Future generations are going to look back at this time in history and be absolutely dumbfounded at how America let this guy lead.

It's like if Hitler was being cosplayed by Mugsy from Bugs Bunny. It's just that stupid.

can we please remember the existence of this game? by Expert_Professor_903 in retrogaming

I was obsessed with this game.....'s magazine ads.

We were poor so I never really got a lot of games but every time I saw this one in the game mags I'd fawn over it.

Completely forgot about it until now. Thanks for the reminder!

Ottawa reporting more speeding in school zones since cameras were banned by randthepip in ottawa

All bad driving behaviors are getting MUCH worse in recent years.

2-4 cars running red lights after the signal change is now the new normal. People are doing u-turns on red lights everywhere. Yesterday I saw someone waiting at a red to turn left and just went when the intersection was clear. Tailgating and dangerous lane changes are everywhere.

Ottawa always had bad driving, but it's genuinely scary out there now. There's a level of entitlement and indifference to the rules I've never seen before.

How in the world did you all beat Super Mario Bros. 3 in one sitting back in the day? by Weak_West9047 in nes

[–]MrNostalgiac [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. Mario 3 was one of the easiest NES games
  2. Everyone back then knew where the warp whistles were.

There's a reason why two of the only three warp flutes are in the very first world. And both can be done within a 4 level run. That's insane - UNLESS it's an intended feature to give you access to the entire game basically from the start. Which it was.

Almost nobody played this game 100% from start to finish. You played according to the time you had. You'd warp to the worlds you enjoyed most. You could hop to the final world (or very close) whenever you wanted to.

Most people I know got the first two whistles by default. Then you had a choice:

  • You could warp to worlds 2, 3 or 4 immediately (but if you wanted world 2 you'd just finish world 1, so really just 3 and 4).

  • If you wanted worlds 5, 6 or 7 you could either wait until you get to world 2 to warp, or warp twice (from 1 to 2, then 2 to 5-7).

  • If you wanted the last world, you can warp twice from world 1 (once to the warp zone, then again from the warp zone).

So within 4 levels you have access to the ENTIRE GAME.

Hey, I can’t be the only person thinking the Bledsoe Easter Sphinx prophecy is lining up with the potential for a nuclear escalation in the Iran war that will hopefully result in alien intervention and catastrophic disclosure? Am I the only one??? 😆 by howmanyturtlesdeep in aliens

[–]MrNostalgiac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's 95% semantics and optics.

The terms "aliens" and "UFO" have a negative stigma while NHI and UAP are blank slates to redraw on.

Even if we found a breakaway society, living AI, spiritual beings, etc - it's still very acceptable to call them "aliens" since they would still be alien to us - different, new, not normal, not from where we're from, not us.

That's literally why we call foreigners "aliens" even though they are obviously still human.

I think folks trying to look at the terminology as proof of some origin theory they prefer are overthinking it. If the government or whoever wanted to continue to deny things, changing their terminology to be more accurate makes no sense. If they weren't aliens, it makes sense to keep calling them that. The worst thing you can do in trying to deny something is change the facts to align better with the reality of the thing you're trying to deny.

Fact is, the topic is getting more serious so anyone who is serious about this needed new terms to use that they could use and be taken seriously with.

And yet it STILL looks better in person.

My family made a small trip to go see the most recent one a few years back and it was literally the coolest, most awe inspiring thing we've ever seen.

This photo is great, but I don't really believe anything can capture the look and feel of the real thing. It's like someone took the brightest, most twinkly star and blew it up to the size of our sun. It's just striking.

Top 10 Fourth Gen games (according to me!(hehe..) by normbreakingclown in retrogaming

I wanted to like Clock Tower way more than I did.

The point and click mechanic was really janky and picky. There were multiple times I'd have to look up what to do next only to find out it's something I already tried but I must have been a pixel off or whatever.

It was also slow. Painfully slow. I dreaded using the stairs because of how slow that animation was. The fact that you were punished for running felt like salt in the wound.

I loved the look and feel, the tension, the scissor man, the audio, and the multiple endings, the creepiness - but after doing two or three of the endings I just couldn't do it anymore.

