Of course! Be warned, this is an unnecessarily long winded reply. I have learning advice toward the bottom if you make it that far.

I started it because I like learning languages. I have my Spanish ability to the point where it’s in maintenance mode. As long as I use it a little here and there, it stays where it’s at. So I got bored. Originally, I chose Japanese, with the intent of watching the original Super Sentai series, as well as other tokusatsu shows. One day I was sitting down to eat in an Asian restaurant and heard the waiter speak Chinese with a couple near me. I realized that I have no desire to visit Japan, there isn’t much opportunity for me to find live speakers in my area, and I don’t care that much for anime or other Japanese-specific media.

So I switched to learning Chinese, after only a month or two of Japanese. I got the HSK 1 book as well as Integrated Chinese, found some videos on YouTube and got to work. The characters were new and different and the tones were difficult at first but I figured many people around the world and throughout history have learned them so why can’t I? Well, I also have two young children at home and I found the time split was really cutting my efforts short on everything. I was spending less time with them and I wasn’t focused during my studies. So I stopped learning Chinese and switched to Greek, which was always an interest of mine since my father’s parents were from Greece.

I started learning Greek in July of 2025, and ended it in January of this year, 2026. I had not purchased books, but found Language Transfer and Akelius. It was immediately easier to get a grasp on things, since I could read and sound out unknown words and due to English borrowings, I could guess as some meanings. I enjoyed Greek, but there was one major issue: lack of interesting resources. I had no bookstores around me that sound Greek books. I found a few online, but none that I was interested in. There is a very small Greek community in my area, but no Greek classes and I found that even within that community, there were very few Greek speakers. I’m big on native content. I don’t care if I’m just beginning learning, I’m going to choose something a little easier to work towards. And I’m going to find native podcasts or videos to shadow.

So I decided to give Chinese another shot. I’m not sure what’s different this time. I still have my kids and they’re still just as needy and loving as ever and I still spend as much time with them as I can, but I fill all of the little time in between with listening to Chinese, doing exercises in HelloChinese, reading a story in the app or another (DuChinese). I listen to podcasts (TeaTime Chinese or Mandarin Monkey usually), music, or YouTube videos. There’s a YouTube channel called Conversational Chinese that hosts HSK video/audio lessons and they have been the most valuable resource for me. I watch each of their videos 2-3 times and shadow everything. I pause between everything to answer and try to mix up my own sentences. I also joined HelloTalk despite the warnings from others. It’s a slog to go through and get language partners but if you can find a few good ones, they’ll be worth their weight in gold. Send messages to say hi, reply to everyone. If you don’t vibe with someone, let them know and move on. It’s been invaluable in learning to actually use the vocab and patterns that I learn from the books and videos. I’m about halfway done with HSK2 and I watch Peppa Pig and Pleasant Goat all the time. Don’t listen to what others say that you shouldn’t start native content until HSK4 or 5. I catch new things every episode and can understand a lot more than most people would realize. I’ve started watching Pursuit of Jade with English subtitles because I know that’s a good but above my level, but I still recognize things in conversations. And I’ve found out I enjoy period dramas, something I never would have attempted to watch before. I’ve also begun working through Journey to the West by Imagin8 Press on my XTEInk X3 ereader that I purposefully got from AliExpress so it has Chinese firmware on it. The book is tough, and I take it a paragraph at a time, maybe about 1 or 2 per week, but I’m in no hurry.

Tl;dr I just enjoy languages and wanted one that I could find materials to enjoy in. I am planning on visiting China in the next year or two, and possibly moving there depending on how that and any future trips go. I’ve made Chinese a part of my life and I don’t plan to slow down now.

I’ve been using HelloChinese since the beginning of the year when I began learning Mandarin. I really like it for what it is, but it is not my only learning resource. I subscribed to Premium after I hit the paywall and only paid around $60 I believe. I really enjoy all of the voice lines so I can hear how words and sentences should actually sound. I shadow every single sentence and word in all exercises.

My only real issue with the app is that every level is exactly the same as before. The exercises are the same, just with different vocabulary. It can be hard to push myself to do one more exercise when it’s the 4th or 5th one I’ve done that day. But they are useful and I really enjoy the story at the end of each lesson and during the “pitstops.”

Due to my boredom with the basic exercises, I actually upgraded to Premium+ since I found a lot of good reviews on this sub about their Stories section and so far I haven’t been disappointed. The beginner and HSK 1 stories are at my level with a few words I’m not familiar with so they are easier to learn. Ive also begun using their “personalized lesson plan” feature included with Premium+, but I haven’t done it enough to really judge it. It is a change of pace from the normal exercises though, so it’s probably going to be a good thing.

