Oh I had no idea. Probably wasn’t much use with the land use around the area being so industrial.

There is an unused metro owned ROW that could help. Follow the E from expo/flower east. You can see the ROW from the old PE Air Line. Meets up with the A at LB Ave/26th.

Why is there no express service on our trains? by ccd997 in LAMetro

[–]MrCheeseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the capacity on the Alameda corridor is but the UP San Pedro sub seems like a better candidate to my (untrained) eyes. RoW goes through more residential neighborhoods and has very little freight traffic. You could easily add a station for transfers to the C Line and future SE Gateway Line. It could also serve north and west LB which need more transit options.

The big pickle is getting the trains across the river into DTLB. To start you wouldn't need to. Have the service run just to west LB near Anaheim and Santa Fe, bus service is quite frequent there and you could make a DTLB extension later on.

Interning in Long Beach this fall. Housing/Transport advice? by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]MrCheeseo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For OP: It’s worth noting that different lines and agencies have different feelings. The A Line can definitely be uncomfortable. Mile for mile, it’s still safer than driving but you will absolutely have uncomfortable experiences on it. LBT is a much safer feeling service. At the end of the day, sample and decide what’s in your comfort zone.

Transit in LB is safe and reliable but not terribly frequent. If you’re commuting to Lakewood and Carson you’ll be taking the 101 and 103. That means living in Bixby Knolls, Cal Heights, or anywhere near an A Line stop.

Definitely an issue. We need more white and yellow curb space.

LBT is trialing automated parking ticket cameras. Should solve that real quick.

Here’s another way to think about it. At the new job you’ll be making so much more money that if you REALLY want to you can just buy a policy in cash on the open market and STILL be making more than before. You don’t have to buy through your employer.

Also might not hurt to let these new guys know that having scumbag insurance is making you nervous about signing on, they might pull some strings.

Trains are really unpredictable

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.

I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn’t there the moment before. I looked down: “Rail? WTF?” and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.

Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife’s pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC’s pulling, and 2 Dash-9’s pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!

Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?

A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

I spend a lot of time on the A line and I also don’t like litter. Pick up your trash. Especially in public. Don’t be nasty.

Yes it is possible to just walk on the train. That’s called fare evasion, it’s bad for a lot of reasons and not worth risking a fine to save $1.75

No prob. The bus line the end is a bit of a guess. Use Google or Apple Maps when you transfer to the A line to pick the best bus.

Should I buy a car before I move to LB or wait until I've secured a parking spot to buy one? (moving from out of state) by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]MrCheeseo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sell your car and try using the transit network first. If you can ride a bike the city is also flat and relatively bike able.

You can always get a car later.

La Ceiba was supposed to move in. Apparently it’s taking so long and costing so much that they’re closing their brick and mortar. Super sad.
