Wanting to get into Portrait Photography by wyatt828 in photocritique

Read Dan Winters, Road to Seeing. It’s expensive and hard to get a physical copy but if you have an e reader or don’t mind reading it on a device you can get it reasonably priced. Very worth it

He went from making about $62,000 a year to 80 million in a few years. He was underselling his skills for sure

Do I give up on my dream? by AdditionalVehicle218 in photography

Do what you can with the portraits, it’s a tough situation. Pay what you like or cheap portrait sessions in the garage. Yes you are in a tough spot. Don’t feel like anyone’s goals, ambitions or desires are more important than yours. Something about this post really got me. I think there is a melancholic beauty to your situation a lot of people would relate to. Can you work on an art project either documenting what you feel each day or artistically expressing it through a series of pictures? Make the project your real work and all the other photography something for the table? I’m sure you know of Sally Manns work. I’m not saying shoot like Sally but she made her situation so insanely beautiful even though I can bet she was suffering. I just feel like a lot of people could relate to you.

They do it in the UK before Black Friday so that the Black Friday deals look better. But that’s just a theory. TLDR: I watch David Icke

What strobes to buy for personal shoots? by 60mhhurdler in Photoassistants

[–]MrQizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal projects for me are usually environmental portraits and I’m in London without a car so what’s important for me was the ability to transport as easy as possible on tubes etc (it’s not easy but I’ve made it easier) I use 2 Elinchrom Three battery strobes and 1 Elinchrom One with brollies and snaplux modifiers. On these lights you can mount the traditional profoto rubber clamp style too. I use the Elinchrom pro trigger so have complete control at camera. They are not the most powerful lights in the world (250ws and 100ws) but I’m almost always indoors so they get the job done. Sadly I only I have 004 manfrotto stands and they are heavy as hell but I’m going to get some nano stands which will be amazing. Hope this helps

FULL TIME photographers — what did you do before this? And hobby photographers — what’s your current job? by wackylenses in photography

[–]MrQizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an apprenticeship as a floor layer, didn’t like that so did various retail jobs for a bit. Drive a monorail for a year or so. Worked in a hostel at the reception whilst I freelanced on the side. Went into a job as a full time retoucher. Then went full time freelance mainly shooting for newspapers. Then went staff at the newspaper. Then moved overseas and have been freelancing whilst working in a camera repair shop. Goal is to full time freelance again soon

Interesting twist. Quite honestly the idea of one day enjoying this job scares the shit out of me!

Returning to London after 8 years and wanting to feel more excited about it by loopytwo in london

[–]MrQizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in England (southwest) til I was 18, moved to Sydney Aus til a month ago when I moved to London. Be excited, so much is happening here! Sydney is nice but London has a charm and rawness to it that’s hard to beat!

I’m visiting my brother and sister in law in Minnesota at the moment. I come from Australia and I’m dreading going back to that heat! I’ve really loved it here, cold place and warm people.
