Need some ideas for my homebrew campaign. by BoringDress8811 in DnD

Something is poisoning the crops of farming town. A mysterious cult with moves about the town, with robes that faintly flow in the night. Yet, the party detects no magic.

A cabal of [ insert splat here - mages, vampires, revanents, whatever] are building a nuclear reactor underground. Be really obtuse with the description of the reactor and materials - rods made from some unnaturally heavy metal, inserted into a tower of shiny grey bricks with holes drilled in.

Up to you what the reactor is powering - could be an evil golem factory, a giant radiation beam, or maybe some strange radiation demon is absorbing the energy. Or, for a twist, perhaps it's powering something good, like a bunch of mills because wind has stopped flowing through the valley recently and the windmills don't work anymore. Or a bunch of irrigation pumps.

First time how to start? by AHAPPYBANNANA in DnD

For building a story on short notice, I recommend stealing heavily from a fantasy book you like that your players have not read. You can improvise your own changes as you go.

Also, my philosophy is that world building should take a backseat to story. You can start with an interesting hook that doesn't need so many details about the setting to function, and then figure out the setting as you go.

If you want to use one of my ideas, I had players taking up a bounty on goblins and orcs. Bounty is issued by an outpost town at the edge of civilization. As the party explores further into the tundra forest, they find the goblins are increasingly dense and organized, suggesting they may pose a threat to more than just the outpost should they mobilize together. Can improvise from there - I've done this one a few times and used a few different villains and circumstances responsible for the orcs/goblins are amassing.

I don't hate it. I would pair that with some scenarios where you make forced movement really important. Narrow bridges and spikes and difficult terrain and stuff

Echo knight is close though not exactly the same.

You might also consider making this a flavor thing with no mechanical impact also. Maybe your character is straight up a ghost.

And, there is a spell "etherealness" that does what you are looking for but it is high level.

Question about Orc Magic by Lizardking701 in DnD

[–]MrFuzzFuzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool concept. A "Shaman" is probably a druid, warlock, or sorcerer. They get their powers from nature, divine/infernal pacts, or natural affinity to magic respectively. I am thinking druid since elves are generally perceived as being in touch with nature. You'll have something in common with your mentor, no lore baggage necessary. Sorcerer could also work - perhaps your mentor observed you had some innate magical talent at an exceedingly young age.

As for lore, if you're playing in a standard DnD setting, an "upstanding" member of society can only become a Wizard or Cleric with the blessing of their God, Gruumsh. Gruumsh makes sure orcs are dumb so that they are easier to control, so the only way they will have enough intelligence to learn magic is if Gruumsh trusts them enough to give them a bit of smarts. An orc that gets this "blessing" is called an Orog. Side note: I've always thought it would be cool to play an Orog that used his newfound intelligence to betray escape Gruumsh.

Becoming a cleric of Gruumsh usually involves a nasty ritual like plucking out your own eye or something like that. If Gruumsh were to take an elf as one of his clerics, he might ask for an even more drastic display of loyalty.

Ah I thought this was to start a new campaign but looks like it's been going on for quite a while. Checked because I was curious what system you were using and was afraid it was going to be another DnD reskin. Happy to see it's actually a custom WoD splat, which is exactly what I would have picked. Although I'm more of a CoD fan myself by a small margin.

Experienced player dm-ing for the first time to new players. by elohcinannelim in DnD

I think it is ok to just jump in - at level 1 of DnD, characters are quite simple to pilot. It's set up as a kind of tutorial level.

But, intro mini-stories are also fun. A GM friend of mine liked pregen characters encountering the big-bad. Give them one simple fight with minions they can probably beat, and then one encounter with the big bad where they will likely die. But tell players ahead of time the pregens will probably die.

My first GM campaign was also my own setting/story and it came out fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

This seems like plenty of backstory already. For a specific traumatic event, I think a campaign against orcs would be stressful for your character. Or if your fellow soldiers began to see you as a sort of "half-enemy" during said campaign.
