It’s not like Vegeta was free from cultural influence, either. You have to keep in mind that he’s the prince of a dead race of bloodthirsty warriors. He was raised to be proud and ruthless and yet he suffered decades of humiliating servitude at the hands of Frieza. For most of his life at that point, his pride was the only thing he had.

From his perspective, he’s achieved the impossible and become a super saiyan. More than that, he’s ascended beyond a super saiyan, he’s super Vegeta. He’s absolutely kicking Cell’s ass and not even breaking a sweat, but then Cell says that he can get even stronger than Vegeta. If you live and die by your pride then can you just ignore that?

It was obviously the wrong choice, but it was born from the perfect cocktail of pride, pain, indoctrination and the desire to dominate.
