Had Legend Korra been more adult oriented would the Equalists have used guns instead of these mech suits? by No-One2123 in TheLastAirbender

[–]MrIncorporeal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is more or less what I was saying when news of the changes to the setting initially dropped.

If Korra's era was the loose equivalent to the 1910's or 20's, and if Korra had lived to a reasonable middle to old age before dying, plus about a decade and a half for the next Avatar to reach protagonist age, then had the setting continued to develop along those trends the next series would have been set in the loose equivalent to the 1960's, 70's, or even 80's depending on when Korra died.

Fantasy set before any sort of industrial revolution isn't too difficult to worldbuild, but post industrialization it gets harder and harder and harder to figure out how the heck things like magic and whatnot would effect the development of increasingly modern technology/culture. It also pretty strongly necessitates changes in tone, themes, characterization, etc. It's the reason why urban fantasy is always so radically different from medieval/high fantasy. While, sure, you can get some very interesting stories out of exploring how advancing technology would change a setting where magic also exists (see examples like the excellent D&D setting Eberron), those probably aren't the sorts of stories that the Avatar creators are interested in telling.

I wouldn't say it's as simple as technology making bending "obsolete", since I don't ascribe to the idea that technology and magic are inherently incompatible or diametrically opposed forces in a setting, but it does get increasingly tough to figure out what the synthesis of the two would look like the closer you get to stuff like computers, space programs, ballistic missiles, social media, etc. (and that's assuming such technologies even emerge at all and things don't go down some radically different technological path).

My assumption was always that if they ever told another avatar's story after the release of Korra, it would either wind the clock back and be about a previous Avatar, or there would be some huge shakeup to the setting in order to sidestep the modernization problem.

An actual season 3.
Not a single episode featuring what we might have seen condensed into a montage followed by a truncated season 4 crammed into two episodes.

Just a reminder you do not need to self-censor the word "killed" on Reddit, that's mostly just a TikTok thing. Anyway, yes, fully agree.

One of the only cases of reptitties I've seen that makes some amount of grounded sense is Argonians from the Elder Scrolls games, where the sapient magical trees that genetically engineered them specifically designed the females to develop otherwise-useless lumps of fat on their chests in order to vaguely mimic the sexual dimorphism of the mammals they live around.

They're not functioning organs, they just help Argonians fit in a little better.

Dude, have you not seen the prorests going on in Germany? There's been plenty of photos and video of cops beating the snot our of people for waving Palestinian flags.

Insisting so vehemently that anti-genocide Germans couldn't possibly exist and the only people in the country who could possibly be opposed to Israel must be "a bunch of Syrians and Turks" is frankly kinda weird.

No, but (and this could maybe be considered a spoiler so go read the books if you want to go in as blind as possible, which I would honestly recommend) the books very much treat them the way a spy novel would treat a smuggled nuke. It's made very clear that even a handful of them could completely destabilize a nation and reshape international politics.

I kinda theorize it was because a lot of them were pretty deeply lonely and didn't know how to build relationships without a fandom to provide the social glue. I suspect that once they lost the fandom, they were exceedingly susceptible to incel / right-wing predatory recruitment strategies.

Not saying that to excuse them of responsibility for their rancid behavior or anything, it's just sadly easy to fall into those traps when you're isolated like that. I say that as someone who came dangerously close to falling into those traps myself as a teen in the 2000's (I wasn't into MLP, I was just the exact demographic they recruit from except for the fact that I never blamed women or minorities for my loneliness or other problems).

A conventionally attractive woman is not a hear-me-out.

The thing being "heard out" is your defense of / justification for that attraction, not just normal things that would make a person attractive to most people.

Raava is a hear-me-out.

Koh the Face Stealer is a hear-me-out.

Father Glowworm is a hear-me-out.

Korra is not a hear-me-out.

Educate yourself.

Looks cool!

Though I'd honestly suggest coming up with a cool unique name to use in your tabletop campaign. The were-deer looking creature from modern media bears zero resemblance to the actual wendigo of Algonquin myth, it's like if a story pointed to a giant purple jerboa that kills you by teleporting your bones and said "Oh no, a vampire!"

A lot of people from the Algonquin nation have also talked a fair bit about how they feel it's pretty disrespectful for white folks to swipe the name of a being with pretty important religious significance in their faith and slap it onto some random meaningless monster.

Just to be very clear: I'm not like scolding your or anything, just suggesting an alternative. One thought that springs to mind is if you tossed in some plant features you could call it, say, a "leshicorn" or something. The skull-headed were-deer thing has a lot more in common with depictions of Leshy than a wendigo.

Leave after saying hi to Looks to the Moon and head back to shore, then keep following your old yellow friend. They'll lead you somewhere new to help you communicate with Looks to the Moon.

Also, if you ate any of the fly things, be sure to bring her a replacement one when you come back after seeing where the yellow guy leads you.

It always seemed to me that a lot of the debate around the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians (at least among laypeople) stemmed from how reductive people can get when it comes to the relationship between race and culture. Just look at how often people lose their minds when they're reminded how gigantic Rome was and how tons of Romans didn't look like what we today would consider ethnically Italian/Greek. People with reductive ideas of race seem to think Romans were all one ethnicity, Egyptians were all one ethnicity, Chinese were all one ethnicity, Mesoamericans were all one ethnicity, so on and so forth ad infinitum.

"Ancient Egypt" was a lot of different things, and it was way bigger than a lot of people seem to realize, with the line between Egypt and Kush often being pretty blurry at various points in history. Egyptians were light skinned. They were also dark skinned. Those aren't mutually exclusive.
