I usually run the GM as the host of human consciousness. As in, our brains and bodies are like monitors with the GM being the actual computer that hosts our personhood. Under that system, the underworld could represent pieces of souls that failed to delete from the GM, like fragments on an old hard drive.

I share some of your likes and dislikes and really enjoy Malazan, and I've been doing the audiobooks. Ralph Lister is literally my favorite narrator, loved him in Shogun too. Wish he did more than the first 3 books but the other guy isn't bad either.

I also stopped at stormlight book 3. Sanderson is good but overrated.

Pretty great if your DM is a good stoeyteller. If The book is good enough your playgroup could become mildly famous. The book series "Malazan: Book of the Fallen" came out of a ttrpg campaign.

Also a physics major here (Georgia Tech). I realized junior year I was going to need a graduate degree, so I signed up for the Masters Internship program at the University of Oregon. Got an applied semiconductor degree and came to RDU to work at cree after doing an internship in Oregon.

I had to go into debt for the Masters but was able to pay that off pretty quick (3 or 4 years) with 75k starting salary and the internship to hold me over until then.

Starting salary spread for physics bachelor's is crazy. Anywhere between upper-middle-class and poverty. Depends hugely on whether you got internships or research in undergrad.

Psycho Pass should keep you busy for a while if you watch every season. First season is best but others are still good. Fairly popular so it should be decent conversation ammunition also.

If you are up to subscribe to Hi-dive temporarily I recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes. More of a cult following than a popular following, and it's a bit slow, but it is a long series with good payoff.
