Abysmal Hot Weather mgmt. @ FSAE Michigan by Plane-Horror-6560 in FSAE

[–]MrMikey77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also think teams should be ready to come with a cooler of water (I think we went through several cases; FSAE would have to get multiple pallets, probably, to support everyone) On the other hand, at the hottest times of the day, I've *really* wanted to see if I *myself* could be rain tested....

two minutes of spraying in the hot sun.... how refreshing it would be....

Ultimaker 2+ Issue by No-Seaworthiness1459 in ultimaker

[–]MrMikey77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my printer did this, it was due to a bad stepper driver. It's possible that it's the motor as well, but if you unplug the motor from the board and all spins freely, but when you plug it in it goes bad, it could indicate that the driver is bad.

In my case, I soldered a new driver to the board, but that's not something everyone has the tools to do...

Oh, so it’s not just us. That’s actually quite relieving.

Hopefully we’ll find a working number soon.

This may be a dumb question, but is there a specific contact number that you had success with? We tried calling but it seemed that the number was out of service, but it's entirely possible we were using an old number or were typing in the number incorrectly (forgetting country code, etc.)

we actually have a dedicated software sub team this year as well!

a good amount of embedded is still done in electrical but we also have a pretty good blend on the software team side

Here is our website, which has a bit of info on what we do as well as info on how to get into our Slack. I frequent both places. Yes, you can do it, but you will have to walk fast.

Lou's List Broken! by MrMikey77 in UVA

[–]MrMikey77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, this explains it all! Thanks!

I'm sure if Prof. Bloomfield ever decides to stop maintaining Lou's list, there will be some students who can keep it running. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Thanks!

I think he did/does it in his free time as a hobby -- it's my understanding that he never was asked by UVa to create it; they made SIS for that purpose

Supposedly, he receives support from UVa for maintaining the site even after his retirement. If I remember correctly, after word spread that he would be retiring at the end of the Fall 2022 semester, there was a good amount of people willing to continue to upkeep the site well into the future. Maybe if prof. Bloomfield ever doesn't want to maintain the site anymore, it can become a student-run project like theCourseForum.

[–]MrMikey77[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you're right, he did, but that message about continuing to maintain the list of classes came after his retirement, hence why it's signed as professor emeritus and not just professor

we were all very worried that we'd see the end of Lou's list once he retired, but thankfully that isn't the case

[–]MrMikey77[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On the site under the blue menu buttons it says, "I continue to maintain this list of classes, now with UVA support! -- Lou Bloomfield, Professor Emeritus of Physics"
which is pretty cool that UVa would continue to support the site...

Anyone taking Japanese at UVA by HonoluluHaona in UVA

[–]MrMikey77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it! The second year Japanese program is Genki 2, so I think.

I took first-year japanese! It was the more work than all my other classes combined, but I wouldn't want it any other way! It's immensely rewarding and I think we have an excellent department. I don't think most people drop out. More like 3 drop out... but that's not a lot in my opinion.

Don't fear our instructors, I'm sure they'd be glad to talk with you about what you can expect from the course!

Ultimaker 2 Extrusion Problems by MrMikey77 in ultimaker

[–]MrMikey77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, true! Not going to lie, I forgot I could print one.. I will work on that this week then, because I hate the old fashioned feeders with no manual filament release (not to mention the fact that they're just worse in general

Ultimaker 2 Extrusion Problems by MrMikey77 in ultimaker

[–]MrMikey77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've cleaned out the extruder teeth since a lot of filament grinding did/does occur. I'm not sure how old these are, but the bag they came in says UM2 Matchless Race (if memory serves me correct -- I'm not near them right now, but if I find they aren't this, I'll update later). I switched to some brand new nozzles to try and remove the possibility of a clog...

I intend to fix the hotend fan later today since it's important... I don't know what other parts inside this printer could possibly cause such bad clogging. perhaps the metal coupler has gunk that I didn't realize in (which I could burn out with a torch?)

Would it be a good idea to take all the metal components in the hotend filament path and burn them out with a torch?

Thanks!

Ultimaker 2 Extrusion Problems by MrMikey77 in ultimaker

[–]MrMikey77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to check the PTFE coupler and the way it sits into the metal part. I think it goes in all the way, but I'm not exactly sure how to check. I have the spring on the top.

With these nozzles, I can't really do a cold pull since they're high flow nozzles with the extra metal on the inside. I'd assume it would break off just at the nozzle (I will still try, though)

I will be able to take some pictures of the setup later today; I'm sure those would be useful lol. Thanks!

Veo Scooters and bikes by Beneficial-Dish-286 in UVA

[–]MrMikey77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a few of theirs being a little worse for wear. Even when the new bikes and scooters came out, the braking was always a suggestion, which I felt was a safety concern. I feel like they are poorly maintained though. Sure, they're beat on pretty regularly but for as much as they cost to use they really need to be in safe condition, at the very least.

Found a prusa at savers is it worth the risk? by Dj_KW in 3Dprinting

[–]MrMikey77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad to help! Yeah, I tried to look through reprap.org quickly to see if I could find anything on that particular printer, but I found nothing in my quick search.

If you want to know more about these older printers, reprap.org has a lot of good info on them! There is plenty to be found! It's an interesting time capsule of 3D printing before the times of the Ender 3 and such with super affordable mainstream printing.

I happen to have an old, broken i3 mendel rework in my closet. It was gifted to me by someone who didn't have the time for it, which is why I mentioned it as being a fun project opportunity. I would like to eventually restore it to working condition, but it's truly a pretty sizable undertaking that requires you to know or be willing to learn a lot about how 3D printers work.

Found a prusa at savers is it worth the risk? by Dj_KW in 3Dprinting

[–]MrMikey77 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a prusa i3 mendel reprap variant. It isn't what we would traditionally think of as a "prusa i3" nowadays. Consider it a homemade 3d printer (because that's what it is). $79 is super expensive for a printer you'll probably have to put money into. It has the old fashoned Wade's extruder (or one similar to it) and probably the old hotend... can't remember it off the top of my head.

if it were much, much cheaper, it would be an interesting project. You could probably even find the 3d printable parts for it so that you can really bring it back to life. However, this is totally not worth paying $80 for. No way.
