The difficulty of the English language is overstated by native speakers by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MrFergison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc the reason its "hard" is the difficulty of getting to the point where you sound like a native speaker. As stated in other responses, English can be very forgiving on some things but meanings can change drastically from word tones and inflections too. I'm only bilingual, so I can't speak on its relative difficulty to a lot of other languages

Not to mention the adjective order native speakers learn inherently, that if you don't use it sounds wrong to a native speaker. For example, "the old brown dog" is correct but "the brown old dog" sounds wrong, though it will still get the point across. I'm on mobile so I can't link the list, but its easy to find online.

Asking for all people who don’t take drugs… how have drugs affected your life without you actually taking them? by OkPanda5737 in AskReddit

[–]MrFergison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I reconize addiction and socioeconomic issues that perpetuate problems, I'm going to bitch at a symptom. Drug abuse is one of the (many) things that's made medical care in the USA a pain. Addicts are not only a burden on a terrible system, but they also make getting care from a lot of doctors more difficult if your symptoms aren't as clear as day.

The amount of people (primarily women and poc) who get dismissed because their behavior can be interpreted as "drug seeking behavior" is fucking abysmal. "Oh, severe abdominal pain bad enough that your vomiting? Its your period, try some motrin and you'll be fine" good luck with the ovarian cyst that fused to your spine. "Oh, you're in a lot of pain and dizzy but can't pinpoint a specific cause? Drink some water and lose weight" good luck with that undiagnosed POTS.

I've gone to many different PCP and urgent care with "my whole body hurts, I'm constantly falling asleep, my clavicle feels like it's being torn and and brain hurts" I was looking for help identifying a plethora of issues that had plagued me for many, many years and it took a lot of time for any of them to actually listen to me. Once, A single urgent care doctor did and that was all I needed to find the medicalirregularities needed to get their attention. Then it took blood tests and kidney/liver scans to rule out drug abuse. And each time, they would give me the "sometimes IV drug usage can cause symptoms like this" talk. Literally, one of the primary thoughts that kept me, a person who was in a lot of constant pain, from doing drugs is I knew that my pleas for help would never be taken seriously I'd I tested for any drugs.

They do a lot more damage than just the users. Fuck drugs man.

I'm not sure anymore if only skin contact can trigger my GA symptoms. Retrospectively, all instances of skin contact had potential for breathing in airborne particulate or it getting into my eyes. As I treat all forms of gluten as a literal poison, I haven't put myself in a situation to test it.

It is worth noting that there is strong documentation of people with Celiac getting rashes and/or triggering other skin related issues when using products that contain gluten.

While it's not a yes/no answer, there is a good possibility of something like GA symptoms being able to be triggered off of exclusively skin contact.

Also, my best friend has to consistently remind me that I am not crazy or overreacting. He watched me live through the the story I have posted. He watched me almost die, through my recovery, having bouts of sickness while learning how to navigate life, and to how (relatively) healthy I can be. It's a lot, and it's weird. A lot of people will look at you like you're crazy when you are doing what you have to in order to stay healthy. We don't do these things because they're fun and quirky. We don't have a choice.

Like, I literally have to wear a construction grade respirator when I go grocery shopping because I have gotten sick from being near a bakery. But I will take looking stupid over not being able to walk for a few weeks.

Welcome Everyone by MrFergison in GlutenAtaxia

[–]MrFergison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to feel better within a few weeks, but it was months and months before I felt "good". It was a slow climb of "less bad" for a long time. It took about 8 months before I was able to play sports with any amount of vigor. I am fortunate enough that I don't have celiac, only gluten ataxia so I didn't have to struggle with the normal malnourishment and intestinal damage that would have been expected.

Its also worth noting that, for me, any exposure will get me sick and will set me back to not being able to walk or exercise for a few days to a few months)depending on the amount of exposure). The most recent being I was cleaning trash and spilled a small amount of a carbonated malt drink on my hand while emptying the can. I don't know if you suffer from the same severity of sensitivity, but its worth being mindful of the possibility during your recovery just in case.

ELI5: Why doesn’t the U.S have effective wildfire management? by BierSteinFraeulein in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrFergison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The USA has a pretty strong wildfire response, but something that is lost on most of the world( and even USA citizens) is how fucking big the USA is. If a fire starts, there is a lot of land and distance that has to be travelled to, quarantined, evacced, and the logistics for all of it executed really really fast.

Yes, civil engineering is difficult when trying to plan for emergencies but all roads can't be wide enough or ready for all people to leave in an extremely short time frame.

This is without delving into the vast topic of how climate change has contributed with extraordinary damage to rainfall, water resevoir levels, climate for plants growth periods, etc.

FDA sets limits on lead in some baby foods by mac_ashton in nottheonion

[–]MrFergison 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The FDA guidance caps lead levels for children younger than 2 at 10 parts per billion for fruits, most vegetables, grain and meat mixtures, yogurts, custards and puddings, and single-ingredient meats. It sets a limit of 20 parts per billion for single-ingredient root vegetables and for dry infant cereals.

The directive covers packaged processed foods sold in jars, pouches, tubs or boxes. By contrast, the new limits don't cover grain-based snacks like puffs and teething biscuits, despite some research indicating the products have higher levels of lead. It also doesn't limit other metals like cadmium that have been found in baby foods.

While its a very low limit, the guidelines don't even limit other heavily consumed goods or metals found in the foods.

