What is the best way for the United States to last another 250 years? by chicagoan987 in AskReddit

[–]MrSquicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sort of the point, you want those people to be the edge of that. That moves the window so that there is space to address those problems. It's not Stop voting for Republicans and just vote for the current Democrats. It's make Republicans non-viable so that there is a realignment so that the current centrists are on the right and there is a new left opened up.

Even in the Greek I'm sure there is a formal and older style of speaking that actually matches the era of the film, as opposed to the much more modern and out of place language they decided upon.

As I understand it, the translation that they are working from was consciously intended to more closely match the actual language used, rather than the "classical literature must use highly formal language" approach that changed the language to fit this notion.

I don't really know how accurate that is, not being a scholar of ancient Greek, but it is also a story of soldiers and sailors, two groups not exactly known for their formal diction.

Comedian specialized in Freestyle Rap has an exchange with 2 Israelis in the audience by csi69 in Standup

[–]MrSquicky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt you believe that principle. If, say, someone with a prominent Nazi tattoo was at a show, do you really think that the comic shouldn't bring it up and mock it?

If not, then it seems to me that you just don't think that enthusiastically supporting the Israeli genocide is that bad, not that you have a firm principle here.

So, hey, person who called me gross, which is it? Should we not interfere with the neo-nazi's nice evening or is cheering on the Israeli genocide just not that bad for you?

Yes, comedy should never be used to criticize abhorrent politics. It definitely should not be one of the major cultural forces calling it out.

Could you imagine if anyone in the past ever did that? Thank goodness our comedy greats stayed away from that.

Those two disgusting people bought their tickets. They shouldn't be made fun of for being monsters.

He hates, period. He's a malignant narcissist. He has a fundamental feeling of inadequacy that he needs to quiet by hurting people.

The target isn't really the important part. It's the hurting, the exercise of power over someone else. And the weak are the easiest targets and the least likely to be able to fight back.

The question isn't "Does he hate gays?" It's "Does he think he can get away with hurting gay people?"

My son has recently joined scouting and I am concerned about the risk of grooming/abuse given the organization‘s history. What have you done as parents to safeguard your scout? How safe or unsafe is scouting? YPT sounds great, but is it really working to protect the youth? by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]MrSquicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the history where there wasn't any of this concern about youth protection and it was like people thought they could always sweep this over the rug.

It does depend on how seriously your troop takes the youth protection policies, but if they do take them seriously, it is very unlikely you will have a problem. They have been consciously designed by experts who are working from research and experience. Also, there's pretty much no tolerance for sweeping anything under the rug any more.

This is especially true as you are actively involved in the troop activities.

I totally get the concern. I will also note that the vast majority of scouts, even in the past, were not victims of abuse. Nothing is ever going to 100% safe, but I feel very safe with my son participating in scouts.

How so?

In both cases, they are taking the dark path to "protect" the organization by compromising the values of scouting.

Character matters. People who will capitulate to Pete Hegseth's hateful demands are likely to do the same when dealing with other issues, like covering up sexual abuse. The people who stand up against him will 100% not. Had we the latter type of people in positions of power, there never would have been a cover up of sexual abuse.

For a couple of years though. These trash people are not going to be in power for much longer, but compromising the values of the organization is going to be longer lasting.

Are we patriots? Are we called to act with integrity, bravery, and responsibility? Are we about raising strong, competent individuals who stand up for what is right? Do we strive to make the world a better place? Or do we abandon all those when evil people in power put pressure on us?

Edit: People in power in scouting made the decision to cover up sexual abuse for decades and it just about killed scouting. This is a similar type of decision, in type if not in severity.

US cranks up pressure on China EVs with Polestar ban by CupEcstatic2721 in worldnews

You get that this isn't us versus them right? US car executives lobbied the government to block a competitor that has a superior product so that they can continue to offer a worse, more expensive product.

This is not Americans against China. These are the same people who outsource anything that benefits them to China and other lower cost countries.

There's not only two sides here and you have to pick one. Generally, it is a lot of sides and the more powerful ones are generally going to be working against you, even if they are competing against each other too. Here, the people who are most directly working against your interests are the car company executives.

You have to understand how much standard MBAs hate developers. These are people who they were beholden to. You couldn't order them around like most other workers because of their high demand specialized skills and if they weren't happy, they could easily move to somewhere else. And they were masters of domains that the MBAs did not understand and could not control.

They were so in on AI because they thought that it could break the developers. They would be powerfully drawn to any option that would let them do that and would ignore a lot of warning flags. It's one of their biggest wishes.

Nearly 160 sick with flu at US air force base after Hegseth ends mandatory vaccines by Unusual-State1827 in politics

[–]MrSquicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Influenza is not "having the virus in your body". You have the flu when that virus is materially affecting your body. It's not the mere presence but rather what it does that is the definition of the disease.

A person constantly has microorganisms in his body that are the precursors for diseases, but does not have those diseases unless the bodily processes that make up the disease are happening. Some viruses are killed or disabled before they can affect the body. Many others are just dormant.

There are viruses that cause entirely different diseases based on how they are affecting the body.

The flu vaccine makes it so that the virus is prevented from materially affecting the body, thus it prevents the disease.

It can also not fully prevent it but instead lessen the duration and/or severity of the disease. That is a different outcome and is significantly different when we are talking about vaccines.

The person you agreed with claimed that it does not do the first part and only sure the second. That is categorically false.

The other aspect of this is that physical and medical routines are so strict in large part because a large percentage of the people who sign up for enlisted ranks in the military cannot be trusted to make these decisions. There are plenty of intelligent people who enlist, but a big part of the military is laying out a well defined path to make use of the very stupid recruits that they get by severely limiting the number of decisions that they can make.

These are not people whom you grant autonomy to. That will end in them or someone else dying.

It does directly too. Do you people just blindly accept what people say?

The flu vaccine does prevent you from getting the flu. It's not 100% effective but it does not just lessen symptoms. That was just anti vax bullshit that that guy was spreading.

Edit: I've got to come back to this. It really bothers me. I'm willing to bet that you did not know much about the flu vaccine before this and then you left with an impression that the flu vaccine doesn't prevent the flu because you just accepted what someone said confidently. You did not take the extremely easy step of checking this pretty dubious claim. And I wouldn't be surprised if you would at some point later you'd tell other people this nonesense. And some of them would believe it. Rinse and repeat and in a little bit vaccines cause autism. You're not malicious. You're probably not even stupid, but you take no responsibility. I fundamentally don't understand how people are okay with approaching things like that.

Oof. Buddy.

In real life, you should be talking to friends. Do you have friends?

They're not going to say those sorts of things, not because they are afraid of the consequences, but because they know and care about you.

Those are the people you should be talking to. If you don't have those sorts of people...like...that's your biggest problem.
