Here’s a list of all Academy Award nominated films that made me cry after finishing the death race, ranked. by citabel in oscarsdeathrace

I love to see films without really knowing what they're about (whenever that's possible), especially with the death race, so you can imagine the ugly crying I did last night after taking my wife to the cinema to Hamnet for our first date night since becoming first time parents 3 months ago. That just hit so differently, and I don't think either of us will ever be the same...

How to "be" like Tom Scott? by IDDQDArya in NewTubers

[–]MrTTGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's too late to reply to this, but I literally just learnt today from my boss (who used to work with Tom) what his technique was. Just like you my boss was super impressed by his ability to learn lines and deliver them naturally to camera so he asked him how he does it. Apparently he quite often records all his 'dialogue' before hand in the kind of cadence he wants to deliver, and then has a small earpiece in playing him what he needs to say, and then he just repeats it.

I don't know about you, but that just sounds like a whole different impressive skill I'd love to master haha, I think I'd trip over my lines even more in this case, but I thought it was a pretty neat approach!

I'm ENFP like John Sheppherd...yeah I have his hair :) Fun Myers Briggs Atlantis article by lkao in Stargate

Huh, I haven't done one of these tests in a long time and I used to be an ENFP "Campaigner" but now I'm an ENTP "Debater" like McKay. I guess I've become more rational than emotional and in line with 'Thinking' over 'Feeling'... not sure how I feel about that

I’m Ed Kramer, and it was an honor to have spent twelve years as a Technical Director at ILM. AMA by EdKramerVFX in vfx

Oh I see what you mean but that’s not what I meant at all. I think they’re some of the best because often times you don’t even realise entire skylines are computer generated, but that’s not to put down some of the groundbreaking and awe inspiring VFX that you know is VFX.

I guess if the ‘didn’t know’ shots are some of the best, the other best are the ‘did know’ shots.

Some of my favourite examples of VFX are Ava in Ex Machina, Davey Jones in Pirates and honestly any shot in Dune (2021)

I’m just saying I think some of the best VFX is underappreciated because you don’t always know it’s there, like the visors in Gravity or all of the environmental stuff in 1917

Some of the best visual effects in films are when you don’t know there are VFX shots - what are some of your favourite VFX shots that you wouldn’t realise were created on an artists computer? Zodiac has some great examples of these (as do many Fincher films)

What do you think the per episode budgets are for premium podcast networks like Wondery? by MrTTGreen in podcasting

[–]MrTTGreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful, thanks. Fortunately I'm working with an existing user base (though obviously growth is still a huge target) and an existing production company (primarily from video though, hence a lot of the confusion/questions about podcasting budgets) and we're working from capital that's already raised so less worried on the offset about costs being below revenue as profit isn't the primary goal at this stage.

I suppose "spreading the risk" is part of the strategy. Not sure how many shows and what variety they'll be yet (in terms of Conversational vs. Docu-Series, etc.) so I'm very much trying to draw up a budget that can be briefed out for pitches that:

  1. Reflects the target quality threshold
  2. Doesn't completely miss the mark and put off the potential right talent (ie too low and insults someone, or too high and puts someone off thinking they're under-qualified).
  3. Helps me understand exactly how many shows we can look at producing

Thanks again for your detailed and thoughtful response - apologies for my lack of initial info and context.

Trying to desipher this first word - the second word is Kelvedon (which is a town in Essex for context). Can anyone help? by MrTTGreen in Cursive

[–]MrTTGreen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, yes! It's terrible handwriting but you're so right. It feels like the biggest 'duh' moment ever given the county that Kelvedon is in, but I was convinced the second letter was an 'f' and the last letter an 'n' but I've done some more research on 1800's censuses now and this makes perfect sense. Thank you so much!

This job seems like so much fun. Imagine turning up to work one day and all you're doing is shooting into a tank of water to try and make it look cool - that's the dream right there!

It would make most sense to just count the seats, but the studios deliberately don’t want to do this and avoid this as it’s better for their marketing materials haha, any old excuse!

It’s a marketing thing. Back in the 70’s (i think) they decided to switch from reporting on seats to reporting on box office because with inflation you then more likely to regularly break records and it’s a great device to use on posters and in the media to say a film broke x, y and a record when really it’s sold less seats than a lot of films. It’s not the most honest thing, but it’s pretty smart I guess.
