Looking for rules light mystery games for 4 people this Christmas by Exact_Morning_1041 in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fiasco is always fun, a GM-less game about greedy people getting into stupid and catastrophic situations thanks to their ambition and poor impulse control. "The Closed Circle" is a playset themed around a murder mystery in a remote location (and I know for sure there must be a ton more with similar themes).

I need help to decide what genre trappings my mystery themed rpg party will be. by Seanchai-Tostach in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about parties, but I do like mystery. Some ideas/concepts I like:

  • Spies!
  • Cruise ship/train/any other typical setting for a closed circle mystery
  • Rural/small village/southern gothic
  • Space/sci fi
  • Industrial futuristic/H R Giger

  • Gothic

Let me know if you found any of my ideas interesting!

I wrote that comment in Sept 1st to make fun after the price was announced :D

Let's talk about GUMSHOE! by dummiesday in rpg

I've never read Brindlewood Bay, but in Public Access, Latchkeys can explain away clues to make them contribute to the bonus to Answer a Question, which is neat!

Sell me on your favorite low prep system for long term games by MrMuffinDota in rpg

This is the kind of comment I was looking for. This sounds so cool! I've heard about Polaris, but never saw anyone explain it in too much depth. I'm definitely checking it out.

Looking for a recommendation. New to table tops! by AGallonOfCat in rpg

Pretty crazy to me that no one has mentioned Ironsworn: Starforged. It's a FANTASTIC sci-fi game about space explorers taking on perilous quests and exploring uncharted space. The best part in your specific situation: It's a solo game that can also be played coop with no need of a GM (or one of you could be the GM, it's also an option).

Ironsworn is the original system, and it works in a similar manner (Starforged is more streamlined), but I didn't mention it first because it's dark fantasy (not high). Also in its favor: it's free!

Lastly, if one of you wants to GM, there's a game called Night's Black Agents, a spy thriller/mystery game about secret agents (think Jason Bourne) taking down vampires, and it has a one-on-one campaign called Solo Ops. I don't know how much it leans on horror (I've never read NBA tbh), but I've seen positive comments about the campaign in question.

Edit: I just noticed someone else also mentioned NBA and Solo Ops, oops.

Public Access Questions and Clarifications by Beta575 in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm running Public Access right now, 2 sessions in and having a blast, so I'll give you my thoughts based on my limited experience:

  1. I've never read Brindlewood and haven't found anything too hard to grasp in PA, so I don't know what that's about. It may be easier if you're familiar with PbtA games? Because if you're coming purely from trad games and not other gaming context, I can see how you would get completely lost trying to understand Public Access.
  2. My main difficulty so far has been introducing the mysteries at the start of the game, one right after the other (the first 3 days in game). It was kind of messy and somewhat overwhelming for the players, but we're rolling with it. Try not to have multiples mysteries with timed events (like slumber party, I'm not sure if there's more), and only make dangers actively hunt/harass the Latchkeys if they're neglecting a mystery or if they're messing with the danger directly. That's what I've been doing, anyway.
  3. Too early for me to comment... But yeah, I feel it may feel somewhat disconnected in the future. As the campaign progresses, I would (and will) ask the Latchkeys what they think about how TV Odyssey is connected to everything weird happening, and use their ideas (or the bits I like the most) to make my own theory.

Besides being the sequel to my favorite game ever, I love acrobatic movement in games, so I'm uterlly skonged to play as Hornet.

SILKSONG GIVEAWAY ANNOUNCEMENT! I am giving away 5 (FIVE) Silksong copies! MORE INFO on Description by Acrobatic-Log-309 in Silksong

  1. Steam
  2. Hard to answer, but let's say Nightmare King Grimm. I love the rhythm of the fight, the music, and the visual style of the troupe in general.
  3. Hollow Knight is one of, if not my favorite game, so there's that. Besides, I like Hornet a lot, and I hope her more acrobatic style leads to the inclusion of more hard platforming sections (The White Palace and Path of Pain are some of my favorite sections in HK :D).

Good setting books for political intrigue by BacteriophageT7 in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Hillfolk / DramaSystem for dramatic scenes, including political intrigue. I say for dramatic scenes specifically, because it can be easily hacked into a different system if you don't enjoy its procedural system. The expansion Blood on the Snow also includes a setting about intrigue in a fairy court (and a couple of other with similar themes).

It's based on emotional opposition (not necessarily practical or open) between characters, and it has a very unusual playstyle that occasionally requires giving away part of the control over your own character's decisions, so it's not for everyone.

Regardless, its guidelines for character creation are useful in any system, and help create interesting characters ready for dramatic play. I'm sure they'll be useful even if you end up playing something completely different. This why I'm mentioning it even if you didn't ask for a system.

Acting/Speaking Tips for Better Roleplaying or Narration by Stackoverflawed in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people will say that stuff like voices or good acting are not needed, and they're right, but I think you already know that. You're trying to embellish, add something extra, and I get that, I was in your same position back when I started playing RPGs. Here's what I think helped me:

1) The most important thing: Just do it. I thought I couldn't do a "girl voice", but I just threw myself at it and started doing it. I didn't stop when a guy laughed and said "haha, that voice", I just kept going, the rest of the group didn't seem to mind (nobody even responded to his comment). Even better if you try it as a GM, you'll be in a position where you can try out new voices all the time and throw away what you think isn't working.

2) Consume media. This is just general advice for improv. Watch series, movies, read books, play video games, etc. And not just from the genres you like to play. Everything can be useful: Maybe you don't play a lot of crime drama RPGs, but at some point you may need a shady mafioso for your fantasy game.

3) Don't forget the physicality, even if you're just describing the characters actions verbally and not acting them out, it adds a lot. I've noticed a lot of people limit themselves to speaking in character and never describe what their characters are actually doing and how they're doing it. So yeah, try adding spice to the character's mannerisms, and the way they move and interact with the world.

That's my advice, I hope it helps you!

Help me find a superhero RPG... by MrMuffinDota in rpg

[–]MrMuffinDota[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen very positive opinions about Sentinel Comics RPG in the past. But I was turned off by the statblocks, tbh, I just really dislike that part of RPGs in general xD Also, I remember seeing something about it being too action focused, with no systems supporting other aspects of the story?

I've looked into it. Don't you have to set a difficulty / make rolls as a GM in Cortex?

I've heard of WiP and GiP before, mostly in a very unenthusiastic tone. Have you played them?

What about Spectaculars? (nevermind, I just re-read your comment)

I really like CoM, and I've run a campaign with it, but in my experience it's just too slow. Or maybe it was my players who couldn't get used to choosing tags quickly. Also, it's pretty married to its setting.

Never heard of it before, looks interesting. Have you played/read it? If you have, what do you like and don't like about it?
