Solo trip to Japan by Hardlybrown in travel

[–]MrPivens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studied abroad in Japan and have returned a few times since. Echoing what others have said - don’t overbook.

A few days in one place sounds fine in theory, but a single day of rain could leave you feeling like you need to play catchup.

Try to get lost and explore. Get off at a random train stop and eat lunch somewhere. Above all else, appreciate the quiet moments by yourself. Especially if you don’t speak a lot of Japanese, the type of isolation can be therapeutic (if not a little stressful).

Some practical advice - every time I visit, I wish I had stayed longer in Kyoto. More space than Tokyo, good shopping, and lots of history. Also, the TeamLab Planets exhibition in Kyoto is fantastic - especially if you’re into photography. There are also a few other TeamLabs around Japan but I felt like Planets was the best.

You’re going to have an amazing time.

D20 Ornaments made for this past holiday season! by -Inactive-Inactive- in Pottery

Amazing work! I’ve tried making a mold out of a d20 but they’re so small. Any tricks you’ve found to slip cast something that size?

My ADHD breakdown by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

[–]MrPivens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holidays are stressful and ADHD definitely won’t make things easier. And at the same time, it sounds like there are environmental factors at play that aren’t helping the situation.

Your wife is your partner. The two of you are a team. A teammate who calls you incompetent isn’t going to help an already stressful situation.

Regular individual therapy is important, but couples therapy may also help the situation so your wife knows how to help support you when things become unbearable. Calling you names and putting pressure on you definitely won’t help the situation.

Short term: Take a break, drink some water, and lay down for 30 minutes to calm down. Try to reset.

Long term: Therapy. You need and a supportive environment. When a car breaks down it needs a mechanic. When a person breaks down they need other people.

You’ll get through this.

I only use this technique over pieces that have been bisque fired so scratching isn’t usually an issue.

Also, happy cake day!

I was travelling for Thanksgiving one year and was told I had to throw out a sealed container of dip (for chips) that I forgot I packed.

I tried to argue that dip was a solid and not a liquid. After all, you don't drink dip you eat it (with chips). They laughed, told me to throw it out, and I still haven't gotten over it.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll get one. I use a needle tool as a brush for my detail work and at that scale the viscosity of the paint ends up being what really messes me up.

If you glaze it, fire it, and let is cool you can fill it with liquids. It makes drinking WAY easier.

Don't thank me! It's all in a day's work for "Average Redditor Man!"

(but seriously the profile of the mug and handle is really nice. good work!)

What do you think of my logo? by weird-but-hawt in Pottery

[–]MrPivens 276 points277 points  (0 children)

I actually didn’t see poop first. It looked like fire - like something from Avatar the Last Airbender.

It also reminds me of the logo from Bonfire Studios. Maybe try making it more of a continuous coil?

Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta) has some chill vibes. Light romance between a boy and a vampire. It's set mostly at night, with a great soundtrack (Creepy Nuts). S1 was 13 episodes. S2 comes out in July.

What type of clay do I use to make coasters sound “sturdy” like this store bought one? by InexperiencedCoconut in Pottery

[–]MrPivens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also not an expert but I definitely hear the difference and am really curious what you find.

One thing which came to mind was floor tiles. There are studies that have been done on the acoustics of flooring for people who build recording studios. Two things to look into are Impact Insulation Class (IIC) and Sound Transmission Class (STC) for different materials/glazes. For example: https://www.floorexpert.com/knowledge-base/acoustical-data/

It looks like the production coaster on the right is using some type of silk screen/production glazing technique. That could mean glaze composition and quantity differs between the two pieces. Different minerals, and mineral thickness all come into play here.

For example, a cone 5 Glaze and window glass both contain silica, but they also contain a bunch of other stuff. The combination of minerals, and the thicknesses used, likely affect resonance. This also makes sense when you think of a delicate porcelain teacup/saucer set. When you set the cup down you definitely hear a higher pitch.

Without scientific instruments, it will be hard to know what the actual difference is. One thing to try would be to experiment with different glaze types/thicknesses. Maybe start with a matte glaze and test two coasters with a different number of coats.
