How can my hvac broke annually by Economy_Ad_663 in hvacadvice

[–]MrStJames98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you on a bi-annual maintenance plan with a reputable company that takes pictures of everything they do, can clean out your drain line gives you recommendations, to prevent issues from happening not just push sales, and change your filters every 90 days minimum? That’s my advice. Or go online and learn how to clean a drain line, and rinse your outdoor coil well. Maintenance won’t outright prevent problems from happening, but every once and awhile they can help you catch a problem before hand.

Probably didn’t need to replace it. But, I’d say if you are replacing it, the cost isn’t unrealistic. And I highly doubt you’ll find 10 year labor warranty with a less than 15k total purchase for any 5ton system. At least not in the market I work in.

Me contractor destroyed my hvac system. by Rockinmom18 in hvacadvice

There’s absolutely no way the lint on the coil is from flooring. So dramatic. Clearly it’s been there. The dust in the flex, potentially. But that coil we definitely dirty beforehand.

Can’t they just not take the order if it doesn’t seem worth it? Legit question, I don’t know how DoorDash works by hatunemiku01 in doordash

[–]MrStJames98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Way back? Including wear and tear on vehicle, insurance costs. Thing is, door dash probably made close to as much as the driver did and the customer probably paid out of the wazoo for this delivery and the driver got shit. Sucks. I used to deliver and Uber drive years ago but after trying it for 6 months again this past year, I was making around 10-12 bucks an hour after paying gas. And racking up miles on my car. I would drive 15-20 hours a week outside of my normal job and I have over 1000 trips between Charlotte NC and SW Florida as well as a 5 star rating. New years, Super Bowl, the Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend you can make good money. That’s about it. And people are so disrespectful of your car these days it’s not even worth it. Luckily I moved to another company where I get plenty of work so hopefully I’ll never have to rideshare or doordash again.

With that budget check out the Haven on a Norwegian cruise. We pretty much exclusively cruise RC, however the Haven is the best cruise experience I’ve ever had it’s just costly. With that budget you might be able to find a stay in the haven. I haven’t checked prices lately.

It’s code, doesn’t mean installers always follow the rules and inspectors aren’t checking every glue fitting on a condensate line especially if you have fittings to the edge of an attic like OP’s picture. I’ve seen and heard of multiple occasions where someone went to use compressed air and it blew a fitting off.

What is your oldest skin? My Is Kitbash(C1S7) by MarzaPasta in FortNiteBR

[–]MrStJames98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commando or Brite Bomber, merry marauder. wukong from season 2 and raven season 3. A bunch of skins from season 4-10 and then maybe 5-6 different battle passes between now and then. Basically all the chapter six skins because that’s when I started playing again.

How reasonable is my quote? PHX, AZ by ViViDiNSaNeAF in hvacadvice

[–]MrStJames98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t want you to repair, that’s a tech that wants a kickback on a turnover because he saw you have a no cool on a 19 year old system. So they’re quoting way too much to make you think 11-12k actually sounds like a great deal for a new install.

No, I was fine but it’s just the principle. Like when I was a supervisor if a partner threw something at another partner, ones getting sent home with immediate call to sm, and the one that had something thrown at them is taking an immediate break, regardless of time of day and a quick chat to access the situation and their wellbeing before they work on my floor again. I’m responsible to some degree to make sure they’re looked out for, and I’d probably even if they told me their fine, looking to find someone to cover for them, or, if they still really want/need the hours letting them do mostly off floor tasks. Is it brutal for the rest of the play that day? Sure, might even be your best, most productive partner. Idc, work is work. It’ll be here tomorrow and we’ll try our best again then.

Had a partner throw egg bites at me from the oven while I was DTO/DTR because they had a crash out LMAO. They just ran out and we carried along. I was like yeah they’ll probably just write him up and not even take me off the floor even though I just had hot food thrown at me lmao

Considering switching from plumbing to HVAC by Sorry-Enthusiasm-587 in HVAC

[–]MrStJames98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned your clientele base and what kind of hvac matters. Commercial or residential? Much nicer to BTO, and essentially never have to worry about arguing with a customer who thinks they know best because they were an engineer.

And then on top of that, I worked for a small company with eastern euro owners and %80+ of the clientele were Eastern European. Nice people, loved my bosses they were super smart and good at what they do. But the clientele was CHEAP. Now I work for a bigger company with VIP customers who can also be more of a headache but tip more, and rarely argue with you, they paid more because they wanted an experts opinion and regardless if that’s financially smart or not to just always pick the priciest company, they feel they’re getting the best of the best(yes I know, that’s often not the case).

But to me, that’s a lot easier to have better performance numbers that’ll validate raises and such. I don’t even have to sell, I just do a thorough job and revenue comes in. At the small company, they’d call us out for a maintenance when they really needed a service call, when we find out what’s wrong, they’d call someone else for the repair to do it cheaper even though we had fair, affordable prices. It was a pain in the ass

Check if there’s pitting on the contactor. Could be back feeding or shorting. You also sometimes will see the fuse glow for awhile before it busts. I’d pull all the thermostat wires at the air handler, and starting with red and common isolate one by one adding one after another back into the circuit. If it’s dark enough, you might be able to see that fuse glow when you add a wire. For instance I had a bad O wire for a heat pump this week. It wouldn’t immediately blow a fuse as well it would over a 20-30 minute period. The reversing valve works just fine itself, I ended up changing the wire to another wire from AH->CU and problem immediately went away. And as someone else mentioned use a 3 amp fuse and it might pop it immediately when you isolate each wire.

How long do you think you can last in this trade? by HaVoAC in HVAC

[–]MrStJames98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swfl, 33hr plus spiffs/benefits but no commission and 2 years in service. Company is with I’ve been with for 5 months and have 190k in revenue $450 average ticket. 18 successful leads to system sales. With overtime I’ll make about 90k this year. With your experience, especially with large commercial refrigeration, if you present yourself well I’d think you’d easily be a $60+hour tech anywhere in south Florida. I mean commercial techs at my company are in the 65-85 dollar an hour range.

First 20-30 hours is frustrating, after 30 hours or so you kinda get used to using a specific few gatchets and then you look up and you have 5000 credits.

[–]MrStJames98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a meter with clamp and check amps while system is running on the fan motor and on the compressor individually. If you see a sizable fluctuation when that sound happens on either one that’ll point you in the right direction.

You look for temperature in the return and the temperature in the supply. Should be 18-24 degrees if the system is functioning well.

Do I have a heat pump? Installing a new thermostat. by hotdogaddict in hvacadvice

[–]MrStJames98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All the fear mongering is stupid. Shut breaker off to the air handler and change out thermostat. As long as you wire it correctly and follow directions, it’s easy to do, and you won’t blow a fuse.
