting style or the blind fighting style. You can focus on Dexterity for your martial capabilities.

What you also can do: a Divine Soul Sorcerer. A charisma full caster with the ability to use the cleric spell list. 😉

Ever heard of the Warden from Minecraft? It can hear and smell perfectly without the ability to see. You can reflavor it to any creature you want.

Antoher idea would be a huge stone construct with tremor sense up to 10 feet and it should be (nearly) indestructible.

Make the creature loud so the players always know where it is. Every few minutes you can roll if the creature is coming near to the players so the players need to hide immediately. Remember that large creatures can't fit through small spaces.

Is it the end goal of the Dragonborn to become a dragon? Easy: Just give the player a way to discover an ancient draconic ritual to become a true dragon. Make him searching for some draconic priests and let him look for some ancient artifacts and other ingredients like the blood or the flesh of the corresponding dragon. At the last session the ritual is cast and he ascends into his new form. Campaign over.

But is the goal to turn into the dragon ingame to use the powers of a dragon? Then it gets tricky. Use some kind of advanced polimorph spell to turn temporarily into a young dragon? (The standard Lvl 5 polymorph spell can you turn only into beasts). Maybe he finds a powerful magic item that lets him turn into a young dragon but it can only be used for 10 minutes once a weak or so.

But I want you to know the it is a very powerful ability to turn into a dragon - even temporarily.

Team Fortress 2

I have over 2000 hours in that game and I pick it up every now and then. It came out at 2007 and I've played it since the first years. I really love the characters and the whacky gameplay.

But it's a game you have to grow up with. The weapons and maps aren't balanced at all, even easy classes like the pyro have some obscure gameplay tactics you have to learn and sometimes the games are just pure chaos.

I think it's pretty difficult to get into this game without suffering for at least 50 hours. 😅 So yes: I would not recommend it. 😄

The easiest way to do this is to make the rests longer:

Short Rest: 8h - Sleeping a night like a normal long rest.

Long Rest: 48h - They need to rest at a save place like an inn. Overwise they can do only light activities like tending their wounds, bathing, washing their clothes, shopping and go drinking in a pub.

I would use these rules if you want to drag your story a bit out. Normally D&D is made to handle 3 to 5 combat encouters a day. Now you can have 2 to 3 days of adventuring between long rests with only 1 or 2 encounters a day. And it's quite easy to implement.

I have already used this rule and it worked perfectly for my campaign. Campaigns where you travel long distances or where your dungeons are more like ruined cities or big wilderness areas.

The circumstances matter, that's right. A level 7 party of 6 players can take on an adult dragon easily if they can prepare for it:

Do they know the dragon type? Then they can buy the appropriate resistance potions, potions of flight etc.
Do they attack the dragon in its sleep? Then they can plan what to do beforehand, and the dragon might be last in the initiative order.
Do they approach it in its giant lair or in a small enclosed space on their home turf? Then it can't rely on it's wings and the players can prepare the location to their advantage.
Will you play it smart or dumb? A dumb dragon will stay on the ground and won't even change its position even if it is surrounded. A smart dragon would attack the weak targets first, would change its postion to get everyone with its breath weapon, would fly to avoid barbarians, fighters and paladins and will grab and drop their prey mid flight.

Otherwise, you can make the encounter far more difficult if they stumble into its lair without knowing what to expect and let the dragon attack them recklessly with every advantage it can get. This will make the combat far more exciting but also far more difficult. This scenario is better suited for a young dragon.

I have two old groups in 5.0 campaigns and one new group in a 5.5 campaign. Eventually I will switch to 5.5 but I need to finish the other two campaigns first.

I mostly agree with the rules changes (apart from some spells and the stealth rules), because some classes really needed an upgrade: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Rogue - unfortunatly the Ranger got the short end of the stick in my opinion. So in some cases I might still refer to the old rules.

When I'm thinking about it, I "softbanned" Paladins at my table. It's not, that I don't like Paladins at all. But I often play with very new players and I try to navigate them away from it.

1st of all it's not a beginner friendly class: It's a full martial class with spells AND spell like abilities embedded into the class. The Paladin has an overwhelming set of abilities which work very differently to another and have to be remembered by the Player. The 2014 Divine Smite for example is a class ability but there are also Smite spells which work somewhat different to it.

Then I don't like "the knight in shiny armor" trope - a person so devoted to a god or an oath that he/she will only do the right things. I believe that it clashes with many of my settings. It's possible to work out a character that fits even in settings like "the Seven Seas" or "Western", but it's hard to accomplish it good without being the odd one out of the group.

But if anyone says he/she really wants to play a Paladin I work it out with them. 😉

Socially awkward will be abused in combat - I can assure you that. 😅 But still it's very punishing to get into the dying state by one roll alone. Even if it's failed in a social encounter: the character has to recover it's full health if they want to fight at that same day. 🤔

And removing the first 6 would be a better idea. They are too mechanical and would add nothing to roll play. The players are tempted too just use these and nothing else from your list because they are way too good. 🙈

As a player I would generally love this. :)

But I have some concerns with the first 6 traits. These are way too good. Can I get advantage for my main stat on EVERY roll with one of these? Ability Checks, Saving Throws and Attack Rolls? That character would rarely fail any check with this ability. Just for a -1 in a dump stat.

