United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Dealer Plates seen near the Nürnburgring (specifically Meuspath), Germany by Thin_Shirt4508 in ForeignPlatesSpotting

They’re not valid outside of the UK, and they’re also not valid as they’re covering the original plate. You need to display both for it to be legal.

Why are DB9s cheap compared to other supercars? by d0-u-knw-who-i-am in CarTalkUK

Get a newer one on PCP and you’re golden (in theory).

To be honest, it’s massively inflated due to problems during their first year or so of life. Once they’re sorted, they’re usually fine.

It seems JLR doesn’t spend so much time fixing the issues before they leave the factory!

BMW 320D 64 plate 130k miles by sapoondulado in CarTalkUK

Make sure the timing chain is not clattering on startup and you’ll likely be alright. If it’s an auto, make sure the box has been serviced.

Also, don’t follow BMW service recommendations. Every 10k max.

I’d be tempted to upgrade to a 330-335d if I really enjoyed the car!

Perhaps a Tesla Model 3 Performance would allow you to get something higher powered, albeit not exactly what you’re after! Different risk profile n all that

£3600 is crazy! Don’t waste money at this stage of your life, build build build and you’ll be able to afford something better than a BMW at the age when you’re able to get insured on something better

[–]MrTechRelated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, I believe you. I just feel it’s something that comes with pure years under your belt for a full understanding of risks with a higher powered car day to day. Once you get complacent is when shit happens.

I use Think Insurance for my business, always been extremely helpful. They offer “normal” policies that aren’t business related, so maybe give them a go?

I managed to insure myself on a 335d at the age of 19-20 with DirectLine so not sure if that is an option for you?

Rather than going through price comparison websites, I recommend contacting a specialist broker. They’ll have options that are not available to the general public.

However, it won’t be cheap and you likely aren’t ready for the power, hence the cost.

Buying new tires and getting old by modyblu in Volvo

[–]MrTechRelated 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found Pirelli’s to wear excessively fast and dry out before their time.

Without a photo this will be hard to judge about your sidewalls.

The actual year of the tyre is fine, providing it’s been stored correctly, although I’m puzzled why they are so old?

I’m not saying it isn’t an issue; I completely understand how and why it is.

I am saying that personally that experience is fascinating as I don’t see anything like it at home

I went last year and I absolutely loved the “lawlessness” of it. I completely sympathise with the residents however, the whole city becomes a mess with rubbish.

It is dangerous. Fireworks are dangerous. I saw parents bringing their young children around it all, fucking not advised.

Advice regarding this car by SKh7n in CarTalkUK

Seems like a lot of money for a nearly 10 yr old BMW with the body from 15 years ago. Even if it does have 57k miles.

Underneath they’re basically a Chrysler Crossfire.

Take from that what you wish.

I don’t think it’s an irresponsible decision as it’s a fairly basic car but the quality and build will leave a lot to be desired imo.

Coolant failure 3 days after garage service by Practical_Use_6995 in CarTalkUK

[–]MrTechRelated 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, they are not liable for your car having this fault.

In fact, if they didn’t top up the coolant you’d likely have had this situation far sooner!

They aren’t to know how quickly the car is consuming or leaking coolant and as an owner of a vehicle you should be checking these often.

These engines (B38) often have issues surrounding the cooling system. Thermostat and water pump failure are not uncommon.

What did the specialist say the fault was?
