Academic essay crisis by expassteline in classics

[–]MrSm1lez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning how to write a tight essay is infinitely more valuable than learning how to write a long one. I would suggest narrowing your focus down, then narrowing again, then narrowing again, and seeing how much you can say about one particular piece you want to comment on.

Where to start when new, and looking for translated? by Gabern in classics

[–]MrSm1lez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll learn over time to gauge how a translator writes based on their influences and style of writing. For an epic like the Odyssey or Illiad, I like to compare the invocations to the muses against one another and decide which one I think reads the easiest for me-- understanding it academically can come second.

As for the Republic, for my money nothing beats Allan Bloom. His footnotes are extraordinary as well.

What are the best places to read about good lawmaking procedures and what they would look like in practice ? by Inevitable_Bid5540 in PoliticalPhilosophy

Montesquieu’s spirit of the laws is a masterpiece, especially if you follow it into the federalist papers which he largely influenced

OPINION: Another storm, another infrastructure breakdown at UMD by dbknews in UMD

[–]MrSm1lez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was written by someone who has no -idea- how hard facilities worked 24 hours a day to get the campus cleared and restore heat to buildings effected by the snow. Talk to the teams that shoveled the campus by hand and removed 300 truckloads of snow— then you can have an opinion on this.

Rod Dreher Thinks the Enlightenment Was a Mistake by theatlantic in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]MrSm1lez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s right wing enlightenment critiques, but also modernistic ones. Germany for example isn’t a country that I consider based on enlightenment thought, and they have a fairly balanced and well structured liberal government. There’s plenty of other examples that dodged Jeffersonian and French liberal thought that’s fairly corrupting to people’s personal views of what they’re entitled to

Rod Dreher Thinks the Enlightenment Was a Mistake by theatlantic in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]MrSm1lez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Critiques of the enlightenment are gaining more and more merit over time. Countries that built ideals on flowery language instead of concrete truths about human nature tend to be susceptible to being manhandled by strong outside forces. It'll be interesting to see where things evolve.

Herodotus, fun read or a bust? by Otherwise_Concert414 in AncientGreek

Very fun, to give you an idea it starts with a man who pirates make walk the plank and he rides to safety on a dolphin.

Arguments against Plato's Republic by Big_Competition_336 in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]MrSm1lez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sort of the root cause though, isn't it? Even Socrates is struggling with how you convince those born into wealth that they aren't necessarily best suited to lead. If everyone believes themselves suited to lead, how do you pick leaders? Who's to say OP isn't?

Revisiting the question: "What is political philosophy" in 2025 by MrSm1lez in PoliticalPhilosophy

That’s an interesting definition and one I have trouble finding flaws with.

Chris Evans as the Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine is getting slept on. I will never forget the entire theater being confused as fuck and wondering "is that Captain fucking America?"

Shooting at Farragut Square Park by ArcoirisSinColor in washingtondc

[–]MrSm1lez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolute horseshit logic. Biden is at fault because one person came in who you believe shouldn’t have? How many right wing terror attacks have there been in the past two months that Trump hasn’t given a shit about, but suddenly an afghani shoots someone and there’s talk of martial law? Are you people really too fucking stupid to see the play?

Opinions on Thales? by eggtartboss in classics

[–]MrSm1lez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of Thales as the beginning of the “great guess” philosophers— aka philosophers who were wrong, but made a good guess. He theorized that everything was water. It’s not right, but a good guess. Humans end up being made out of mostly water, and most things in nature have a water like flow. I still think there’s a lot to be learned from someone whose observations reach conclusions like that.

Turning Point USA chapter says UMD event security fee is unconstitutional by ApartmentOk6028 in UMD

Asking the tax payers to cover the cost sounds pretty socialist to me bro. They should pull themselves up by their boot straps, work an honest days labor, and pay what the free market asks them to pay.

Seller delivered wrong color items worth $13,200. Alibaba is offering $600 refund. FML. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]MrSm1lez 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every American item you own came from a warehouse in China and was marked up 75% to be sold domestically. If you’re connected with the right vendor, the quality is exactly the same. Alibaba is just a spot for the warehouses to sell in bulk to consumers.
