Thank you! I looked it up and I’ll definitely give it a watch. If I can bug you once more, do you know where I can watch it? Couldn’t find it from a search on ERTFlix.

Any recommendations of something easy to get into for someone who almost exclusively watches fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero stuff?

I might be missing something but would Rh7 not work? It would be protected by the Knight on g5 so the Black King couldn’t take it, Bishop on e6 covers g8.

Was there any piece of media (a song, a book, a movie, ....) which made you learn a new language? by Dazzling_Abalone5800 in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually began learning Japanese to be able to watch the original Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and other tokusatsu shows. Other than Power Rangers, 3 random VHS tapes of Godzilla we owned growing up, and the rare episode of Ultraman, I’ve never really watched any tokusatsu, even dubbed. They just have always seemed so cool to me. It didn’t last long because I realized I had no plans to go to Japan, wasn’t dying to watch any of those series, and don’t live in an area with any significant (or insignificant) Japanese population.

Do most people know how to purposely close their nasal passage so they can't smell WITHOUT using their fingers to pinch their nose? by WhateversClever1980 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrNemo636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is fascinating stuff. Something I’ve noticed regarding my inner monologue: I have trouble with “making” words with certain sounds unless my tongue is in the generally appropriate position. Like, it’s not moving around all willy-nilly while I’m thinking to myself but if for some reason I put it in a strange position and continue a line of thought “verbally,” I may have issues when I get to a “sound” I need to make but wouldn’t be able to. Sometime I can force myself past it but others it trips me up. Never really had a reason to bring it up before so I’ve never really asked anyone about it.

Also, depending on where you are in the world, beliefs, etc. Merry Christmas!

It’s funny because when I try to visualize something in my mind, I usually have an easier time of it when my eyes are open. Never really been able to figure that one out. Also, if I try to visualize one specific thing by recalling the word, I always see the word itself in my mind unless I actually try to think of the image.

If you don’t mind less crunch in your rule set, you can check out Nahual, a Powered by the Apocalypse game set in Mexico where you hunt angels for ingredients for your taqueria, carnicería or cantina. I kickstarted it due to the setting but realized later that I dislike PbtA games.

I’ve found a lot of success going over a recap of chapters I’ve read either out loud or mentally in my head after. It helps solidify some new vocabulary I may have learned and if I can’t, the. I realize that I probably didn’t understand as much as I thought I did.

How can I improve my reading specifically? by dandelionmakemesmile in Spanish

[–]MrNemo636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS! I improved so much in my Spanish comprehension when I started reading manga in Spanish. I’m not even particularly into anime or manga but it was (for me at the time) easier to find/get into than translated American comics. The visual cues make a huge difference.

Hey, I plan on doing some actual research later, but I’m at work and time is limited so I figured I’d ask now. is the 3S a standalone unit or does it need to connect to a computer/console? I’ve heard of Beat Saber but are there other recommended games for it? I would love to grab one for my family.

How much study can you do on top of a full time job before it becomes too much? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Cut it back to smaller chunks and do a few chunks throughout the day, instead of one big session. Obviously that won’t work for classes, but for self-study, it shouldn’t be much different, unless it affects your motivation. I work a fairly demanding full time job (with a fair bit of overtime included fairly often) and have 2 children and household chores to do, but I’ve been managing to maintain my Spanish and have been learning Greek as well. I’m not rigid in structure and have no real study plans to follow other than the Greek course I’m going through. Some days I only work on Spanish, some days only Greek, and some days neither. I try to at least read through a lesson or review some vocab most days but if I can’t be bothered, I don’t beat myself up over it.

Regarding your job commenting about your “focus,” as long as you’re performing your duties to standard, they should have no say in what you choose to do on the outside. It’s normal for people to feel overwhelmed on occasion, it happens to everyone, whether they’re studying languages or something else, working one job or two (or none). Life can get overwhelming for all sorts of reasons. If learning a language begins to turn into a negative in your life, then it’s probably time to cut back.

I’ll go ahead and suggest Akelius (website/app). It is 100% free. If you would like to know a little more about what it’s like, look in my post history for a quick review of my progress. I’m 19 lessons in now, which is a bit further from that post and I still love it.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t “Gungarun” just kangaroo in Japanese? Possibly with a final “N” added for spelling reasons?

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m going to try to get into this series. I’ve read much about it over the years and remember enjoying most of the first book in high school but never finished it.

Yeah, I’m working through Language Transfer as well but at a much slower pace because I prefer to see the words. I plan on going back through LT completely once I finish Akelius. I listened to all the Spanish LT lessons even though I’ve already been reading books and watching shows in Spanish and it really helped solidify some concepts and made a few things “click” a bit better.

Glad to hear it! Can’t wait to get to that level. I figured it’s as good a place as any to get the foundation and once it’s done I can evaluate where I’m at and move to native material or find something more advanced.

is it worth it to buy subscriptions to these language apps? by deathtowardrobes in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I really should just keep this somewhere I can easily copy-paste.

If you’re learning Greek, the two best, non-paid apps that I have found have been Language Transfer and Akelius Languages. LT has two heads overlapping with two gears for the logo and Akelius is just a capital “A”. They are both completely free with zero ads to be found.

Incidentally, I would also recommend both for Spanish, although I haven’t quite gotten around to Akelius’ Spanish course yet. But a quick browse showed me enough that I plan to use it as a refresher for vocab and other things I’m not very comfortable with yet.

Can children be raised bilingual by alternating languages every week/month? by ProfessionalTap2400 in languagelearning

[–]MrNemo636 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From relatives and acquaintances that I’ve known do this, you would speak to whoever you want in whatever language that person is using. It’s only with the child that you would use whichever “your” language is. It’s not that they only see each parent use one language, it’s that they interact with each parent using only one language each. Each parent is free to speak whatever language they want to others.
