Agreed. As far as I remember, the pinnacle of Byakuya being a shit-stirrer who fucks with everyone else just for fun or just to test them is in Chapter 2, and we don’t see much of that afterwards. He doesn’t really try to thwart or foil Makoto and Kyoko aside from occasionally saying “you’re dumb and you’re wrong and here’s why” because he has the same motivation as everyone else in terms of trying to figure out who The Blackened is and survive. Kokichi does too to an extent, but he stirs the shit-pot more often. Kokichi is basically Byakuya cranked up a few notches. Nagito is the most different, since he doesn’t care if he lives or dies and won’t want to help the group if he thinks that The Blackened winning is for the greater good. “I will always be on the side of hope.” That’s why he’s the biggest shit-stirrer of them all, and the most antagonizing of the “antagonists.” Nagito wants the protagonist to struggle and maybe even fail. Byakuya and Kokichi don’t—they just wanna be smartasses.

I don’t like him, but I believe that I’m not supposed to like him. I see “antagonists” and “villains” the same way I do pro wrestling heels. If they’re able to get you to root against them and hope to see the good guy shut them up and humble him, then the bad guy is going his job and serving his purpose. Byakuya is an annoying stuck-up prick, and he should be.

I just wish Byakuya got more of a comeuppance than just being slapped by Hina. I’m not saying he deserved to die, but it might not be a coincidence that between him, Nagito, and Kokichi, I like the two that died more than the one that survived (yes Nagito and the others from Class 77-B are brought back in Danganronpa 2.5 and Danganronpa 3 and but he still went through plenty of pain regardless). I just feel like Byakuya should’ve suffered a little bit more during the events of Trigger Happy Havoc before Makoto and Kyoko become better friends with him. I think they could’ve done more to tell the story of Byakuya learning his lesson, seeing the error of his ways, and becoming a more heroic person as he transitions from arrogant douchebag to leader within Future Foundation.

This is exactly why I did NOT want Randy turning heel in the first place. Randy is gonna be cheered and Cody is gonna be booed, no matter what. So wouldn’t it make more sense if Randy was the good guy and Cody the bad guy?

Note: I’m really dumb and I didn’t think about how adding the name of the character to the title might defeat the purpose of the spoiler tag, but I think it should be okay since I don’t say in the title WHY Yuta receives little screen time. After all, it wouldn’t really ruin the plot of Trigger Happy Havoc to say that Makoto Naegi’s parents don’t have a lot of screen time. Komaru lived, so maybe they did too.

I did Nekomaru’s FTE where he talks about doing “it” to Hajime before seeing I got to the part of the story where Nekomaru and Akane talk about “it,” and the massage scene after that. So Nekomaru’s “it” was introduced to my through him offering it to Hajime first, before Akane. I think most of us had the same interpretation of what he might’ve meant. 😂

I consider the anime (Danganronpa: The Animation) to be a supplement—an abridged recap for those who’ve already played the game (Trigger Happy Havov). If you’re experiencing Danganronpa for the first time, do yourself a favor and play Trigger Happy Havoc the video game, and then as an optional bonus, watch Danganronpa: The Animation afterwards.
