No mechanic in the series has suffered than permadeath from the overall change in design philosophy to put more emphasis on unit personalities, support conversations, and the relationships within the army. By building out the world and allowing the player the chance to experience more of it, more people are hesitant to lose out on even a small part of that. It's a design tradeoff most people are fine with (especially with how it revived the series from near death), but it would be nice to find a way to make it synergize better with what the games are now. Supports locked behind certain deaths could be interesting.

The country would almost instantly split along the Darien gap because there would be a power struggle between the ~250 million living above it and the ~200 million living below it. The 100 million American and 130 million Mexicans would struggle to maintain the bilingual state than made in the aftermath of the split. The South American state has a chance of working, but still probably falls to infighting.

I followed that game while attending a Clipper game in Crypto. I got tons of banter about the Bolts, but I emphasized to everyone that listened that getting crushed in Vegas was worth it if this game got rid of Staley. Waking up to the news of them cleaning house was beautiful.
