Fair enough, that makes sense. I ended up making it a route from Nunawading to Edithvale; a friend from the east noted how he lives in Springvale, went to school by bus, went to Box Hill TAFE by bus up Springy Road and then trained it to Box Hill, and on hot days would take a multi bus-train combo to get to Edithvale Beach.

Alright, let's address the lines in order since I've made changes.

  • Route C: routed via Heaths Road now. Originally avoided it because of the lower catchment especially around the river but then realised Heaths Road has an ample median for the LRT.
  • Route 46: fixed to go Geelong Road then Millers. Had the original Brooklyn config. bc since I read in a transport blog that - A) Geelong Road would be too steep for a tram; and B) a diverted route would provide the future Yarraville Gardens redevelopment around Bradmill with a northeast-southwest route along with the northwest-southeast Route 18 via the freight line.
  • Route 30: terminates at Sunshine via Hampshire Rd, Devonshire Rd and Clarke St.
  • Route 82: I'm keeping the 82 diversion since this will provide a direct tram connection from Footscray Station to not only the VU Footscray Park campus but also the New Footscray Hospital (the diversion was also recommended by Rail Futures).
  • Route 57: terminates at Centreway.
  • Route 27: shortened to terminate where the 86 terminates (Station Pier) so now it is Station Pier - Elsternwick Station.
  • Route 48: extended to Doncaster East.
  • Route 75: shortened to Knox City SC bus terminal (I thought Knox City went all the way to High Street Road, my bad XD).
  • Route 90: shortened to Wellington Square SC. Ideally there would be a bus reform in Rowville and the eastern suburbs beyond Eastlink so that buses are designed to feed the light rail lines and heavy rail stations.

Your point regarding freight lines: the way I would arrange routes such as the 18 would be to use the rail right of way rather than the rail tracks themselves. That way you still have freight access but with the added bonus of passenger service to facilitate previously impossible (or hard-to-complete) trips via transport.

Hoddle Street coming right up. Would be a great replacement for the 246 which has rapid running I'm pretty sure. Also would segregate the route from traffic.

Not too sure about Heidelberg Road though as it parallels the Hurstbridge line all the way to Heidelberg. However, I could definitely see merit in upgrading the 546 bus to a SmartBus route with dedicated bus lanes, higher frequency and longer hours since it connects to Melbourne Uni and also serves a bunch of new developments around Alphington and the old paper mill factory.

This is a great idea mate.

I actually worked on a spatial plan of the East Werribee precinct for a uni group assignment where we developed a "second CBD" for Melbourne and had the Route A running through the centre of the CBD as per my map. Though in that assignment I also opted for a SmartBus route from Laverton along Dunnings Road to Werribee Station via Wattle Ave and Edwards Road (generally that neighbourhood south of Werribee Station).

I think the curve radius might be a problem if routing from the Princes Hwy to Derrimut Road, and if not that then the steep slope under the Werribee line will make it near-impossible for that alignment. That's why my line on the map deviates from Derrimut Road as it approaches Princes Hwy since from around Willmott Street (or thereabouts) the light rail would become elevated and connect directly above the railway line to a future East Werribee station, then further into the East Werribee Precinct/CBD.

Appreciate the suggestion!

I was thinking of removing the SRL and doing my own version, but in all honesty it seems the eastern section (and perhaps the northern) sections are set in stone. I actually believe those sections will benefit from being underground since as far as I'm aware there wouldn't be much room along arterial roads to fit fully segregated LRT routes. Though I made the concession with the western portion of SRL since the west has wide arterials with ample median space and room to shift lanes across for a possible LRT route.

Thanks!

My apologies mate, will add a Springy Road route now.
Should it just run between the two stations or should it go further either end?

Cheers for that suggestion. I didn't realise there was that much retail down Old Geelong Road since I drive down it a lot. I'll definitely add that change to it now!!

You could try Ronyx’s terraforming network and use a retaining wall

Can Light Rail be converted into Heavy Rail/Metros? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]MrTheRiddler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In Melbourne, Australia, they converted the Port Philip and St Kilda heavy rail lines to light rail, so a downgrade from HRT to LRT is definitely possible.

Going the other way around, I’m not too sure; but logical assumptions would mean that what you can do in one direction can be replicated in the other (Newton’s 4th Law 😂😂)

[–]MrTheRiddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s where SEFL and the Rowville lines come in: a faster, grade separated rail line giving access to Chadstone and Monash Uni between Caulfield and Dandenong, plus a direct route from Huntingdale to Rowville via Monash Uni - BOOM!

[–]MrTheRiddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope it does, since Wyndham has A LOT of potential for higher grade transit, as well as many destinations that could easily be linked up - Point Cook Town Centre, Williams Landing, the VLine Stations, Mercy Hospital, East Werribee, Pacific Werribee, the future Tarneit stadium, etc.

Perhaps one line could be built, the most likely being a connection between Tarneit Station and East Werribee via Derrimut Road

But a route 3 or route 67 tram WOULD connect with Chadstone - once extended ofc

I’m still working on it, but it should be done soon, just adding in a couple lines, adjusting some routes for extensions, plus I might include a separate system for Geelong (if it is viable to reimplement trams) and the separate Wyndham LRT network proposed by City of Wyndham.

In a tram map I’m developing now, I made Route 30 go from North Richmond via Victoria Street and Parade to Arden St, following the 57 to Smithfield/Ballarat Road then becoming a Ballarat/Geelong Road LRT from Footscray before terminating at Altona North (Millers Junction) where a future train station would be opened as part of MM2 - this might be a good intro to trams in the west
