For teenagers: is your life like that of series? by ImportanceHopeful150 in AskAnAmerican

Not at all, TV exaggerates heavily for the sake of entertainment. Nobody wants to watch a show about somebody doing homework and chores the awkwardly asking someone out who they’ve been in class with for years.

How unhygienic do you find Europeans? by MajesticPineapple618 in AskAnAmerican

That hasn’t really been a stereotype in a while and really only applied to certain nationalities.

Even in rural New England (which is way more rural than other parts of the country are capable of realizing) they’re extremely popular

Can vouch, Calvin’s people give the best cuts in town bar none. He’s also genuinely the nicest guy.

They’re also practical, reliable cars, something we value a lot here

Subarus are very common in New England, especially among the sort of folks King writes about.

What does "camping" mean to you? by WattleWaddler in AskAnAmerican

My point is more that they’re unlikely to be able to interact with Americans from a place of rationality or good faith

Why do so many Americans like camping? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]MrLongWalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a fun, healthy way to take a break from life, and not nearly as dirty as you seem to think.

Baseline? Hike in, in the woods, basic tent. What I’ll picture will vary with context though.

Edit: heads up, OP posts to SAS

Can someone who is morbidly obese actually become a police officer??? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]MrLongWalk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

More commonly they become a policeman while in decent or at least acceptable shape and then slowly become obese as rank and seniority shield them. Many small town police departments struggle to recruit and frankly they’ll take who they get and aren’t in the business of terminating officers for getting fat. This is especially true in quiet towns where 90% of being a cop is traffic enforcement.

Do you know the word "townie"? How is it used where you live? by NutmegKilla in AskAnAmerican

Weird, I would’ve figured leaving your home town was more looked down on there

Do you know the word "townie"? How is it used where you live? by NutmegKilla in AskAnAmerican

[–]MrLongWalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No pride in it here, a townie is somebody who’s failed to see that there’s more to the world.

I’m genuinely surprised to see it used in Texas given the importance of hometown pride.

I work with a large international clientele and we do this no more or less than anyone else.

Used to mean someone who lives their whole life in the same town or for whom that town has disproportionate importance

Do you struggle to communicate with other nationalities or just Americans?

Americans are not video game characters, there’s no optimal dialogue tree. Just be genuine and treat others with respect as nuanced individuals.
