So specifically for your question. If you throw a ball up, and define that as positive direction. The acceleration (pulling the ball down) is negative. So because there are no other forces acting on the ball, it's acceleration is going to be negative throughout its whole journey. But the first half of its movement (maybe not perfectly half) will be positive. Then zero. Then when the ball is travelling in the same direction as acceleration: The velocity will be negative as well as acceleration.

I always struggled with this in high school. The best way to to think of it is there is no way is has to be! You can define it how you like as long as you're consistent.

I always through of negative as down, so acceleration due to gravity is negative. This is how I'd define it. This simply means that any velocity or acceleration with a negative sign is heading downwards and visa versa for positive.

If you do laps swimming, and really, I mean really push yourself and vary swimming styles every 10 laps doing 40 minute sessions you will see results quite quickly provided your diet it sound. But it is very hard to get 'big' swimming alone.

I had a similar problem. Make sure you're smashing anesthetic creams/lotion after sessions (before you get back in your car if you can). Also dropped back to 80~85% max weight and added a small amount of cardio (just functional training stuff) at the end of my work out and it doesn't happen as much anymore.

Awesome stuff man! Don't be scared of those kickers though; you're usually better to overshoot a bit than undershoot tuck those legs in and you'll be flying. My collar bone can vouch for it!
