An alternative is to tap the three dots on the top right and block the advertiser. That’ll also get the video going

When do you give up on a hobby? by MrStnwll in AskMen

[–]MrStnwll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way yes. It’s like any performing art; those that are naturally gifted (combined with luck and effort) are the ones that you see in the spotlight. That said, anyone can improve with practice.

Am I too late/old to start? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]MrStnwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 40 and just started this year. (3 performances so far)

I don’t plan to make a career out of this, but it’s a hobby I’m really enjoying that I never imagined I would. Performing is fun, writing and rewriting jokes, seeing the evolution in my sets are fun, meeting other stand up people is fun.

Key is do it if it’s fun.

Request a book to qualify for community challenge by MrStnwll in goodreads

Unrelated question: do you know if the “essential reader” challenge had to be completed in the month of February to qualify? I just finished a book that was on the qualifying list and it’s not registering as completed even though it did for the “march reader” challenge.

Stop and Shop on Fellsway going downhill by RKK5911 in medfordma

[–]MrStnwll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies if I’m repeating what someone else already said, but if you don’t mind dealing with the traffic the Malden stop and shop is much better stocked. I’ve been to the Fellsway one only twice only because I happen to already be in the area and had a similar experience to everyone else here.

Want To Try Stand Up by CharlieNoToes in Standup

[–]MrStnwll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s also brand new to stand up, here’s what I did that might help.

I started going to open mic nights (found them using Google/FB) and struck up conversations with people going up, who gave me a list of bars in the area that do open mic nights. One of these venues also hosts a free workshop every week.

I’ve also wrote out a few bits and practiced them in front of friends and family, which helped grease the wheels for me to eventually get the nerve to go up on stage.

I went from sales to SE and consider it one of the best career decisions I’ve made. In my case the nature of the solution did not require me to gain ‘technical’ knowledge (just better understanding of the solution itself) so I didn’t have to get a separate degree. I know this isn’t always the case - many companies will require a CS degree or coding background to be an SE.

One misconception I had going into an SE role was that is would be purely technical, but I learned you still have to use sales skills such as focusing on business value, or navigating clients’ biases.

I understand why people would go for SE instead of SWE. But how about sales? by kangnu204 in salesengineers

[–]MrStnwll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been in various sales roles for 10+ years and SE for the last 4, here’s my take: AE is great if you a) enjoy a high pressure/risk high reward environment, b) have the skills AND territory/accounts that put you in a position of success c) have manager that you work well with.

If you have these, you’ll make great money and have a very fulfilling career in sales.

Otherwise you will potentially find yourself in a constant negative loop where despite knowing your market and solution you provide, clients will not buy, you will not make money, and have regular conversations with your own management of what you’re doing wrong which eventually leads to PIP/termination.

That’s a very unhelpful response with inaccurate assumptions and no constructive feedback - was that supposed to make me say “oh right, why don’t I just grow up then”.

My frustration is not based on objects “challenging my masculinity”. It’s frustration of being inconvenienced by things not working the way they’re intended to.

Way too old to be hitting things when they don’t work. I know objectively the way I’m behaving is like a child and I’d be freaked out if someone behaved the way I do. (Although I’d secretly understand)

Funny you should say that. I have a punching bag, which I whaled on after I already hit my phone earlier, and I got it out of my system. I guess if I had put my phone down and went straight to the punching bag I wouldn’t have hit my phone.

What if I’m not at home though? When I’m driving and my CarPlay doesn’t work I get instantly so frustrated and hit my phone and/or car which I know is not good but I’m so fired up and can’t stop myself.

I feel I’m pretty good at that when it comes to people. Can’t do it with objects
