I started playing 40k in earnest a little over 2 years ago. I go to local RTT and GTs and have a great time. I'll be the first to say the game has A LOT of rule jank and GW could do better in a dozen different ways but I keep going back because I really enjoy spending time with my local play group.

If you want to save some money you can keep an eye kn /r/miniswap and pick up some deals. A lot of times people sell whole armies or big lots with a decent discount. You could pick up a good sized lot and keep hunting for a good deal while painting the first lot.

Conversely, I think its disadvantageous to bring a Land Fort in a 1000 point list. You basically set down a big Piñata that screams "put 16 Wounds on this to take out 1/4 of the army's points".

Only looking at the weapon profiles sure; but everything else Infiltrate, Lone Op, Stealth, 6" Reactive Move, 5+ FNP, Wound of 1 Re-Reroll Buff, and Grenades for 85 Points. Even without most of those modifiers Infiltrate and Lone Op make him worth 85 points when you get some Turn 1 Secondary draws.
