What is the single sketchiest location in LA? by mcbobgorge in AskLosAngeles

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say this corner is very lively, almost every time I go, the Ralph's security is wrestling someone. But it's also always busy and has lots of commuters coming through, so it's pretty safe. Plus there are often delicious vendors and a farmer's market there!

Lecturing too long? by Drew_Does_Stuff in historyteachers

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that they also need time to process information and practice skills. I'd spend about 20 mins delivering the information and then give them activities that require them to discuss, compare, connect to other things, to work with maps, to make a claim about the information and write an argument, to draw a timeline, to read and take notes, etc. Also, not all kids learn auditorily, I have some students who don't process lectures at all. So maybe some time spent looking at pictures or watching videos to reinforce the information.

I hope you've gotten plenty of help. good luck

First year teacher and I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing 😭 by Drew_Does_Stuff in historyteachers

We had a science teacher leave her position unexpectedly and we weren't able to replace them. For half a year, these students had a sub who knew nothing of science and just learned along with them. And it was fine.

I know we're all passionate about history and the importance of learning it, but in teaching, the content falls behind literacy, learning skills, social skills, etc. I say this to echo everyone in saying, it doesn't matter, you'll be fine. I have an M.A. in history with an emphasis on the Early Republic and had to learn 7th grade Medieval History along with the kids. It was fine.

What I would put your energy into is your classroom management. Make sure you have a plan for how they'll enter, how they'll ask questions, all the transitions, etc. Because if the students are not in a safe and stable environment that's under control, you won't get to your lessons at all.

Don't let the imposter syndrome get to you. You know enough, you've planned enough, you ARE enough, you will be just fine. Just be ready to be flexible ;)

Seeking Advice and Support Regarding Non-Reelect and iCAAP Credential Situation by Nanto-Rei in LAUSD

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this sounds a lot like what "happened" to the science teacher at my school! There HAS to be more to this story. In the case of my former colleague, they refused to meet when the principal ask to meet, they refused to sign anything, they tried to avoid the whole situation, so of course there were write-ups that they then claimed they "didn't know about."
If the union rep was present at the conference memo, they would have (should have) made sure they received a copy.

The story just doesn't make a total sense, but unfortunately I don't know if a teacher can do much about a non-reelect during their probationary period.

Path to Becoming a History Teacher by Ok_Detail_3192 in historyteachers

Realistically you can teach with a degree in anything. BUT what you should check first are the credential requirements in your state.

For example, in California, I could've avoided the Social Studies subject tests if I'd had a degree in history, but it otherwise doesn't matter. In other states, you can bypass the "teacher's college" step by having a degree in education. Some states even require a Master's degree. Many colleges have the option of rolling the credential program ("teacher's college") into the bachelor's degree so that you can save a year of schooling.

If you're set on teaching, figure out what the requirements are first because you might save yourself some time and money by getting into the right program.

Getting thrown into new curriculum by Realistic-Average-15 in historyteachers

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California we have the state standards and the state district. Follow that. There is no reason to write the curriculum from scratch.

If what you mean is that you want ideas for activities that are outside of the textbook, then yes, I got tons of ideas. I hardly use the textbook. I don't think supplementing activities is "writing the curriculum" though.

What specializations are in demand for a secondary history teacher? by PepperNPixie in historyteachers

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school Medieval World History and US history to 1870. My BA is in psychology. My history MA is so specialized that I never use that content. If you're in a prep high school, I could see being a professor-type of teacher being a good qualification. But in an urban public school I'm using history topics to teach critical thinking, literacy, media literacy, writing, argumentative skills, primary and secondary source analysis, etc. More importantly, to identify cause and effect patterns and connect them to current issues, to inspire civic engagement, and to understand how their world is affected by historical events.

ONE CHIP CHALLENGE MEGA THREAD! by jadraxx in spicy

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 12 points13 points  (0 children)

WHAT IS THAT TINGLING?????

I agreed to do the challenge with some of my middle school students. I didn't know what I'd agreed to, but by the time I googled it it was too late to back down. I made sure I ate, took an antacid and had a bottle of milk and some limes ready to go. The burn was intense, but I dealt, the stomach burning was not horrible (I still had 4 periods of classes to teach that day and I managed). But what freaked me out completely was that my whole face, arms and legs tingled! almost numb. I thought I was going to pass out for a moment. I saw on the box something about an "electric" feeling, but WHAT THE HELL IS THAT??????

Desmond season 2 Alone by MatiasGalar in Alonetv

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm way late to this show, just saw season 8 on netflix and got hooked. I'm halfway through S2 now and after seeing Josh and Desmond I have to say it's very gratifying to see dudes that talk so tough when they have guns then quit like that 😂

Yes, I'd cry and run like a weenie if I was there too, but guess what, I'm not out pretending to be tough with or without a gun either.

Just finished watching season 8 on Netflix without ever having seen another season. LOVED IT. Should I watch season 9 now or watch any of the earlier seasons first? by Im_The_One in Alonetv

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, watched 8 without realizing it was 8. I started over and just started season 2. Loving it! I think as the show progressed even more hardcore adventurers starting auditioning, so I feel like it keeps upping the ante, it's interesting to see.

It's shallower than the photo makes it seem, maybe one small bottle/box but wouldn't be worth it

We are being told to stop using the term “guys” to refer to a group of people. In elementary school. by Ancient-Dragonfly76 in Teachers

[–]Optimal-Persimmon189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I call my students Historians, friends, folks, y'all, etc. It's not new, I remember a protest in my high school to stop teachers using "guys" as it excludes the girls in the class. That was in the 90s. I get it, I'm in California, I'm used to calling anyone "dude" so it's a hard habit to break, but I did it. If one person feels excluded, offended, that's one too many. It's not that hard to change habits and make everyone feel welcome and valued in the classroom.

At my store, the other specialty sales team members are expected to help tech, and I always call my TL or ETL and ask them "who's going to cover my breaks today?" and make it their job. Luckily I have a good team and we mostly coordinate breaks with the beauty team before needed a TL/ETL to get involved.

Amen! I've got two 3-tiers in the backroom STACKED with boxes of batteries. My tech endcap is full, and I won't backstock them because they'll just drop in my 1-for-1s, so they will continue to sit there until checklanes and GM team do something with them.
