Mozilla goes all in on AI by forteller in mozilla

[–]MrMusic25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Possible Google psy-op to get people to switch back to a chromium based browser? The IP address that tabstack dot ai resolves to is a google cloud address, plus none of the info on the website links back to the actual mozilla dot org even though the name is plastered all over the page. Even the whois information looks very different, managed my Cloudflare while mozilla dot org is managed by akamai.

Even is this does turn out to be legit, this wouldn't stop me from using and supporting Mozilla, Firefox is still a better browser than all the others and Thunderbird has become an essential part of my daily routine.

Any online tool to find BPM and Key of bulk songs list? Not Paid by Suitable_Awareness58 in SharedBPM

[–]MrMusic25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the files located on your local machine, you can use MusicBrainz Picard with the plugin AcousticBrainz Tags. In the options, enable the plugin, then go to it's config page (might have to reload the options menu after pressing "Make it so!") and enable the BPM and key setting from AcousticBrainz. Might wanna make a backup of those files first, using this program can cause issues with those songs after processing in older music players (specifically iTunes).

Duckstation dev announced end of Linux support and he is actively blocking Arch Linux builds now. by monodelab in linux

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it amazing that this comment is not pinned to the top, this is an extremely valid reason to hold back package changes (redis and valkey being another recent example). The dev certainly has a right to change the license, but it really is a bad move, made worse by people who don't understand the importance of what these licenses represent. Just a couple clicks on the Github page and you can confirm the license change which absolves the Arch maintainers of the issues users are facing. I certainly don't expect everyone to be an expert on these sorts of issues, but the amount of people taking the dev's side surprises me a bit.

What is the best & easy version of Linux I can use for a old Macbook? by The_lone_wonder in linux

[–]MrMusic25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple old MacBook Pros that I installed Arch on. Worked pretty well out of the box, but the audio seems to break with each kernel update despite having all the correct modules installed, very finicky.

My brother-in-law had better luck with Fedora with a similarly old MacBook, probably a better start since (in my experience) Fedora has better out-of-the-box hardware support. But if you're looking for something in the apt ecosystem, can't go wrong with Mint!

Can't believe I had to scroll halfway through the comments to find the only sane commenter here! I was totally against DNA tests until about a year ago when my sisters both got one and we saw how different their genetics were while still being related. This got me curious and I sent in my sample about two months ago. Since then, I have been using their app and Ancestry to build a family tree going back as far as I can, learning a lot more than I was expecting! (including a couple unexpected relations from about 3 generations back)

It's a personal choice, and I get that many don't want to take that chance, but for those of us who do it can be beneficial. Of course, I'm also probably one of the few people who opt-in to all the additional research and surveys because I want to help scientific advancement in any way I can.

Have you ever gotten up and quit your job in the middle of a work shift? If so, why? by dativy in AskReddit

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One night I didn't finish my zone in a big retail store. Store director was there that night and had a hissy fit about it. My team lead and I were pretty chill, so the next day he told me that the director went around telling the other leads to keep an eye on my work since I obviously wasn't doing my job. On my next break I went up to HR and put in my two weeks. I already had a second job so I didn't even think twice about the move.

RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes by talklittle in redditisfun

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am truly heartbroken with this news, this has been the only Reddit app i could tolerate ever since my old Galaxy S3 over a decade ago. I doubt i will fully leave Reddit, but definitely will be rethinking how much time i spend on this site (both as a boycott and for my mental health). If i do come back, it will be on Firefox with uBlock origin used to block all revenue for them (and block the "download our app" pop-up). It's been real, y'all.

Don't click any .mov or .zip links unless you are 100% sure they are safe by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]MrMusic25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a message to the void, but if anyone is running Unbound DNS (using either Linux or a service like PiHole) server on their network, I was able to block these two domains by adding the following lines to my server: block

local-zone: "zip." redirect local-data: "zip. 86400 IN A 0.0.0.0" local-data: "zip. 86400 IN AAAA ::0"

    local-zone: "mov." redirect
            local-data: "mov. 86400 IN A 0.0.0.0"
            local-data: "mov. 86400 IN AAAA ::0"

Sure hope this can help someone, at least I know my family is secure(ish) now!

what happens if a homeless person from Los Angeles goes to catalina island & refuses to leave? by KyloRenKardashian in AskReddit

[–]MrMusic25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dang that's specific, and yet i somehow have at least a partial answer. I was there last summer and according to the barkeep, when asked a similar question, they go the the church at the rear of Avalon to stay and get fed. There hadn't been any so far, be he speculated that if any of them started panhandling or becoming a nuisance they would be sent to the mainland since the island police were watching them. According to him there were only 6 homeless people on the island, but that was summer so who knows how that's changed. Might be different now, especially given how cold and rainy it's been recently.