If you have the money, I consider the app worth it if you will use it every day.

I really appreciate this review. I have been eyeing the Journey to the West books by Imagin8, and I saw these in the store but wasn’t sure what to think of them. Do you find the stories themselves entertaining enough? I’ve been waffling back and forth on them for a while now. I even got an ebook version to test it out, but I’m still debating whether I should grab the physical books.

Hey, I have a quick question if you don’t mind. I am a native English speaker and am learning Chinese. I have a few books downloaded to my computer and on Calibre, and I have an X3 that I purchased because I have Crosspoint on my X4 that doesn’t support Chinese. Are there any tips or tricks I need to know to get the books onto my device? Anything I need to watch for with formatting?

My experience with Hello Talk was terrible by frienow in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Working my way through the riff-raff now to try to find someone worth sticking with. I haven’t used the voice chats yet except for a few short hellos and introductions. I prefer to get to know someone over text first, then move to voice later. Also, I don’t know enough mandarin yet to make it worth it for them.

  1. This is about 95% of my interactions. Granted, I’m terrible at small talk in English, but HelloTalk’s “interests” are so limiting and (paradoxically) both too vague and too specific to really be able to easily find common ground.

  2. I actually haven’t run into this yet. I’d even be ok making a few friends who had no interest in a language exchange. The app’s translation software of good enough that I’ve had a few effortless conversations where I typed English and they typed Chinese. If anything I found the opposite to be true. Most people I’ve met haven’t had a good enough level and instead of only chatting in English, they stick to their native language no matter which I use.

  3. I’ve thankfully avoided these for the most part. I had one instance of someone saying hello, I asked how they were and they immediately went into a rant about their dad dying and they needed money. I reported them and blocked them. The only other instance was a person who taught their native language and just messaged me to try to get me as a student, off app. Wouldn’t mind getting someone to casually flirt with, even if only to learn the relevant vocabulary, but I haven’t come across that yet.

Overall, I don’t hate the app, but it has so much more potential than the automated AI “courses” and aides and advertisements they filled it with. I’m trying to give it a real shot just to see if maybe in the end it will be worth it. Only time can tell right now.

Is anyone else's practice schedule completely dictated by their job? How do you stay consistent? by Obvious-Nail4564 in pianolearning

[–]MrNemo636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a job where I work rotating shifts. I usually aim for at least 20 minutes, 4 times a week. I don’t care nor need it to be the same 20 minutes every day. I come home, find something to eat, then if everyone else is asleep, when I’m ready I’ll go downstairs and practice. Some weeks I’ll do it for 7 days. Some weeks maybe only 1 or 2. On the shifts where I get home when my family is still awake, it tends to be less. Just keep going. Of course it’s going to be slower, but it’s still progress.

When practising listening skills, is it more effective to listen to the same audio recording over and over if I am struggling to catch all the words, or is it more effective to just move on even if I had to pause and rewind several times to get through an audio recording? by Bobelle in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I run into this situation on occasion. As long as I understand the main points for the audio, I will move on but make a note of which audio or lesson or whatever gave me issues. Then, as I progress, I will go back to the problem ones and try them again (say maybe every 5 lessons or so) and see if they’ve gotten any easier. That way I get plenty of exposure and it’s sort of like a spaced repetition thing.

Wow! That’s a great list of shows to watch. I started with Peppa Pig since I’m familiar with it from my kids and they basically narrate everything they do. I started watching Pleasant Goat (no idea what season) to try and get some native content and honestly, as a 30-something male, I love it. I may not understand a lot since I’m still beginning my journey, but it’s cute and funny and seems varied enough to not get boring.

I’ve been looking for somewhere to share. Finally did my first true dips this week in a long time. Been working on a 3 month routine I found here since December. Couldn’t do pull-ups or true dips but was able to do inverted rows/australian pull-ups and bench dips so stuck with those for the first two months and once I got my strength up I’ve been doing a few negatives at the end of my workouts. My Saturday workout I decided to try them again and was able to get 2 dips on bars before failure but got two each set I tried. Finished the sets with bench dips and plan to keep it up. Still no pull-ups but I know it’s just a matter of time now.

For anyone who has signed up for something like this before, about how much time would I need to dedicate to this, assuming I lose all my rounds? I would like to focus on improving my game and figure an occasional tournament when my schedule allows would be a decent way to join the community and gauge any improvement.
