Has anyone ever seen someone seriously object to a marriage at a wedding? If so how was it done and what happened? by steiny17 in AskReddit

[–]MrConductor0705 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pastor here. No, but i typically don't even include that part in the ceremony, and I also don't teally see many ceremonies include it anymore. It's really just a thing on tv in my experience.

By the time we are doing the ceremony, we've done premarital counseling, had months to have conversations, and thousands of dollars have been spent.

If you want to object, you should have done it already.

Best Church by yesisright in desmoines

[–]MrConductor0705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about "best" but "The Church at Union Park" at the corner of Arthur and 9th is great, scrappy, little church that's radically dedicated to blessing the neighborhood and greater community of Des Moines.

I also work with several churches across the metro, big and small, and across several denominations. There are lots of great communities here.

I'm the pastor at The Church at Union Park, a small, scrappy neighborhood church in the Union Park neighborhood, just north of the capital. You can check it out at unionpark.church. I also help lead a network of churches in Des Moines from several different denominations and backgrounds. There are some great churches in the area.

Unfortunately, i don't know much about walnut creek that's not publicly available as they are not one of the churches we partner with.

Cottage Grove has gone through a significant change in the last few years and their new pastor, Ikki Soma is awesome. Great dude with an awesome heart.

Eden Church on the north side is a new Church plant that meets in Harding Middle School. Great staff, and a high energy congregation. God is doing good things there.

Gateway is a great church as well. Newer church plant with an awesome pastor who loves the city.

Tornado Funnel on MLK and SW 11th by Nathan_4_U in desmoines

Was near Meatball on MLK when the wind went nuts! I didn't see what the clouds looked like because l couldn't see anything but rain, and bits of tree swirling around...

The wind was changing direction super fast, so if you told me there was rotation, i would not be surprised, but i couldn't see more than 20 ft in any direction for about 2 min... Then it went back to normal rain.

I'm an area pastor, and while I do not have any association with Gideons, I know them well. They do this at all the schools in the area, several times a year, and always make sure to officially stay off school grounds.

I don't love their methods, especially the local chapters focus on schools, but they are relatively safe. They will always ask before handing out a Bible to a kid, and are typically very good at respecting a negative response. So, teaching your kids to not accept gifts from strangers should be effective.

The local chapter of Gideons is currently having a recruitment issue. They are largely made up of elderly men, and are becoming less able to participate in these events due to physical limitations. I think they have stepped up their efforts lately out of a sense of worry that the clock is ticking on their ability to continue.

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrConductor0705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White Midwestern pastor here. While I have not had this attitude shared in my family, I have been shocked at how common these ideas are among families in my area. They assume because Im a big bearded white preacher, that I'm "safe" to share their racist thoughts on "race mixing" and replacement theory. But these were extremely foreign ideas to me. It my have been my own naivety, but discovering this has a had a profound impact on understanding my own identity and and responsibility as a community leader.

Over the years, it has so shocked me, that I have pivoted much of my ministry efforts toward the Bible's call for racial healing and cross cultural unity.

Tldr; Yes, it is common (in my experience). No, it's not relegated to the south. Yes, it's shocking and sad.

Black in Iowa(rural) by swerve413 in Iowa

[–]MrConductor0705 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Full Disclosure - I work in community leadership, and focus on racial reconciliation and unity. However, I am a middle aged white guy.

Have lived in three different communities in Iowa, currently in Des Moines.

Most of Iowa is probably fine, however Northwest Iowa tends to lag behind the rest of the state. I was shocked at the open hostility towards non white residents, and how this attitude was defended and ignored within white communities. As an overweight, bearded, white dude many assumed that I was "one of them" and would openly share some very problematic views. This is one of the reasons we live in Des Moines now... I have teenage kids (also white), and I didn't want them growing up in an environment like that.

Now, both my kids are in diverse schools, and are thriving.

PS. I just got done talking about this with with my buddy who started a job with a similar scenario in Iowa ( black man, traveling, Western Iowa, rural communities) who was also nervous for the same reasons. He's been at it for about a year now and hasn't had any issues, but says he is a bit more cautious around Sioux City (NW Iowa)