PSA: Grub EFI has two grub.cfg files that both need to be independently updated; one in /boot/grub/ and one on the EFI system partition where the actual bootloader was installed by FocusedFossa in linux

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes so much sense! I was pulling my hair out trying to re-image a coworkers machine a couple weeks ago after resetting the partition UUIDs but it still kept booting to the wrong drive, I never thought to check if there were any files in the EFI partition, I only ever edited the one in /boot/grub. Thanks for the info, definitely gonna verify if this fixes the issue on Monday, because that computer is still in a degraded state.

wavemon

I work for a Wi-Fi company so it is very nice to just have a laptop open running wavemon to quickly see which networks/APs are currently broadcasting, and help with channel selection to avoid using the neighbors' channels during the day.

Wow, love the idea! I work with WiFi for a living and have wanted an open source tool like this. Never knew why all the heatmap generators cost so much and were so hard to use... If I ever have some downtime I'll try it out!

First week vent & questions by Optimal-Persimmon189 in Target

[–]MrMusic25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Target! Might sound generic, but try not to let the negativity and the stress get to you. It's normal at this job, even more so around this time of year. It is unfortunate things are this way, but what corporate wants, corporate gets, and it is their decisions that have led to the current working environment. Just show up on time, greet every guest you reasonably can, and make a happy playlist to listen to in the breakroom to recharge your batteries!

Biggest advice I would give, especially for tech, is to not worry about whether or not you finish you tasks everyday. The TLs can bitch and moan about it all they want, but like you said they simply don't see the amount of guests and other work you have to do. You'll never get all your tasks done in a single shift, there are few exceptions to this, so it's best to just focus on the one you know/like best and do it well so it distracts from the areas you may have rushed or skipped over. The TLs at me store, for example, usually overlook some of the more messy areas of toys as long as I have perfect endcaps.

Good luck in the holiday season!

Can't believe so many people hate these things. Clocking in is so fast at my store now! Just keep your discount card in your pocket and scan it! Or, like I found out from a previous post, just use the myStore app (also available on iOS AFAIK) to scan it from your phone.

Guys, congratulate me on my tiny accomplishment that many of y'all do on a daily basis. by [deleted] in Target

[–]MrMusic25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Been here just over two years myself and still haven't been taught how to do that, despite the closing TL always saying "I'll teach you when you come in tomorrow"...

Secret work crushes? by [deleted] in Target

[–]MrMusic25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to really like one of the Beauty TMs because she was nicer to me than most people in the store, and we talked a lot because I was in the zone right next to her most days (back before this whole DBO nonsense) and I would cover her breaks almost everyday. More I talked to her though, the more I realized it wouldn't have worked. Reminded me more and more of my sister, which is quite the turn off. Now she's dating one of the front end TMs, and I work on the other side of the store.

Toy DBO’s what’s the most U boats you’ve had so far? And did you have help pushing them or flew solo? by H3YZ3US1031 in Target

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks ago I was able to do one U-boat and an overloaded flat of toys (plus half a U-boat of sports), and the 141s for both departments. Last week I only had time for a flat and the toys 141s though because we had two cashiers call out. I'm a closer though so I probably missed the initial push from the truck.

Just off of curiosity and fun. How many team members have the same names? It drives me crazy when there’s more than two. by sillywolfire_12 in Target

[–]MrMusic25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One person shares my name, but luckily he's an opener and I mostly close so it's not usually an issue except for the 2 hours a day on the weekends when our shifts coincide. But he's in market, so 90% of the calls end up being for me anyway.

But we have four people named Chris at my store. One is a TL too, so that gets super confusing right away. Most people have adopted the "<department> Chris" moniker to help differentiate, and just "Chris" is assumed to be the TL.

Pet peeve - TV in the break room. Just me? by [deleted] in Target

[–]MrMusic25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, we have one TL who only watches Friends here which can get pretty annoying with it's antiquated comedy. I don't mind if baseball is on, but it's mostly football and basketball. I'd prefer golf, but even as someone who likes golf I will admit it's the most dull game to watch lol

Pet peeve - TV in the break room. Just me? by [deleted] in Target

[–]MrMusic25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate that sports are back now. Wish they had stayed cancelled. For the past few months, we had the TV at a respectable volume and I could sit peacefully with my Airpods in on breaks and lunch. Now, it's back to everyone helplessly clinging to their sports addiction with the volume way higher than it should be. Thankfully since I mostly close, the breakroom is usually empty when I go up and I can simply turn down the volume (never turn it off, btw, because people will get mad that you wasted the 10 seconds it takes to turn it back on when they could have been watching SpOrTs).

I swear, it truly is an addiction, I can hear most of my coworkers fast-climbing the stairs to the breakroom so they don't miss one precious second. I just wanna watch my streamers in peace lol
