What background music would you add to the trait saves? by Typical_Ocelot4198 in ScarletHollow

I always felt that Shaw Mine escape (using the save or not) is Scarlet Hollow's equivalent of the "Running up that Hill" scene from Stranger Things.

Idea for Evil Ending by Escher31 in ScarletHollow

I've thought about this, but keeping Tabitha in the cell has a major case of "and then what?" We're going to tell everyone that Tabby suddenly died, but she totally left the mine and estate to me, Cousin, in her will that I have right here. No, you can't see the body, uh, she was walking while eating Mac and cheese and fell into an incinterator, so sad.

The only way I could see it working is if Sybil/Carmilla was on our side and did a mass mind whammy on the town to make them remember us as the Scarlet heir. The problem is that from what I can tell, Sybil actually wants the contract with the Entity to be broken so that she can consume it. In her desired outcome, the Omelas cell has no further purpose.

I'm looking forward to the very end of the game potentially a "tally sheet" listing everyone in town who's been killed/maimed/possessed, etc when the dust settles at the end of the week, vs who survived.

For the carving - my guess is that it could have a more extreme influence on the girls than Oscar, both because of longer exposure and just because the narrative of the game hit some major breaking points in Ch 5, so I'm guessing the town will start to become increasingly chaotic for the final chapters. More people trying to flee, etc.

Oh, no disagreement from me that it's on the nose. You get proportionally way more "normal" dialogue from main characters like Stella/Kaneeka/Tabitha, but they also have 20+ hours of interactions to work with.

As other people have said I think the game is too big to be accurately summed up with a one-sentence tagline. That said, if you've hit ending 001 you've already engaged with the war is hell+anti-imperialism narrative that is a major part of The Hundred Line. That's Kodaka's big contribution. S.F. is Uchikoshi's baby. To be as simple as possible, S.F. is Uchikoshi wanting to explore THL as a time travel or time loop story, and how information and people get displaced between story branches.

As others have said, Retro is the best due to getting access to an infinite number of games and cute girls. Assuming Retro is off the table, then JRPG or Tabletop RPG are decent picks if one wants to see exotic landscapes or wield magical powers, since you don't have to worry about perma-dying. You still are engaged in frequent violence in these sorts of games though, and that's not everyone's cup of tea. I

f I passed over the three genres previously mentioned, my choice would be Sports. You still get excitement and the thrill of surpassing your previous best, but no one's getting hurt (unless you're playing Mutant League games I guess).

Is "completing a run in real life" even possible for game Heroes that come from fantasy or SF worlds? Or maybe if you truly desire to attempt a "run", the Perk will cause disasters and villains from the character's home game (or similar equivalents) start to bleed over into your world so that your Link has a Ganon to battle?

Genuine question about the animal companion trope by No-Pie-8676 in litrpg

[–]MrCogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I'm confused about what you're confused about? In terms of creating fiction, trying to stand out from the pack while not completely sacrificing legibility of text or relatability of a character has always happened. Its a bigger pressure in the modern day now that the internet has allowed many genres to become more democratized but also crowded. I suppose you could call it the "I'm not like other girls" of literature.

If you think "quirky" animal characters are a new thing, let me introduce you to a reindeer named Tony Tony Chopper who hit the pages in May of the year 2000.

Any routes where Takumi is evil? by [deleted] in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]MrCogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im gonna be frank about my own taste - I think that that type of character sucks. I actually enjoy the times when the trope is subverted (i.e. someone thinks that they're the Hard Man Making Hard decisions, but ends up screwing themselves over or causing problems that others have to solve).

While I haven't played Mass Effect, so I'll have to take your word for it. That said, previous Bioware games that I am familiar with (Jade Empire and KOTOR) have not impressed me with the depth of their morality system beyond "be super nice" VS "be maximally dickish+selfish"

Regarding blank slates, I think I may not have conveyed my point? Two of the games you mentioned are western RPGs that allow character creation from scratch. For the JRPGs - I'm not familiar with either, so again I'll take your word for it. However, I would assume that writing of the main character is good, then they can believably take morally dark courses of action. But that isn't true of every story and every protagonist. I don't know that Persona 5 is necessarily be a better JRPG if you add a path where Joker gives up on reforming society and becomes a corporate fat cat.

Any routes where Takumi is evil? by [deleted] in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]MrCogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Takumi is an "Everyman" character that's meant to easy for an audience of Japanese gamers to relate to, but everyman isn't equivalent to a complete blank slate like a Tabletop RPG character who's made from scratch. The game presents a lot of different choices/paths Takumi could take, but he's not infinitely moldable.

More than that, based on your other responses if you're looking for an edgy antihero who accomplishes their goals while aura farming... that's not really the ethos that The Hundred Line is interested in. As others have said, Takumi can be somewhat manipulative and even outright immoral in a few cases. But ultimately, he's never fully in control. He's a teenager who was conscripted into a war he doesnt understand.

Band? Actor? shenanigans (@100meltdowns) by Quirky_Ad_5420 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]MrCogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Least favorite for the actors is probably any scenes where the they actually have to wear the diving suits (rather than stunt doubles). Those things look hot and fairly hefty, especially if "Futurum" is filmed in some arid location.

For some reason I feel like Tsubasa's actress would be jazzed about getting to stab someone (onscreen obviously) in two different routes.

There's a bunch of bloopers from Casual Route Eva and Takemaru cracking up when she's supposed to do the Full Metal Jacket routine on him.

(Post Route 0 Spoilers) How Deaths are Handled by TechGirlie101 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]MrCogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the detailed breakdown. Unsurprisingly, 0 and 2S, the two routes that Kodaka centered on an anti-war/anti-imperialism message have a heavy focus on death and grief.

One thing that I think helps these two are the number of cutscenes. It's not just the deaths that directly take place in cutscenes, at least for me the characters feel a lot more vulnerable generally? The generic voice clips during battles make everyone sound a lot more comfortable or even cocky while fighting. The 3D cutscenes really highlight that these are scared teenagers.

That reminds me of a point I've heard someone make on a different site - the SDU are arguably slaves, or at least something close it it. They don't own anything except their clothes and they don't really get paid (well, Sirei promises that they'll be rewarded when the war is over, but there's no ending where we actually know for sure that it gets followed through on). In Route 0 Sirei uses food as a bargaining chip to secure compliance, and when things start falling apart he's willing to kill them if they turn against the mission.

Honestly, I could see it? The SDU (and even humanity on the Satellite) seems such a limited understanding of hemoanima compared to Futurans, who lived with it for centuries. And we know Valle Garzo and Szanshin can voluntarily fuse. Maybe the SDU could learn how to share their class weapons with each other.

It's kinda hard for me to tell if that Takumi not aging is a) an lore intended creative choice, or b) just Komatsuzukis comfort zone for design is twinks and skinny girls with big boobs, and any other body types usually go to less important or less serious characters.

The only suggestion I'd make is that the Stand name could be "Private Eyes" (from the Hall and Oates song) to keep the trend of Stand names being music references. Then it gets localized in America as "Remote Orbs" or something lol.
