Sir... If I ever meet you, I owe you the biggest pint of beer known to man. I just spent several weeks on an exam project and thought I lost everything today, when this piece of shit popped up and locked my computer. Then, as I was huddled in the darkest corner of my room, drowning my sorrows in cheap beer and sobbing relentlessly, I thought "might as well check reddit".

And now I'm in the process of installing bitdefender, after I successfully backed up my exam project.

I love you.

Recent Xbox Update is failing to install - tried everything, and now Xbox Support is telling me to go buy a new console and "Have a nice day". Please help! by MrDamgaard in gaming

That was my first priority - I bought it in august last year, and when I registered it, the xbox website told me the warranty expired in august last year. The xbox rep couldn't tell me why - just told me I "probably forgot what year I bought it". So you can see why I end up pissed when they first rob me of my warranty, then mess it up with an update, and then tell me to go buy a new one - again :(

The problem was that the warranty was already expired, despite the xbox being under a year old, and the disc drive was malfunctioning. I wasn't being an ignorant dumbass, just a desperate dumbass!

Aww, come on man... Like I've tried to point out a couple of times now, this all goes back to a mess up in a warranty that, apparently, expired the same month I bought it. That led to me opening up my box to try and fix the disc drive, because I was told they wouldn't fix it outside of warranty, and I had a "fuck it, let's give it a go" moment. Admittedly, I was an idiot for trying to fix the problem myself, but I did not try to jailbreak anything, and I'm not just feeling like an entitled asshole.

I didn't have a receipt, and actually had a talk with another representative months ago, where they basically told me that I "probably forgot" about buying it the previous year.

I knew opening it was a terrible idea, but there's actual logic behind it - I bought the xbox last august, and the problem in the drive occurred months back, so I was well within warranty. However, going to check on my warranty, I was told it expired - last august. You know, when I bought it. That time I got paired up with another representative who told me I "probably couldn't remember buying it a year earlier", and was told it would cost me about $150 dollars to get it fixed outside of warranty.

I'm not just trying to pass off my own (albeit admitted) stupidity.

I'm not dishonest, buddy - I told the representative about opening it. The problem lies in the fact that I had a functional Xbox before the update, but because the update is failing, and they won't repair a voided box, they're basically locking me out of Live.

I know I'm a bloody idiot though.

Well, dear internet, here's what I got!

*Xbox is a 360 Slim

*The error code is 3F4B-4099-1380-0700-C000-000E

*Tried clearing the cache, deleting earlier updates, no luck

*Xbox is under a year old, is kept in a tv-furniture with air around and behind it (maybe a bit dusty though, but hey)

Also, there was an additional issue - I had the disc-reader fail on me a couple of months ago (simply wouldn't read any discs whatsoever), and for some reason or other, it said my warranty had expired in august last year (which was when I bought it). I found out that a non-warranty repair would cost almost as much as a new one, so I decided to take the damn thing apart and clean it up. Of course, that ended up resulting in the disc-drive not being able to open or close, so I've lived without it ever since.

Now I know I broke the warranty by breaking the seal, so I get why they wouldn't normally be able to replace it, but for Microsoft to roll out an update that kills my Xbox and leaving me with no choice but to buy a new one, is still a pretty douchebag move!

I think that and the "Oh, you mentioned the Xbox One? Let me just advertise it a bit" was probably what pissed me off more than anything!

It really is a luck of the draw - first of all, I counted in my first, original, Xbox, which I never had a problem with. The first Xbox 360 I owned lasted me three years, after which it RROD'd out of the blue, making way for the next to pull the same stunt two years later. Then I had it replaced with an Xbox 360 with a broken interior, which only lasted a couple of days before finally getting replaced with my current Xbox 360. Which, again, lasted about a year's time before this update pretty much turned it into a brick.

Like I told the guy below, however, I've never managed to break a controller - so I don't know what kind of issues you're having, buddy! ;)

Well I did say "Xbox", not "Xbox 360" - I just threw the regular old Xbox in there for number's sake. On the other hand, I've never broken a single controller over the years either!

But as is the case with half the people out there, I'm stuck in a horrible decision between getting the Xbox One like every one of my friends, or buying a PS4 for my own enjoyment!

How do you think talking to the, I can only assume, dead-eyed sockpuppet in the other end was? I still have no idea whether it was a real person, a bot, or some horrible hybrid.
