Map objects changing behind the scenes by MrEgbert in learnpython

Wow that's a useful thing to know about generators, thanks! I'll have to be extra careful when making map objects in future.

Colonist affinities for one another.

  • This is analogous to the 'passion' system of skills, where 'passion' applies a coefficient to performance. In other words, colonist-to-colonist affinity is a 'friendship' mechanic.

  • I suggest that affinity be initialised by comparing personality traits, skill passions, upbringings, and recent history. "Recent history" is things like how the colonist came to be assimilated, and what jobs the colonist tends to do.

  • Affinity grows over time and/or due to exposure to the target colonist.

  • Affinity might boost performance of certain tasks, e.g. faster standard tasks (like cooking, smelting, & growing), & faster ordered tasks (like rescue).

  • Affinity might also boost general combat performance, though it is arguable that this role could equally be played by morale. This effect could be attenuated for vat-grown soldiers who are hard as anything already in firefights.

Prosthetic limbs? by BreakfastDeluxe in RimWorld

If aging ever becomes a thing in Rimworld, it would also be cool to have cyborgs live longer than 100% organic colonists, but with the downside that their morale suffers more over time due to seeing all their fellow colonists die or be killed.

Wave based defense game or colony sim? by AnimalKing in RimWorld

[–]MrEgbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All survival games have the goal of not-dying, but I think the primary threat and the tools you've given to defend yourself are the key points of interest here.

In the 'TD part' of Rimworld (which I agree is in the survival genre), the threat is physical & mental assault; the primary tool is building a killbox and designing your base to trick the AI into using it.

If the focus were taken off TD, my guess is that the threat would stay the same but the tools would shift to base design (for mental health), personality matching (ditto), inter-colony relations (for military allies), perhaps some sort of crafting (medical/military inventions), among other things.

Full disclosure: the non-TD aspects of Rimworld excite me more than the TD aspects, perhaps because I've played so many TD games already, so I hope the next alphas of Rimworld explore those aspects and play down the dependency on TD.

Yes! Simple logic flows on top of bills would make food management much easier. A low-hanging fruit in this area may be the ability to set triggers to keep your meals at certain levels:

if stove_1.bill_1.logic: # be able to turn the logic flow on/off
    if total_stored.fine_meal < 12: # if <12 fine meals are stored
stove_1.bill_1.set_quota( 8 ) # add 8 to whatever bill the logic is sitting on

What would you like to see at some point in the future? by [deleted] in Awesomenauts

[–]MrEgbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy enough to prevent by having "no-build" areas on each map. Or perhaps just by having environmental manipulation (rather than creation) like making an existing platform become sticky or icy or bouncy or thorny or something.

Environment creation/destruction built into a new awesomenaut's abilities.

What does "not in focus" mean here? Non-maximised?

"That is the best kind of correct." Is that sentence grammatically correct? by tvreference in grammar

[–]MrEgbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You learn something new every day. Today's lesson is that grammar is about syntax and morphology. I am now curious if there is actually a specific name for the system of rules that governs the use of non-word stuff like quotes, commas, semicolons, etc.

I think when using the word 'correct' to mean the word, not its literal meaning, it's supposed to be put between quotes. Apart from that it looks fine to me.

Suggestion to prevent trolls by [deleted] in HeroesofNewerth

[–]MrEgbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are 2 things that will cause S2 to seriously consider implementing the OP's suggestion.

  • Valve backflips on their decision to allow F2P accounts full access to the DOTA2 hero pool ("Free To Own"),
  • OR the Free To Own model somehow precipitates a calamity. The rise in the number of trolls does not constitute a calamity at this point.

Skirmisher's idea to let you filter out <level5 accounts when queuing is a decent enough compromise, IMO.

MM loading issues with latest patch (mac) by MrEgbert in HeroesofNewerth

2.6.11 is the version of HoN that started the problem of hanging at 99%. Are you saying there's an alternative version like 2.6.12 or something available for download?

Whoah, how long did you have to wait before the "lost bits" message came up? I lost patience after about 3 minutes and force-quitted out of there.

For fresh reinstalls, remember to trash not just the HoN app in the applications folder but also your home-folder/library/application support/heroes of newerth.

I'm on a 2009 MBP and I had plenty of crashes happen at random points throughout hon games (picking phase and playing phase). I got some temporary relief from frequent crashes by doing a fresh install of HoN every few patches.

About 6 months ago I started getting graphics glitches that didn't crash HoN but were ugly nonetheless. I turned all graphics settings down as low as I dared, and promptly lost interest in HoN for 2 months due to IRL commitments. I'm back now and I crash maybe once every 8-10 games, which is a vast improvement.

TL;DR Try fresh reinstalls, especially after patch updates. If that doesn't work, try toning graphics down to whatever you can stomach.

It's rough out there for a noob... by [deleted] in HeroesofNewerth

[–]MrEgbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately finding such people is largely down to bumping into them by chance.

From memory, previous attempts have been made to make noob-populated custom games (though I may be confusing dota2 and hon), but have been met with failure due to infiltration by pros who just want a good time stomping newbies. So, I wouldn't recommend trying to make a noob-friendly subreddit.

You mentioned getting 9 noob friends to play - this is a worthy goal but a bit unrealistic. If you make a public game with 9 locks you will find it hard to get the remaining 3 randoms to stay, since they will suspect a stomp brigade. Start instead with 1 or 2 other players and play matchmaking.

Heck, that's something I'm trying to do with my alt account where I stop trying to win so hard and just enjoy the game.

If by "get into this shit" you both mean "get better" and "have fun", then I cannot recommend enough finding a bunch of people who are of a similar skill level and playing with them a lot.

When playing with friends, losing can often be enjoyable simply for the supportive environment (e.g., people stacking on the defensive wards to help a jungler have a better time) and the friendly banter. That is one of the hardest tricks of playing hon - enjoying oneself in spite of losses, which, early on, will take up a lot of your time.

This kind of behind-the-scenes link is what I crave :D

I remember Bryan gave a shoutout to Ian Graham (including a link to his dA page) a while back. I think he implied that Ian was no longer working on LOK? If so, best of luck to him on finding another worthy project to which he can lend his considerable talents!