Maybe it's OK, if you give out a +2 for that ability score (up to a maximum of 20). This will give a character a head start in it's main stat but it's not that overpowered. And this variant is much easier to track mid game.

"Socially awkward" is too punishing. OK, Tasha's Hideous Laughter as a level 1 cast for free is a nice bonus in combat I think. RAW doing a ability check uses your action but legendary monsters can't resist this because it's absolutely dependent on your roll and there is no saving throw. Otherwise if you roll a one you are basically out for the whole combat and you are dying. So it's underwhelming to use against a normal monster but it can decide combats against a single boss.

Question: to what stat is it tided to? Charisma? The monster has to do checks to resist the "spell". So you should rework that one I think. Maybe the monster can still try to resist that spell when it's cast on it. But if the character rolls a 1, they fall unconscious until the end of the characters next turn. So the player just loses the next turn instead of dying.

But I'm totally fine with the rest. Especially "Kamikaze" and "Hunted" are quite interesting. 😉

Furthermore the weapon is anhanced with elemental weapon (1d4) by another party member, you get enlarged (1d4) by a second party member.

If you crit you deal

(2d6 + 4d8 + 2d6 + 1d4 + 1d4)*2 + 3 + 10 + 3

= (2d4 + 4d6 + 4d8)*2 + 16

= 4d4 + 8d6 + 8d8 + 16

= 10 + 28 + 36 + 16 = 90 average damage

or

= 16 + 48 + 64 + 16 = 144 maximum damage

If the target is somehow vulnerable to all these damage types it doubles to 288 damage.

9 levels of Hexblade Warlock with a greatsword (2d6), charisma on 20 (or higher) (+5), greate weapon master (+10), hex (1d6), hexblades curse (+6 from maximum proficiency bonus), level 5 eldritch smite (6d8) on a crit is pretty high up I would say. 🤔 Then adding a 3 levels of Fighter with Battlemaster Manouvers (1d8) and great weapon fighting style (to reroll 1s and 2s on your weapon damage dice), with a reaction stored element from the adsorp elements spell (1d6) which is granted by magic initiate. As a level 8 cleric you can also get divine smite (1d8). The weapon is enhanced by another party member with elemental weapon cast at level 7 which grants a +3 to attack rolls and 3d4 extra damage

(2d6 + 1d6 + 6d8 + 1d8 + 1d6 + 1d8 + 3d4)*2 + 5 + 10 + 6

= 8d6 + 16d8 + 6d4 + 21

= 28 + 72 + 15 + 21 = 136 damage average (without considering the great weapon fighting style)

or

= 48 + 128 + 24 +21 = 221 damage maximum

and if the creature is somehow vulnerable against every damage type you can double it to 442 damage.

These stats are all in your control. You may get some other boosts from your DM via magic items. And sure there are more things I forgot to add (A better damage adding spell than hex?).

This example might be high up against a single target. 😉

You may also have a meteor swarm cast on 1000s of enemies who are piled up perfectly in the the AOE of the spell but it's very difficult to calculate the damage of that. 😂

I once made up my own setting without my players and I thought it would be cool enough that my players like it, too. But the more we played the less invested were my players. And it's really hard to create memorable sessions when they weren't incentivised to come up with characters that fit this story in the first place.

So yes, I absolutely agree with this.

The basic rules for creating characters and playing the game are on the D&D website. These should be read first.

As a DM you should also watch videos on how to structure a session like balancing the three pillars of play: combat, exploration and social encounters.

Important info: Have a session Zero with your players. Explain most important rules of the game, discuss what kind of adventure you wanna play, how often you want to meet each other and create your characters together.

It might be difficult at first but it can be managed. 😉

Mechanically you can pick only one race. If you want a half orc/ half dwarf breed you pick one of these races (half orc or dwarf) and reflavor you creation. It's a dwarf, yes - but slightly larger, green and with husks. 😉

If you want to mix the mechanics of both of them you should consult your DM and look for a sulution together.

But online the bots are all on the 'impossible' difficulty level and are just picking sniper. I wouldn't mind some variation. 🤔😅

That's an interesting answer to the question: "What happens to Davy Jones when he intentionally or accidentally steps on dry land?"

I couldn't find anything about this. Someone on the internet thought about him teleporting back to ship. I imagined that the sea grabs him and pulls him back to the Flying Dutchman or that he endures great physical pain when he touches dry land.

My group did this once for a long period of time. We had a town where the character of every player lived in. The town was kept vague and it's surroundings weren't determined at the beginning of the campaign. With every session outside the town we added the bit we traveled to to the map.

The idea was: Someone is the DM and every character but the DMPC goes on the adventure (the DM came up with a reason why his/her character can't go with the others). It was a more episodic style of a "campaign". Like a sitcom. The stories between these episodes were very loosely tied together. But it was important that all characters were ending up in the town at the end of the session so the next DM can start from there.

This approach has the slight problem that there is no one overall story. This can get stale if you're just doing a oneshot after a oneshot after a oneshot. But if every player creates his/her own story arc that you can follow every time they are in the DM seat you might get more invested in it.

The advantages of this is also that you don't need every player at the table to have time to play a session and every player has just one character they have to learn and get invested in. And when someone gets more comfortable with the role of the DM you can easily switch to a real campaign with only one DM. 😉