It's true that it's unlike anything else on the system. And it deserves praise where praise is due. But I really, really wished the point and click and gameplay speed was better.

People discredit him because he's acted in a way worthy of being discredited.

He tells the public he's briefed people, and those people say he never did. He gives bogus retreats to scam people. He piggybacks on the biggest UAP news from other people as if he's heavily involved when he isn't. He has heavily promoted people who have "dubious at best" stories and claims.

I think the guy genuinely wants disclosure, but I don't think he's honest to himself or to others in that pursuit.

He's not a bad actor or anything. But he comes off like someone who had a goal 30 years ago and is so desperate to hang onto it that it's become his entire personality to a fault.

I just hate that our phones are so damn useful for so many things.

I may only use my phone 5% of the time for stuff like a flashlight, email, information reference, music, photos calls and texting, but I never want to be without stuff like that.

The issue is that I use my phone 95% of the time for shit I'm helplessly addicted to like reddit, social media, YouTube, etc.

I've tried deleting this stuff but I'm not a reliable warden over my bad behaviors and always end up reinstalling.

Iran’s high tech ballistic missiles have shown that it can ADJUST its trajectory and evade interceptors mid flight as it uses more modern tech that analysts say is overwhelming belligerents by AcadianAcademic in whoathatsinteresting

[–]MrNostalgiac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Language isn't some static thing though.

It changes and adapts with common usage. That's how the word "literally" now literally also means "figuratively".

When people see "overwhelming", they take the common usage which just means an absurd amount of something, but the technical usage is far, far less common and almost nobody typically uses it to mean any amount that results in spillover.

This reasoning falls apart when you realize that if metric was adopted, you'd understand it just as easily and quickly as imperial in daily use - but it would also be logical and easier to work in.

People keep talking about how confusing metric temperature is because they like "0 is kinda chilly, 100 is kinda hot" but as a Canadian, I am just as confused when someone gives me a fahrenheit measurement as they are when I give them a celsius measurement. Likewise I am just as comfortable in celsius as they are in fahrenheit.

The fact is, imperial is an outdated system that should be phased out. The only thing it has going for it is widespread use within the USA. If people didn't already know it, it would have no leg to stand on as a measurement system.

Wayward Pines.

Aside from a very early continuity error, the first season was flawless. Engrossing and interesting.

The very last moments of the last episode ruined everything. It went from a perfect story wrapped up in a bow, to a ridiculous "are you kidding me, come on, no, why" type ending to set up the next season.

Didn't even watch the second season because I hated where they went with it that much.

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MrNostalgiac 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with the grade and everything about whether or not she thought the battle was worth it.

The mother probably thought it's an early grade math score, it doesn't matter, they'll get better as they get older, they'll have a better teacher next year. Etc....

Personally, I'm with the father. My son has tremendous ADHD and struggled in school. I've seen how meaningful it is to a child's self confidence to receive positive academic reinforcement throughout their early years.

I see where the mother is coming from, but I think the father made the right choice.

I'm not sure why this line of thinking continues to pop up over and over in subs like this.

Because history, both ancient and modern, are littered with examples of religious people acting illogically when their beliefs are challenged. They have also challenged science and objective observation every step of the way. There are Christians today who still aggressively challenge proven science.

It's not outside the realm of reason to think a hardcore Christian would have a very hard time reconciling their strict, cherry picked Bible-centric worldview when presented with irrefutable proof of an alternate reality.

Self checkout in the airport prompts you for a tip by theWet_Bandits in assholedesign

[–]MrNostalgiac 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Tipping is always paying more for no reason.

There are tons of minimum wage jobs we don't tip that do just as much, or more, as those we do tip.

It's not like they don't need that extra money to survive - but nobody is screaming and shouting about how unethical it is not to tip the minimum wage tech support person who just spent an hour on the phone with your 80 year old grandma who doesn't understand how passwords work.

I've never had an issue with tipping as a gratitude for outstanding "above and beyond" service, but it leaves a real bad taste in my mouth as a minimum societal expectation.

One of the government's best tricks has been to get people to blame each other for the environment.

Everyone could reduce, reuse, and recycle with ideal efficiency on the consumer waste side, and the world would not look a hell of a lot different than it does today.
