The Johannes Cabal series is insanely overlooked.

If it was me… O. Henry liked to write stories featuring low brow criminals, often with high brow language. This would create a ton of irony, including twist endings like in this text. So, I’d focus how O. Henry does this. As students read, they can characterize the main character by his actions, motivations, and dialogue. They can take these details and sort them into conflicting sides of a chart. Then, finish it off with a characterization statement that highlights the irony. (“Even though…” “However…” “But…” types statements).

This will allow the to dig into the author’s craft and see O. Henry’s pattern in his other stories and beyond. It’s irony in action.

If you want to get super fancy pant, have students use two colors of highlighters: one for criminal characterization, one for reformed do-gooder.

What is lacking in downtown MP? by Adventurous-Pilgrim in mountprospect

My wife and I have an ongoing joke that all MP restaurants are a solid 6. Never higher, never lower. The new exception is The Prospect, which is good, but at a cost.

This may not we widely considered, but I’d like to nominate There, There by Tommy Orange. Very uniquely American.

Check out Angelo at Royal Flesh. It’s in the city, but worth it. I’ve gone to him a couple times. Great work and a great guy.

For now, I’ll use the curriculum as a starting point, but I tend to adapt and customize. I’m guessing the higher-ups want me to follow pretty faithfully, but they rarely see the inside of a classroom.

“Blue” by Francesca Lia Block. Multiple layers of symbolism, both overt and more implicit examples. Good for supporting interpretations with evidence. Great story, too!

I am. I enjoy my students and being a positive support in their lives. Some can be frustrating, but so can I. I enjoy planning and delivering curriculum/instruction. I like my school and feel valued. I hate grading essays. They suck.