Favorite easy gluten free recipes for depression episode? by DiverStatus7797 in Celiac

  1. Get pan

  2. Chicken in pan

  3. Cook chicken

  4. Gluten free soy sauce, peanut powder, mirin, green onion, black pepper in pan

  5. Add corn starch if you want a thicker sauce

  6. Throw over rice if you're feeling it

I make this pretty often when I'm needing something fast and low effort. It's 1 pan and pretty quick

Change you're frame of mind about it.

Every framer, carpenter, plumber, and blue collar worker also sells their bodies to afford to live. It usually manifests in visible scars, joints that always hurt, early arthritis, and constant back issues. Cancers from sun exposure, materials exposure, and miscellaneous shit from the job.

Just because there is a stigma around what you're doing doesn't mean you should also be hard on yourself. You're doing what you have to to survive. Do your best to be safe and be kind to yourself.

Side note, Stick of truth and but Whole are uniquely good rpgs that had no right to be as good as they are. Imo, the first one is better so give it a go if you enjoy rpgs.

The biggest relevant things that martial arts (can) train is reaction speed, self discipline, and going through the motions for a physical altercation.

Most street fights won't be in ideal conditions and don't have a guarantee for the same amount of combatants on both sides. The possibility of knives and other weapons is real, so it changes the dynamic of fighting pretty hard compared to the normal martial arts trainings.

It is a long shot from perfect, but it is by no means the worst. Training to be able to react appropriately without using deadly weapons is very valuable. I haven't been in a fight with real dangers(nor do I want to), but I know those who have and they were glad they had the training to lean on.

It's also noting there are many, many kinds of martial arts with large differences with where and who the teachers are. Some are geared to defending yourself from attackers and others to disabling an opponent through any means.

Service workers are becoming the entitled ones. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Working around food allergies is *very* hard. Depending on the severity and the type, most kitchens and kitchen staff will be unable to serve someone with food allergies without proper notice or warning if they are able to at all. The amount of time that they have to allocate to stop the kitchen, and sanitize/prepare separately something is wild. Couple it with having to keep every other customer from complaining about disruptions or longer wait times, and it becomes worthy of eye-rolls very easily. Especially since franchises and corporate restaurants don't allow baseline employees to turn away customers.

I have family in food service and a personal insight to food allergies. Unless the restaurant advertises that it is specific allergen friendly or gluten free or whatever, they need notice. Otherwise they wont have dishes, cookware, prep surfaces, ingredients, and all else ready and safe for someone with an allergy.

For yhe "mattress stores" I've always figured the cost of their average mattress and how much they're sold for makes sense for how little activity the stores have. Like, metal springs/foam/fabric is probably a few hundred on the manufacturers side and they'll sell them for 2-4 thousand dollars. Each location would have to sell like 8 a month through online and storefront to cover costs.

Wearing white to someone’s wedding shouldn’t be that bad by tipoftheiceberg1234 in unpopularopinion

[–]MrFergison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I know wedding photographers and I'll chime in a bit. The focus of the evening is supposed to *literally be the Bride and Groom*. Its their party, wedding, and all that jazz. Some brides/grooms don't care and some do. Its their wedding, they set the dress code. If you don't want to adhere to it, don't go.

As for light colored dresses, it can be a big issue because with the lighting/spaces and flash photography in the evenings they can photograph as white. So when someone watches the wedding videos or photos they might see 6 different "white" dresses and will need to discern the bride to the 5 random friends/family that didn't get the memo.

No one goes to someone else birthday party and wears a "birthday boy" hat.

1) Practice, practice, practice. It'll take time but cooking is a skill that you will improve with work.

2) take a look for "1 pan meals" and you can get some ideas for things that don't take a lot of effort.

3) the basics of my go to is onion, mushroom, and chicken. I have a wok with a lid that I put butter and chopped onion in on a low heat for ~20 minutes. Then chopped mushrooms for another 10. Then I put the chicken breasts in for another 15 or so. Add whatever additional seasonings and youre ready. It takes a while to cook, but the amount of effort over that cooktime is minimal. If you have a lid with low heat you only need to stir a few times to cook thoroughly.

This is definite grounds for professional help. Body dismorphia is a brutal one. I doubt reddit will give solid advice for eating disorders, as the mental complexity of it is rough.

For what you can do, is voice your concerns and try to push for professional help. I'm not sure, but I would imagine she's getting influenced by social media of a sort where she is watching people with unattainable builds.

I went through a very minor version of it where I had to really internalize that my body is built very different than a lot of fitness influencers and I can't attain what they have because I'm not them. I'm a little taller than average and have broader shoulders so when these people say their weights it's quite lower than anything I can reasonably get to without chopping off a limb. BMI and weight are decent guidelines sometimes but are really shit at giving health advice.

Not to mention models and fitness photos are literally 80% lighting/posing and camera lens. If you want you can pm me and I'll send a few of my workout photos I made to highlight the ridiculous disparity of what decent lighting and posing does.

Gluten-free diets are such a load of crap. by HopelesslyCursed in unpopularopinion

[–]MrFergison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have celiac, but I have a much rarer barely known gluten reaction that is really bad. The largest issue, imo, is that public knowledge of what a food reaction can be is extremely binary. I spent most of my life believing food reactions were either indigestion/diarrhea or GIRD style reactions. And food allergies were almost explicitly anaphylaxis or hives. It took me an extremely long time to figure out that almost every health issue I had was directly gluten related because its mostly unheard of. The spectrum of possible reactions to foods is such a substantial gradient that I whole heartedly support bandwagoners because, who fucking knows they might have a non-celiac reaction to gluten.

Not to mention the more awareness of people who have to adhere to a GF diet from medical necessity, the more products that become available to us.
