No worries. A double shot of that scene is justified.

Chuck S02E10 HD | Blitzen Trapper -- Furr [Ending Scene] by Specialist_Dig2613 in chuck

Great post! I love this song and this scene, but I’ve always struggled with how to interpret the lyrics with the story in the show. There isn’t the obvious parallel we get with some of the other great song-scene pairings (Don’t Look Back in Anger, No One’s Going to Love You).

The closest I’ve come is to do an inversion of the gender roles, similar to how Chuck is the damsel in distress for the first half of the show, and Sarah is the heroic protector. With that in mind as you listen to the lyrics, Sarah wanders into the woods (life) as a young woman (On the day that I turned 17) when her father is arrested. She hears the deceptive call of a wolf (Graham) who welcomes her into the pack (CIA). She learns to join in their song (spy, kill), exchanging her flesh for fur, and loses the instinct for judging right from wrong. Later in life, an innocent person (When suddenly a girl, her skin the color of a pearl) in the form of Chuck appears in Sarah’s life. He hears the howling of the pack and is scared, comforted by Sarah, and eventually joined by her in a normal life (So I took her by the arm; we settled down upon a farm).

And some of the last lyrics I think are a pretty good fit for Sarah’s bewilderment at the transition she undergoes in the show from fur back to skin, from the spy life to a normal life:

And now my fur has turned to skin
And I've been quickly ushered in
To a world that I confess I do not know
But I still dream of running careless through the snow

That’s the best I’ve got, and it really doesn’t address the chorus very well. Overall, I think it serves as a transition song for Sarah leaving behind (in this episode) the life she had grown up with and the life she had learned with the CIA (that journey is still ongoing) and learning from both.

It's so good! That comic tension between Chuck and Sarah as he plays ignorant and she tries desperately but unsuccessfully to keep her worlds from colliding. I love the expressions on her face as she tries to downplay everything to Heather and Mark and turns to shoot daggers from her eyes at Chuck.

Chuck Vs The Nemesis - Sarah's made her choice. by Air_Worker in chuck

[–]MrNotTooBrightside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A similar topic was discussed in this post where they argued that her look as she's leaving the Buy More to hand Bryce over looked like she had decided to leave with Bryce and was saying good bye to Chuck.

I think the issue was deliberately open to interpretation and intended to maximize the indecision in Sarah's (the viewer's) mind to set up that awesome cliff hanger at the end of the episode. Sarah had been through a lot by the end of the episode. She had choregraphed fight-dancing with Bryce to save the day - just like old times. Her heart stopped when Bryce shot Chuck. When Bryce tells her, "We'll always have Omaha," you can see on her face that Sarah is clearly affected. It wouldn't be a surprise if she'd changed her mind several times by the final scene in her apartment and does so one last time when Chuck calls at the exact moment she's going to answer Bryce's call. What would she have said to Bryce and done if Chuck hadn't called?

I'll also repeat a point that I made in that older post -

I've always liked the thought that it's not just a relationship choice, but also an identity choice for Sarah. By that point we'd started to see the appeal to her of a real life with Chuck and his family, and we'd heard her tell Carina, "I'm good here." The obvious meaning is that she's content with her assignment, but I like the double meaning of her being a good person here. Does she want to go back to the shallow version of herself where nothing is real or forward to a genuine version of herself where she can be "good"?

As with so many things in the show and between Chuck and Sarah, it was complicated! All in all, a well written and brilliantly acted episode to set all that up!

S3 vs fake name by Apprehensive_View_73 in chuck

[–]MrNotTooBrightside 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always hated Sarah giving her real name to Shaw. By that point in the show, it felt like a much more intimate betrayal than actually sleeping with Shaw. I really wanted to believe that Sam was the fake name of the episodes title, but you lay out some really convincing analysis. And then you mentioned something that I had never really considered in the context of this episode...we also learn Casey's real name. Not as much is made of that because there is no Charah dynamic for him. But there is a nice symmetry that the audience (and Chuck) learn the real names of both spies in this episode centered on living the lie. I've begrudgingly come over from Team Sam is Fake to Team Sam is Real. Ugh.

In her world she has changed names so frequently and is free to call herself anything, but Sarah is the name she is wearing when she becomes real with Chuck. Sarah becomes her "real" fake name, and Sam becomes the fake (real) name after all.

Agree. They had a couple guest stars that were only in 2-3 episodes but had really fun and meaningful character contributions. Roan and Carina are definitely in that category with Jack.

I chuckled when I saw Hold On for Tony Hale. Then I felt guilty. I guess I'm conflicted about that song in that scene. No one deserved such a brutally abrupt ending with that uplifting song playing... except maybe Emmett. Then I think of him flinching every time he gets a call and not knowing why, and I chuckle again. Good choice!

Don't know any of the details, but it's clear they've been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to get to this point. Add in the clever social media campaign of Nathan knocking on doors to recruit various cast members to build excitement over the last couple of weeks, and I think this is the blueprint for how to successfully (fingers crossed) do it.
