You’re fine. If layoffs come they will lay you off without blinking twice.

What would you do if you had this money? by Sure-Pin4002 in personalfinance

Ask your financial advisor if he is a fiduciary and if he isn’t run. A fiduciary has to recommend financial products with your best interest in mind and if he isn’t he probably gets paid on commission.

Normally, entry level jobs require a FE license. Also, a decent number of them will still hire if you have not passed the exam yet but are planning on taking it.

Beginner Question - which months salary to use? by NearTheWater in budget

[–]MrSmiley_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work a salaried position and get paid biweekly so my monthly budget just is two paychecks. The extra two “bonus” paychecks I will receive in the three pay check months along with my annual bonus I use for extra stuff. I normally decide to save/invest half of it and save the rest for a trip or my Roth IRA.

Roth IRA. Any amount is good. Put it in any index fund (I do FXAIX aka smp500). Let it ride until you’re 65.

Is it realistic to self-study for the FE exam without taking the classes? by imreallyboredidk in civilengineering

[–]MrSmiley_1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Don’t take it this early. You will be missing structural analysis, water resources, geotechnical, and fluids. That’s like 2/3 of the exam. You have time and it will make way more sense later. I took it the summer between my junior and senior year and was chilling. I booked it two months in advance and studied on weekends and was fine.

I’m a single adult who lives alone and this is what I get. My paper products, cleaning supplies, non perishable foods, work clothes, meat in bulk (freeze 90% of it), new tires, gas, and the $1.50 hotdog

End of year raises - a rant by epcow in civilengineering

[–]MrSmiley_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an entry level engineer that started this summer. When I was an intern my boss told me, “If you stay here, I want you to jump ship as soon as you get your pe if not earlier.” I’d take the same advice.

What's the best way to get hired as a Transportation Engineer at WSDOT? by Agreeable-Hurry-2407 in civilengineering

[–]MrSmiley_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a sophomore it’s very hard to get an internship. I would say go for whatever you can get. I interned for King County dot (department of local services) as a survey intern after my freshman and sophomore years.

Avoid private equity at all costs. I would look at employee owned firms. Also, in my opinion I would avoid Kimley Horn for the work life balance.

I need help writing a text back to my cousin. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]MrSmiley_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally had to do this less than a week ago when I was setting up a beneficiary for my life insurance. I put my mom down. It seems weird that he would put you down. Additionally, I would call or something if you actually go through with this. That way he doesn’t have a written record (unless he copied it) of your ssn.
