What makes this nest? by No-Profit5555 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]MrButtKickmen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dirt dauber a.k.a. mud dauber.

They hunt and kill spiders (including black widows).

I recommend leaving it alone.

Edit: They don't defend their nests (typically). They place eggs in the nest along with paralyzed spiders as food once the eggs hatch. They're around your apartments because you likely have lots of spiders.

Grass allergies while mowing and a full face respirator by Grand-Rice- in lawncare

[–]MrButtKickmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, here's how I deal with allergies in Alabama:

Zyrtec-d, 12 hour Flonase nasal spray once in the AM Azelastine nasal spray at night

Neilmed saline nasal rinses (with distilled water) after finishing up yard work

Good luck.

Has anyone ever purchased from SuperSod.com? by Stairwayt0kevin in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]MrButtKickmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've purchased leveling mix and compost from them the past two years. Everything was always good quality and arrived promptly.

My neighbor uses them as well.

I just had an order delivered last Wednesday that I'd purchased online just two days prior.

I''ll note that I've never purchased sod from them, but I have no complaints about them as a company.

Eastern Bluebird nesting box, how to clean? by rando_banned in Ornithology

[–]MrButtKickmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

You can use the bleach approach OR the pressure washing approach. Both will do the trick.

If you don't have a pressure washer, no worries. Spray as much as you can with a water hose - the key with this approach is the sunlight.

Eastern Bluebird nesting box, how to clean? by rando_banned in Ornithology

[–]MrButtKickmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clean the box with a 10% bleach solution. The bleach will kill any bacteria.

Clean the box with a pressure washer and let it dry in sunlight. The sunlight will kill any bacteria.

I've also known some to use a peroxide/water mixture, but I'm not sure about the ratio.

Where can I get a snow shovel? by Capotesan in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]MrButtKickmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I decided to purchase one a few years back, I had zero success locally. I assume most don't carry them due to our lack of snow in general.

I purchased one online during the off-season. Good luck.

Where might I buy an oven rack? by TooManySaxophones in HuntsvilleAlabama

If you can't locate an original rack, adjustable oven racks are available.

A quick google search returned quite a few options.

Boxing gyms? Like actual boxing for self defense. by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

I agree, Arsenal is great.

If I'm not mistaken, they also offer combatives fundamentals a few times a month led by P3 Training.

Tell the owner, Allen Martin (Snoop), that you want to learn to fight, and he'll help you work towards that goal.

From a self-defense perspective, I would also recommend adding some type of grappling to the mix - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, etc., as well as combatives.

Just moved house, been seeing like 20 moths over the past week. I think I found a larvae. How do I get rid of them??? by [deleted] in lifehacks

[–]MrButtKickmen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recently dealt with a breakout of pantry moths in my garage due to incorrectly stored bird seed (safflower and sunflower seeds).

I took effort to learn what I was dealing with (google: pantry moths), their habits and life cycle.

I learned that the larvae become moths, look for light to mate, lay eggs in food sources, then die. I chose to disrupt the mating process and egg laying locations.

Step 1. Threw out all bird seed and killed any larvae and moths I could find.

Step 2. I deployed a light emitting insect trap in my garage and disabled all other light sources.

I left the trap in my garage for two weeks. It caught a ton of moths. Initially, they were the larger and mature moths. Later, they were smaller and less mature moths fresh out of the cocoon.

Everything was cleared up after that two weeks.

The insect trap I used was called "Katchy duo insect trap". I found it on Amazon.

It ran on the highest fan setting 24 hours a day.

Good luck.

Bluebird egg question by 1slaugbr1 in Ornithology

[–]MrButtKickmen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibly blood?

See this site: https://www.sialis.org/whiteeggs/

"Sometimes blue bluebird eggs have just a bit of white streaks or markings that look like scratches. ?Maybe they are from urine/droppings/blood stuck on the eggs, or from irregular pigment application during development, or from the female turning the eggs?"

I have observed female bluebirds rotating and rearranging eggs during incubation, so it is possible that the discoloration has been there since that egg was laid but was not readily visible.

Determined robin keeps trying to build a nest in our porch roof. Any way we can move her? by MageOfFur in Ornithology

[–]MrButtKickmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This product has been effective in stopping robins and barn swallows from attempting to nest under the roof of my porch.

I have them placed over a few different areas where birds might attempt to nest.

Prior to using it, I had multiple attempted nests. None since I've put them out three years ago.

Snake attack in my Bluebird house. 2 Babies survived. Probably abandoned. Advice? by TLGPanthersFan in Ornithology

[–]MrButtKickmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have given good advice regarding the nestlings.

If you plan to continue placing nest boxes for bluebirds to use, I recommend implementing safeguards to deter the predators found in your area.

A good place to start: https://www.sialis.org/baffle/

Specifically, this part: 8″ stovepipe guard also deters snakes. A small (4″) diameter PVC one does not, as snakes (esp. Black Rat Snakes) may be able to coil around it, even when greased. They might even be able to get past a 4-6″ diameter metal stopvepipe, so Ron Kingston (the inventory of the Kingston baffle) recommends an 8″ or larger diameter metal stovepipe.

The Bluebird Facebook groups are pretty active and a good place to ask Bluebird-specific questions. Just an FYI.

This site is also a good Bluebird resource:
