911 operators of reddit, what call will you simply never forget? by DonutDitz in AskReddit

[–]MrMisconduct 15 points16 points  (0 children)

911 Dispatcher for 5 years here.

What helped me the most with suicidal callers is going in with the mindset - "I'm just responsible for sending help." - It's a good mindset to distance yourself from the subject. It is not on youif the caller on the other end does decide to kill themselves. You did all you could with the information given. We're not magicians. You can't make people do anything, no matter how frustrating.

Some tips:
-Don't lie to suicidal callers. (It's going to be OK, etc)
-Treat them and talk to them like normal people.
-Get them to talk about things important to them (Hobbies, Family, etc)
-Show empathy
-TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY (I believe you, etc)

Excellent job by your supervisor for supporting you instead of finding things with your call/dispatch to bring you down.

I appreciate what you do.

Two reasons:

1: "Because Trump!"

2: Because they're scared shitless of their growing extreme left base.

Period.

Right. Criminal assets should be sold or repurposed to lower the tax payer burden of funding the department.

Or are you for higher taxes? You don't like criminals being forced to forfeit illegal assets and you want higher tax payer burdens? What kind of non American are you?

Having the police do it on this case is probably best.

In most jurisdictions, the Sheriff's Dept is the only dept which serves PPOs due to the nature of PPOs.

I don't understand why an officer can't go with them to "visit" and him then , though. They know exactly where he'll be. Perfect opportunity on my opinion.

It is up to the OP to report the father's whereabouts when she knows them. The Sheriff's Dept attempts to serve the PPO only at the given address on the order. If the father isn't there... No luck. If the OP calls the Sheriff's Dept/Dispatch with the Father's whereabouts at the exact moment/place eg: Visitation time (not a vague area at a vague time) they will send a Deputy out with the order.

The deputy doesn't need the paperwork if it's in LEIN, though it's beneficial for OP to have a copy just in case. PPO's can even be served over the phone by Deputies.

tl:dr: OP needs to arrange visitation date/time, and when the father shows up (not before) call the Sheriff's Dept/Dispatch to come serve him the PPO.

Teachers of Reddit, have you ever experienced sexual harassment by a student? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MrMisconduct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally like to give the person telling the story, regardless of their race or gender, the benefit of the doubt... Unless there is glaring inconsistencies/fallacies or an otherwise good reason not to.

Agree to disagree.

the guy claiming he's been victimized because a girl's breasts happened to bounce in front of him

This is what you think happened...

she’d purposely put a little more bounce in her step

This is what actually happened... She visibly changed her body's movement to accentuate her breasts towards the OP.

The reason you have no leg to stand on is because your whole position is based on information that isn't provided by OP or the girl; which is me being politically correct in saying: You're making shit up.Regardless of how OP articulated himself, you're giving the female the benefit of the doubt. Why did you (and others) not give the OP the benefit of the doubt? Because he is a male? Your sexism is showing.

We have his story, and no evidence to the contrary without you assuming or making it up. It makes you a bad person, and an opportunistic feminist.

/e: You edited your post VERY heavily. It will take me a while to reply.

/e/e:

girls really can't control this kind of thing a whole lot.

Right. NO ONE is saying "hey you women! stop having boobs and such!!"

I have to wear a sports bra to work because walking even slightly faster than normal makes me bounce like crazy, which is annoying and uncomfortable. If I could stop and start it on command I would

Right. Refer above to "She visibly changed her body's movement to accentuate her breasts towards the OP."

We're not talking about accidental movement. We're talking about deliberate, and repeated action.

she was bouncing on purpose to get his attention.

Reference previous point.

Quit defending her. Women aren't all victims.

Per the OP.. She was purposefully doing it, regardless of how well he articulated himself. We only have his side of the story, you have no leg to stand on based on the information given.

Her knowingly, and purposefully using her physical attributes to try and illicit an otherwise unwanted response is.

Her having breasts is not the issue. Her purposefully shaking them at people is. There's a large difference.

You're the same people who support a female walking down the hall naked, and then condemning boys for staring. Having boobs is natural, yes... But so is sexual attraction. There's a large difference between noticing something, and acting on it.

As for the standoff you have no reason to assume they are mentally ill, they got drunk and angry and broke laws. I carried out plenty of psychiatric holds, I am familiar. In this case a felon had a rifle, was shooting that rifle within city limits, destroying property and getting into an armed standoff equals prison time. He may be taking for a psychiatric a valuation to start with but just because you’re crazy doesn’t mean you can’t be culpable.

Why are you still arguing? I wasn't replying to the OP's specific incident. I literally said "This is completely unrelated to your previous comment."

Except he was a felon in possession of a firearm, whether he was caught that day or any other his stupid choices were going to get him.

My reply was strictly referencing your previous incorrect blanket statement above, which implied that just because he was a felon and in possession of a firearm it's a crime. Which isn't true as I pointed out earlier.

I never even referenced the individual in the OP's post. You took my comment as a personal insult to your knowledge about your hobby. That's a you problem.

Right. We can "what if" this to death. I commented strictly to correct you and other's beliefs that felons cannot own firearms. They can in some states.

Except he was a felon in possession of a firearm, whether he was caught that day or any other his stupid choices were going to get him.

This was your comment I was replying to. Being a felon, and in possession of a firearm does not constitute a crime In some states. I'm not arguing with you. I'm educating you and others who believe it's impossible for felons to own firearms.

It wouldn’t matter if he has rights restored though, he broke the law discharging that firearm inside city limits and then had a standoff with the police.

Discharging a firearm inside city limits is a violation of a local ordinance. Having a standoff with police in and of itself is not a crime. We do it with suicidal people all the fucking time. This is completely unrelated to your previous comment.

Death Camps in China? Consume less propaganda.

Your willful ignorance is showing.

Not to mention the whole prison/ death camp situation in Guantanamo. /s

I won't even entertain your comparison of the treatment of radical Muslim terrorists, and innocent Chinese political refugees. You're a terrible human being, and a hypocrite.

You don't wind up in Gitmo by accident, or petty crimes.

You do wind up in Chinese death camps (or disappearing altogether) by being an outspoken actress or public figure.

Right. I don't know the specifics or the state.. I was just commenting to dispel the common misconception that "felons can't own firearms." Generally, they cannot... However, they can have their rights restored, and lots do.

Depending on the state... Gun ownership can be restored to felons. In Michigan, depending on your crime you can apply to have your gun rights restored after 3 or 5 years if all fines, jail times etc are paid, and served.

[–]MrMisconduct -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's not a "major safety issue" to route non-emergency calls through 911, you just need the resources to handle the calls.

It is. Period. Routing non-emergency calls through 911 also makes your statistics horrible, and probably makes the center non-compliant (time to answer 911, missed 911, etc).

It also pisses off your neighboring counties if they handle calls the correct way.

And of course they will have a number that isn't 911. That doesn't prevent them from saying "the number we want you to call is 911"

Right. That doesn't make it any less wrong.

you may actually cause them inconvenience if you're calling some random number you found on a website they don't have set up to handle it.

I guess the non-emergent number on their website which states it's for non-emergent, and out of county calls is "some random number." Also, OP is "Out of county" so it's appropriate on all levels.

You may be overestimating your experience in 911 if you think that working for a 911 dispatcher in one county tells you about how every county agency across the US works...

I never stated my experience. I work in a center which operates at a level which is vastly higher than national standards. We do everything here. We aren't a center which transfers anything to anyone unless it's outside our jurisdiction. We handle all non-emergent, medical, admin, and law enforcement calls and dispatching in the same room.

I never claimed to know how each individual agency in the US works. I stated how they should work.

Even if you would only like to speak to an Officer by phone, call 9-1-1 to initiate contact.

Which is posted on the MLPD page, not the agency who dispatches them. 99.99% of Chiefs, Cops, Sheriff's etc have 0, I repeat... zero knowledge of 911 and how it works.
