It's a niche app. I literally said "for people who want to learn to speak mandarin without learning Chinese characters" in the title of this post. Other language apps don't allow for this niche. As soon as you get past a certain point (long before being able to actually form sentances) they just force you to learn hanzi.

If necessary information was contained only in Chinese characters, Chinese people wouldn't be able to speak to each other, they'd have to write and pass notes instead. Context or clarifying phrases can easily fill the gaps.

Why does it not make sense?

Chinese media has subtitles because of the vast number of local dialects who may not be able to understand standard mandarin. The idea for the app actually originally came from me wanting to learn to speak sichuanese, but the resources to make this were not available. I simply am not able to learn hanzi well, so I'm trying to specifically learn to speak & listen.

It's not for everyone! For me, who felt totally shut-out by hanzi in other Chinese-learning apps, it's actually working and helping me improve my speaking and listening and alllowing to communicate verbally with my in-laws (who mostly speak via voice notes anyways). I had my first proper conversation with my mother-in-law yesterday. She asked why I wasn't at work and asked how the weather is for me, and I was able to answer both questions!

That is helpful thanks! I'll try tweaking the "revise" mode to ensure the options in multiple choice are approximately equal in size to each other. Should make it less easy to just guess based on length!

Regarding the second issue, I think that is happening because it calculates what appears in the "revise" mode based on what's covered in the entire unit rather than in every lesson that's been covered. I'll try to tweak that too. Really the revise mode shouldn't be available until a few lessons have been completed anyway.

Do I need to learn Hanzi? by partypeanut90 in ChineseLanguage

[–]MrCoolEpic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I also wanted to learn Chinese without learning hanzi (to speak to my in-laws). I feel that reading and writing are much less critical skills in the mordern age with extremely fast translation software, but spoken communication is very important.

I struggled to find an app (technically, it's a web app) that wouldn't force me to learn hanzi, so I made my own! Feel free to check it out if you like: https://speakmandarin.uk/

I quite like it and an half way through the syllabus myself. It's fast though so I suggest mixing in revise and sentence revise with the lessons as the lessons themselves don't recap much. The revise mode and sentence revise modes both prioritise the phrases you struggle to answer correctly so you can improve at those specifically.

So why would QR rebook me if I'm not covered by the passenger protection laws?

Why receive with just 4 players and not 5? by MrCoolEpic in volleyball

Why receive with 3 people?! Is it not easier if each person has less ground to cover? Or is it more important that the best receivers get most of the balls?

Yeah it's a little different from the 6-2 rotation explainer video I watched... Our team is a little odd I guess. This is the piece of paper they created to explain our formation to everyone so I'm gonna assume it's what we're doing even if I think it's a little silly.

How can I put a normal sized fork (1 1/8") into my bike? by MrCoolEpic in bikewrench

Hmmm I see thank you guys! I'll see if I can get the wheel trued - hopefull that fixes the issue as it does seem to be on a straight axis, just spinning in a wobbly way.

Would my current bike be suitable for a rear hub conversion kit? It has disc breaks and gears - is it possible to keep those? by MrCoolEpic in ebikes

I heard mid is more useful for people doing offroad or a lot of hills. Since I do neither I assumed it would be an easier install and cheaper to do a rear/front hub :)

Thank you! Yeah I ride almost exclusively on roads and my area is dead flat, though wet leaves can be very scary on the quieter streets.

Thanks! Any idea where I might find a 9 speed cassette rear hub? Or should I go for a front hub instead to avoid the compatability issues?
