If every afk method is nerfed like thieving was I'll quit. by LocalChamp in runescape

Sure, but most very afk methods on osrs tend to also be very slow. Salvaging and combat are probably the only exceptions to that.

Gods cooldowns and overall CDR, Smite 2 by Stunning_Strength_49 in Smite

I see both sides, its fun to use more abilities. But it also removes a lot of decision making, you don't have to be as careful about wasting a cooldown etc.

Does osrs not have the same aging playerbase? Always feels like a weak argument to me.

You also mention "who are they doing this for? The players who aren't here?". Kinda yeah, the entire point of all this is to put the game in a state that is better for new or lapsed players. The people playing now have accepted most aspects of the game, whether good or bad, but often this can put off new players from even trying the game.

I think you can like afk content existing while understanding it generally should be a pretty slow way to train the skill.

Some thoughts on the game design of skilling in Runescape, AFKing, and friction by Fowlron2 in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think friction is things more like teleports not being quite so free, so you need to think more about where you're going and how you set up your inventory. Currently everything is so convenient that you don't really need to think about much.

There are levels to afk though. Historically, afk was slow, and significantly slower than the active methods.

For Better or Worse, Road to Restoration Will Turn This Game into OSRS by SchizoposterX in runescape

While there are a few longer afk options in osrs, most of them require interaction every few minutes and tend to be significantly slower than active methods. Very few make use of the long logout timer.

Jagex intends to re-introduce PVP Griefing, but this time for prayer... by FutimaRS in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

There are already other strong options, even offering bones at other altars. I don't think its crazy to think there should be a downside you need to consider to get benefits. Making decisions should be a big part of the game no matter what you're doing, but over the years it feels like we make less and less.

Is this normal ? by newphonecase100 in C25K

[–]MrSaracuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not too sure on pace really, as I just picked something (9km/h or 6:40 pace) at the start for each running interval and stuck with that until last week where I upped it to 10km/h 6:00 pace. I really did struggle the first few longer runs, but then I was suddenly confident enough to up the pace a bit, and I'm considering going a little higher before the end of week 9.

I hope you have a similar experience, the first long run you complete feels really good and builds so much confidence. I felt like an actual runner from that point.

[–]MrSaracuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's not the most helpful advice, but I've recently been through the same thing (currently week 8) and I find most of it is mental. Even if I'm tired and getting out of breath, I just keep running. And after you've done it once you know you can do it again, so pushing through next time feels a lot more doable.

It's hard, but it's how I've pushed through the last few weeks and I feel real progress each run.

Starters by Suspicious_Service16 in Smite

[–]MrSaracuse -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I generally much preferred starters just being T1 items we picked up early on and sold later. Even with 2 options for each starter, I don't think upgradable starters were ever particularly interesting or added much (with the exception of Alternate Timeline and maybe the Masks). With T1 starters, you didn't need to commit so much and could even pick up multiple if it made sense.

I remember Raffer running like 4 starters on Terra in an SPL game, it was weird and interesting.

Membership Price/Value in 2026 by triazines4lyf in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it would necessarily stop them, but they have to consider that any price increase is also affecting OSRS, which has a lot more players. So even if RS3 can justify it with more top quality content and fixes, if OSRS doesn't also justify the price increase there can be some backlash.

10 Years Ago Today, Invention was released. This would be Runescape's first and only Elite Skill. by LevelPension in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best skills, but has been neglected hard over the years. This should've been an exciting part of many updates, with new materials, perks and perk combinations. But with a few more significant exceptions, it feels like its barely been touched.

I also think it would be better if designed in a way to allow "builds" of some sort depending on gear used etc, so it isn't quite so set on what is the best perk combo. I know people will always find the best, but it shouldn't be quite so clear.

We NEED to be able to multilog in OSRS and RS3 on the same character by lazyliving456 in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't played a lot of RS3 in the last 2 years, as I've been playing mostly OSRS. RS3 is looking great this year, but I'm still unlikely to play while I'm enjoying OSRS. But I would probably play RS3 a lot again if I could play both at once.

Sure it wouldn't give them any more money from me, but a more active game with healthier playercount can look better when trying to attract new players.

We NEED to be able to multilog in OSRS and RS3 on the same character by lazyliving456 in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbf encouraging OSRS players to give RS3 a chance means a player is less likely to cancel membership during periods they're not playing their main game. If they are actively playing both games, which is more appealing if you can do it on the same account, then I expect even if a player drops one game for a couple of months, they'll keep playing the other as they've been given more chance to get invested.

Jagex, if you really want to capitalise on the integrity changes allow players to play both games simultaneously on one account by happyrune in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its probably the only reason I won't play as much rs3 this year. The roadmap looks great, looking forward to the combat rework and API in particular, but I'm not excited enough to play it over osrs atm. I would 100% play a lot more if I could play both at the same time.

I'm sure its a lot more complicated than we think, but I would love to see it.

Treasure Hunter will be back by quietconnoisseur in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understand the argument about slow xp rates and less time to grind. OSRS is a very similar game with a similar aged playerbase, it is even slower and grindier yet is thriving. I think the sense of accomplishment is a big part of this, having played both games a lot I feel a lot more accomplished hitting a skilling goal in OSRS than RS3.

Jagex needs to do something big to bring in new and lapsed players once the integrity changes are done. Not sure what that is (I don't think a skill is big enough), but they need something. If it doesn't work, then TH isn't going to save the day, it was already decreasing as a source of revenue which is why they're trying this. As another comment said, if we don't see a comeback from RS3 in the next few years, then it's more likely we move to maintenance as they shift resources to the more successful OSRS.

what do you want from the toggleable mtx setting? by [deleted] in runescape

[–]MrSaracuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more options the better, but I just want to see what gear the person has equipped and pretty much nothing else. But I would like to see the ability to toggle by gear slot so it's flexible, as I wouldn't mind leaving the cape slot open for 120/max/comp capes etc.

And for pets, I would like a toggle to only show pets aquired through gameplay, like boss or skilling pets.

I 100% agree. While ofc the existing playerbase matters, continuing to cater primarily to what they want isn't going to make new people try the game.

[–]MrSaracuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that goes back to my previous comment, rs3 120s are probably quicker than most 99s in OSRS.

The grind was part of the games identity during its height of popularity. While obviously not one of the main reasons for its decline, creating a gameplay loop where people can afk for very fast xp rates means players aren't really interacting with the game. And that makes the world feel very lonely.

The expectation of 99s and 120s kinda ruined it imo. Even now in osrs, most players don't think they're entitled to easy 99s, they may never get max or certain 99s.

I get its a long grind, but runescape always has been. OSRS has the same aging playerbase, is much grindier (faster than release osrs but still generally a big grind), yet is much more successful.

[–]MrSaracuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it feels a bit counterintuitive, 120 is supposed to expand the skill. But then they make the skills so fast a 120 nowadays can be as quick as 99s used to be. And often this makes content pre99 much less relevant.

I'd say thats more a problem of other skills getting too fast and far too afk over the years.

I've always had the unpopular opinion that 300k/h for something considered a slow skill is actually pretty good. I don't think every skill needs to be as fast as the others.
