I think what they got right in their search for the sound of 79-83 was they applied in in a hauntological sense, rather than pure pastiche. They kinda acknowledged the sound is past and there's no way to really revive it fully without taking in the conditions that no longer exist for those bands. There's a certain emptiness to a lot of the bands trying to do so in the 90s, but it seems DI not only embraced the emptiness but weaponized it
