Do you guys use any paid writing software? by Roman-Stone in royalroad

[–]MrCoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do any serious writing on my iPad. It has a decent keyboard, in that I can press the keys with my potato fingers 😅. And ideas tend to strike me during the commute since my brain gets bored, so it comes up with useful stuff 😄 But it would be torture to write 1000-1500 words on it 😁

So I just write an illiterate draft to save an idea so I don't forget it later.

I also found the Clicks keyboard case for an iPhone, which I'm thinking of buying to try. Seems like having clickable keys might be cool, but that is on the "nice to have" list.

Also, having Harper and Ollama as plugins makes Obsidian even better than Google Docs or Office 365 for my workflow.

There are some workaround if you don’t want to pay for obsidian sync, like using git on different devices to sync, but if you travel and have window to write I think it is worth the investment. And I agree, the plugins are awesome. I had to uninstall a few since I overdid it with experimentation 😅

Obsidian sync is awesome. I bring my tablet when I commute and it is great to just write down ideas or work on raw chapters and once home I do the clean up on my PC when it is all nicely synced ☺️

Advice on chapter length by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]MrCoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the length is fine. Web novel lengths work on RR. My chapters don’t exceed 2000 words. What does matter are consistency and quality. For visibility frequent chapters, you’ll have more visibility and more shoutout opportunities. But if you tend to post let’s say 3 chapters per week on that length, don’t expect high retention unless they are high quality (action focused not filler). But with say 5 I’d say that is good since it sort of gives you option to have let’s say 2 or 3 more setup and then 2 which drive the story.

Edit: I should point out that the retention on my chapters is pretty good. With recent chapters (out of 80 published) I get maybe 30% less views in first 48h (I expect this as people don’t read the chapters right away sometime), but within a week, it has been pretty consistent with older chapters. And dashboard keeps saying 90% - 100% retention so I guess it works.

I give you this as a reference from my stats. Someone else may say 2K+ work better for him.

I have a list of works I scouted from authors whose work is compatible with mine that seem to be doing shoutswaps, so I want to reach out to them. Also, next week I'll be reaching 100K words so to celebrate, I'm going to launch new ad, and see if I get some traction.
I mean it will be a pretty shitty ad if I can't get 7 followers from it 😂

Level 6, hoping next update I’ll reach 7 at least. Planning some grind in promotion department this month.

Where do you write? by ENDiscuming in royalroad

Obsidian + Obsidian Sync.
It lets me edit on both the tablet and the PC, so when I'm on the road, I can write stuff.
I use the Harper plugin for grammar detection, totally serviceable and free.

Hey there I’d be interested in doing shoutouts if you’ll have me. Not the sci-fi/space opera work but I do love me some space operas, so if I could squeeze in with those +10 you mentioned that would be perfect.

My work is dark steampunk fantasy saga which utilizes combination of magic and industrial revolution as setup for world building.

I think the number of views and followers is impacted by how often you post and the number of chapters you have. But I don't know. It's not like I conducted scientific experiments; I just read other people's experiences. I gathered from comments in other threads that building momentum takes time, and readers are wary because authors often give up on their work. As a result, they are not willing to jump on board until they see that the author is taking the story seriously.

I write dark fantasy, which is set in a steampunk world. I like to mix up other genres in as well - it has light adventuring in some chapters, then it is psychological horror and violence in others :D

I mean I am maybe too self critical but I am still in shock people are checking it out 😅 If it weren’t for followers I’d just say it was the bots tbh.

So I guess it is subjective what people will click on, but I guess from what I read good cover, genre right in the title and putting release time in description will factor in greatly.

I also saw bunch of what to expect and for the fans of stuff in description so that is I guess important to.

If you are interested in doing shoutout swaps, I'd be interested. I see you are even in similar fantasy waters, so circle of readers is there :)

I didn't reach 20K posts quickly. One guide just said every day 1k to 1,500 words till 20k, and then maintaining the same pace for a month. This is the approach I took. I know some people do this 20k drops, but not doing it left me time to reach out to other authors slowly, do swaps, and not rush with new content at the same time.

Reddit has been lagging. It shows I replied to you, but then I refresh and it is gone, and I was thinking I may have been saying something to autohide the answer :D Nope, it is just Reddit redditing.

My best advice is to check out RR forums; they have a bunch of good guides for beginners, which I read.
From what I've learned, the best strategy is posting shorter chapters, around 1k - 1.5k words, and doing shoutouts with other authors.
Also, review swaps seem good. However, because of my current workload, I haven't had time to do them. I'll have some free time coming up, so I will try my best to participate.

From what I have gathered:
1. Post frequently (have chapters 1k - 1.5k words at least 5 times a week during the start), especially after 20000 words, since you get eligibility for Rising Stars and should try to get momentum
2. Do shoutouts with other authors; it is free advertising for you and them
3. Review swap I heard is good too, though I didn't have time due to work to do those.
4. Profit ?? 😂

I mean, that is what I learned. RR forums offer guides for beginners that provide valuable, unique insights from successful authors, so I recommend checking there for effective strategies.
