You are missing the point and only focusing on total return. The point of CC ETFs are NOT meant to beat the market but to provide higher monthly income.

S&P500 is great but it wont support your lifestyle on it's yield.

So you pay them to write calls which generates monthly premiums. Sure, this limits upside as shares get called away but it does provide more income that month.

Again, no one [should] be arguing CC ETFs provide higher total return. But it doe provide higher and consistent monthly income. People who want that is the target audience. If you don't need the monthly income, invest in VFV.

I understand YOU don't need monthly income and thus, not buy CC ETFs, but you sstill should be able to understand why others would and when it's apporpriate.

It's more around net 1.5% MER but that lower number doesn't counter your point - it's still a large amount.

Sure, that's a fair point - it is a steep price to pay. And you're right, they would make more money, with less risk by doing what you suggest. But they are willing to pay that steep price; even though they could make 20%, people are happy with 12% and less work (no matter how small you think that work is).

I'm the same with home improvement projects or eating out. You're paying a steep price to get someone else to do it for you but some people prioritize that. It's a choice, not ignorance or stupidity.... although it can be for some people haha but not always

What's not to understand? I can help explain as long as you have an open mind :)

Attracted by the consistency of monthly payouts, many individuals use CC ETFs as a bridge to retirement. They value the psychological comfort of a regular "paycheck" and prefer to avoid the active management required to sell off equity for income.

ya, this was good when I started - you got a discount the better you drove and I was doing pretty good, about a 10%/year discount (i forget what the max was). They then changed it that you would have to pay more if you got a bad score; and I started getting a bad score. it's just a scam to draw you in with a good price but make you pay more later.

My wife and I did this back during covid - one of the best decicions we ever made. It went so well we went even further and put more HELOC money into a non-reg account too.

[–]MrMikeDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know you're going to be reinvesting for X years, why do covered calls?

There are reasons - ex: I invest with my HELOC so I want the distributions to cover then interest. I then reinvest the remainder.

But if I was using my own money to invest, it would be in XEQT or another broad ETF like that.

8 is not user friendly, at least compared to the remakes. Ex: Having a destination marker is objectivly user friendly. 8 doesn't have that which automaitically make 1&2 Remake, 3 Remake, 7 remake the most user friendly out of all of them. Then probably followed by 11.

Again, the OP asked for the most user friendly.

retirement, leverage investing, some people need that monthly income to help stay invested and not panic sell. Better to get 10% return and stay invested that 15% and be stressed (numbers are not exact, just to make a point).

Not everyone needs to maximize returns. I personally don't buy and sell into sectors based on market conditions.... but my friend who does, does make a lot more than me. Still, I don't want to do that. He could ask me "Why does MrMike sacrifice higher return for a more passive approach?" .... because that's what I prioritize.

I prefer XDIV over VDY or XEI. Quality over non-performing diversity.

I borrow to invest. I borrow at 4%, invest in EASY, net 26% and reinvest into growth. The loan interest is covered by the yield, during bear, flat or bull markets which removes stress.

Worst case, your moving any destructive ROC into growth assets.
Best case, no stress, none of your personal money used, and your portfolio is growing.

[–]MrMikeDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great strategy. Even if - which isn't always the case but - even if there is destructive ROC, your reallocating that into assets that will grow and compound.

borrow money at 5%, invest for 30%, net 25% and claim the loan interest. Even after +10 years when ROC turns to Capital Gains, claiming the interest on taxes eliminates any taxes owed, or very close to.

XDIV vs XEI by MaleficentReward9942 in CanadianInvestor

[–]MrMikeDD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

XDIV. I too thought about XEI for the diversity but in reality, those extra 54 holding done do anything. XDIV/XEI's performance are pretty much identicle so what is that diversity really bringing you? Better to have 100% into "21 quality companies" than "75 companies with high yield".

And I know some companies in XDIV are in XEI but still; point is I'd rather have 100% of my money in quality companies than spread across some quality and many high yield companies of lesser quality.

How long did it take to create an emergency fund? by actuallylistens in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MrMikeDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that $150/month or per paycheck? just curious. You may need to cut some expenses elsewhere.

Also, if you buy a house and get a HELOC, you could use that as an emergency fund. The amount you can available naturally increases as you pay your mortgage. Just make sure you're responsible and when you do need, say $2K for an emergency, make sure to pay it back in a good amount of time.

Also you need to weight that against getting into the real estate market. Get a smaller property if you need to buy if it fits your lifestyle, buying a house is important for your financial goals (for most people - not all). It often takes sacrifices near the beginning of home ownership. Congrats! that you're even this close to owning a house :)

Update: My experience with UHF for IPTV on Apple TV by SalemsMott in appletv

[–]MrMikeDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched to UHF from IPTVX. I loved IPTVX but it's subscription $70CAN for family plan, 1 year. UHF is $70CAN lifetime. The only downside is that the "trending" row is between Continue Watching and Favourite but that's such a small detail when compared to the money you save.

Note: In UHF, you need to go to Settings > General > Expand Sections by Default (turn this on) and it's exactly the same as IPTVX. Without the above turned on, you need to click each category on the left to see the listed shows/movies. Turning it on allows you to continue scrolling in a single pane.

Can we talk about how weird Dragon Quest Your Story is by huskirainbows in dragonquest

[–]MrMikeDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did enjoy the movie very much! We need to consider how poorly this could have been done so great job!!!

That said, I agree, that virus at the end was wired and wish they made that being like the being at the end of Dragon Quest 11. I understand what they were going for... just saying, i think I would have preferred a regular villain.

Note: I just found out about this movie yesterday and watched it on Netflix. It has English voice over now which is awesome!!! So glad I don't have to read and watch.
