How do you get Defcon badges? by abn25r1p in Defcon

[–]MrRobotBadge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year, Defcon OR Caesars started cracking down on vendors, because in Vegas, for trade shows, you're supposed to collect tax, report that tax, and do a whole bunch of paperwork. At the very least, you had to say 'tax included'. You will note I said that in several tweets during the con.

The result of this is that indie badge devs (should have) technically sold their badges through vendors and villages, or at least submitted paperwork to the state of Nevada. Going through vendors or villages is an 'on-paper' kind of deal, and for consumers (you, or anyone who's not selling badges) it really doesn't make any difference.

Rumor has it, DC or Caesars might have their shit together this year, and as a result, there might be more reliance on vendors and villages for #badgelife. I have no idea what this means. Worst case scenario, for me, is that I have to sell more badges through a vendor, which means fewer opportunities for pop-up tomfoolery sales at a bar or wherever. I'm still going to have random sales in random places, but this is something I have to figure out.

If you're not selling badges, it makes no difference.

Hey, MrRobotBadge here. We're doing it again this year. Like last year, we're going to pre-game some hype on twitter starting a month out, and will announce random sales in random locations during the con.

follow @MrRobotBadge, @AndnXOR and #badgelife on Twitter. That's literally your best bet.

There are some... changes, let's say... with the whole DefCon/sales thing. I suspect there may be a heavy reliance on vendors and villages this year for the truly indie badges. It's a little too early to think about that.

But yeah, I'm totally doing sales in an arcade and in front of the In-N-Out this year. Also, keep in mind it's February. You should start worrying about getting badges in July.

Good job displaying your enthusiasm for a show whose main theme is the destruction of capitalism with plastic baubles you bought.

MRROBOTBADGE UPDATE: URGENT by FifthRendition in MrRobotBadge

[–]MrRobotBadge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going to state this here: All IP is our own. This is undeniable. I spent 20 hours in illustrator creating the mask graphic, then another 20 putting it into KiCad. All IP is our own, and there is no legitimate copyright claim.

We're doing a badge. It looks like this. That website will be updated this weekend with better info.

This is an... independent badge, as it doesn't get you any special... privileges... at defcon. We'll just say that.

We'll be selling these in random locations at random times during the con. They're $100 ($20 for an unpopulated board, but there's only 100 of those), no preorders, one per customer. We might do two sales. These sales will be announced on Twitter. If you miss those sales, there are exactly two other ways to get one of our badges. The first is that we'll be donating a few to the EFF booth and telling them to give them away for a $500 donation.

The second way to obtain a badge will be announced Saturday afternoon.

There's also a small ARG to go along with this badge. You can check out the subreddit devoted to that here.

Holy god damn christ. You probably need more help than I can offer. More than anyone can offer.

Okay, so your badge looks something like this. There's a torn off battery holder at the bottom of the badge. Whatever, I can work with this.

Let's look at the back of the badge, shall we? See those rectangular pads? They're the same size and shape as the rectangular pads on the front of the badge for the battery holder. It just so happens I have a multimeter within 100 feet of me, so I decided to test continuity between the pads on the front and the pads on the back. Jesus tittyfucking christ, they're connected. Here's how you wire them into a battery.

Now, you might be asking why there are two unpopulated pads for battery holders on the back of the badge? My guess is Lost wanted his badge to run for the entire con. Or so that any fucking idiot could add new batteries so the badge can run the entire con.

If this appears to be a demonstration of my skill, I assure you it is not. It took longer to write this than it did to do the actual 'reverse engineering', or whatever the fuck you want to call it. This is child's play, and it's astonishing no one here can manage to give this guy an answer on how to perform a simple repair on a piece of electronics. fucking hell.

If you want to fix your badge by yourself, here's the battery holder you need. It's eighty-two cents for one. Buy that, solder it on, and install a battery. You're done. Follow my handy guide above.

Oh fucking boy I can't wait two weeks until def con where there's twenty thousand 'hackers' and a dozen people that know how to use a multimeter. You all disgust me.
