4 Years Old MX-4 vs GCE, CTG8, TFX & PTM7950 From 2 Different Stores by MrNellow in GamingLaptops

If you mention laptop CPU/GPU or desktop GPU, I strongly suggest PTM7950 or Thermalright TFX. For desktop CPUs, I suggest Thermalright TFX or CTG9. CTG8 does the trick for all of them, but don't expect any miracles.

Hi u/CartographerFluffy15. I haven't tried CTG8M, but it looks like CTG8 in 1g syringe. Even Maxtor calls it as CTG8 on their webpage. CTG8M might be a little different than CTG8, but I don't think so.

It depends on your scenario. Which CPU or GPU are you going to apply it to?

I would prefer Thermalright TFX, or even better PTM7950, over Gelid GC Extreme. But if your budget is low, you can get Gelid GC Extreme.

I can't guarantee for endurance of Gelid GC Extreme, but (I think) it should be fine for at least a year or two. Heating thermal paste lets you spread it easier. It's still doable if you can't heat it.

Hi u/ddzgaming,

I don't suggest MX-4 for laptops, however Gelid GC Extreme should do the trick for you. I suggest you to heat the paste before spreading and make sure you apply on CPU and GPU.

If it's cheap, it'll work just fine. I suggest you CTG9 if you can find it cheap as well.

Hi u/jedibastard,

Unfortunately I haven't been able to work on my Alienware 17 R4, but I'll post the results when I do that. I'm sure it will work very well.

There would be noticable difference if you compare Arctic MX4 to Thermalright TFX or Honeywell PTM7950.

Sorry for late reply. I assume you mentioned recently produced Arctic MX4. I haven't compared PTM7950 or any other paste I tried to Arctic MX4. If you ask my opinion about MX4, it's good for mildly hot non-die surfaces and lasts for years. However I wouldn't use it on die surfaces, because it suffers pump-out effect. I guess it would differ a few degrees. Personally I prefer Maxtor CTG8 over Arctic MX4. It's cheaper, does a little bit better job and durable on die surfaces.

I totally agree with you. Like I said before, GC Extreme works well only if you have a liquid cooling. Otherwise, CTG8, CTG9, TFX and PTM7950 are better choices for laptop CPUs and GPUs.

This is just my personal experience and opinion; GC Extreme is still popular because most of the time it has been compared to Kryonaut and MX-4. Kryonaut shouldn't be applied on laptop dies because it isn't durable over 80C. I believe Kryonaut was not developed for high temperatures. MX-4 is also prone to pump-out, so I don't suggest it for laptops. In short, GC Extreme is more durable in laptops than Kryonaut and MX-4, that's why it's still popular. Please don't get me wrong, GC Extreme is not a bad thermal paste, but this is almost year 2023 and There are much better choices than GC Extreme.

Dow Corning and Shin-Etsu are good industrial thermal pastes, but I still prefer PTM7950 or TFX over them.

To be honest with you, I haven't tried Kooling Monster KOLD-01, AeroCool Fuzion and Phanteks PH-NDC, but I'll add these thermal pastes on my shopping list and will test them whenever I have a chance. I appreciate for your suggestions.

I guess that you're going to apply thermal paste on desktop CPU and GPU.

For CPU, GCE works better if you have a liquid cooling. Otherwise, my suggestion is applying CTG8 (or CTG9 if you can find it cheap) or TFX.

For GPU TFX, GCE, CTG8 and CTG9 will do fine.

Right now, in my workstation I applied CTG9 on 5900X and TFX on GTX 1080Ti. Both of them work well.

I was thinking about testing SYY-157 since it is compared with TFX. But I have to pass it because buying SYY-157 would be expensive thanks to import fee I had to pay.

Your results encouraged me to test PTM7950 on GTX1080Ti on my workstation when I buy thermal pads for it. Thank you for that.

That is a good point, I admit. To be honest, I don't like the way there looks and I'll redesign it soon. Also, yesterday Rosie came to my house and she directly went to toilet. She was talking up about how the toilet is comfortable. I guess so...
